Weekend Trip to Zephyr Mountain Avocado Grove

My family and I went tent camping on Shane’s land and it was great. The camp sites were far apart enough that it felt secluded, which we loved especially because we didn’t have to share a portal toilet. My daughter enjoyed seeing the animals in their animal sanctuary. Would recommend for small families.

What a lovely spot! There are so many trails and multiple gorgeous views. The individual spaces were very large and varied from shaded to sunny, from remove, to nearer to others. Having the goats run around freely was just so much fun to watch. Every employee we encountered was helpful and really friendly. The bathrooms were always clean and well stocked. I never used the showers, but they looked clean and private enough for being outside. I can't wait to go back. If there was on less than perfect thing to mention, it was that the shop had no ice. It was advertised that they sell ice. Because it was Sunday afternoon, maybe they sold out as people so many people were leaving/checking out. Other than that, absolutely glorious!!

I can't rave enough about this place. It was breathtakingly beautiful. We stayed at the Oak community camp and it was amazing, there were goats and a lama that wander around and we also saw a quail with her chicks. The staff went above and beyond for us and bathrooms are spotless, it was so nice to have a hot shower available. We will definitely be back.

Can’t wait to visit again! The tire swing, picnic table, fire pit (with wash out water), and goats and pups?! The list of fun amenities was so lovely! My 6 year old animal lover adored our stay. Our site was well shaded and clean! The neighboring bird sanctuary does make for some goofy sounds but we had fun imitating them!

We had a fantastic time here! The campsites offer a wonderful sense of privacy, surrounded by beautiful scenery. The newly renovated restrooms are truly exceptional – a very pleasant surprise! The entire campground has a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a getaway. We did notice there was no hot water in the shower, which was okay for us given the hot weather, but we were curious if this was a temporary issue. Aside from that small detail, everything else was perfect. A truly great place to stay!

Very underrated lakeshore campsite! Has everything you need for several days of camping with a private dock to fish from and hold your jetski or kayak overnight. Highly recommend. Very level ground and although the lake water isn’t the cleanest it was a great experience.

The place was amazing. I do wish the tent sites were further into the park so the noise from the road wasn’t there (more nature) but the place and the people who work there were all amazing. The cabins looked extremely nice. Will try that next time. Nice cold water to swim in. Things to rent. The Hawaiian ice woman April was a real treat. Overall lots to do with your kids. Will go again.

This is a great place to get away without driving miles into the desert. You get trees and space (and wild life). They are always improving upon what they have on the property and Christopher was very helpful when we arrived. If you want time to yourself, this is the place to camp.

I took my nearly-4-year-old boy on his first ever real camping trip here. We had a great time. Two days is just about perfect. This is a good "beginner" camp site. I recommend finding a spot in the shade - we stayed in the Oak Grove. Nice hiking for a toddler, a nice camp store, and nice staff. Lots of goats and an alpaca wandering around. A+. My main "suggestions" would be to increase the water pressure in the bathrooms, increase the refill rate in the toilets, and ensure the hot shower is hot. But these are minor - again, overall this was a great place to camp and we definitely enjoyed ourselves! The owner has done a lot to put little "easter eggs" around the property to make it exciting and fun to walk around with a toddler. Also it's a quick 15 minute ride into town in case you need more ice or anything! I would definitely return.

Took my boyfriend and my two boys out to T-Rex Creek and it was on its own path, fit our family of four just nicely and was a beautiful spot with the added table, chairs, and firepit! We rented the bell tent and had the children take the cots that were included. The camp store was great, thanks Lyla (hope I didnt spell it wrong)! The observation deck nearby gave a real beautiful site! The bathroom was very nice! Our spot was shady, a big rock to climb on, and was a lot of fun hiking around. We saw the properties very friendly goats, friendly barn cats, one of two Great Pyrenees and Alpaca, saw them during the animal encounter and my boys were so happy to have that one on one hour with them. Rick and Susanna were so kind showing us around! My boyfriend even saw a pack of coyotes walking down our path during the night. The only thing that was mildly irritating, NOT due to the property or the owner, but the campsite that is located next to the camp store about 200 ft from us. Unfortunately they were loud until 3am playing music and their older kids were running close to our campsite screaming and yelling so we didn't get much sleep. However, we would still love to go back. Either back to T-Rex Creek or to try another site maybe further away. It was a real fun time.

We had an amazing experience at Redtail Rock! The views overlooking the valley were absolutely beautiful — both sunset and sunrise were breathtaking — and the stars at night were stunning. We loved the surprise encounters with the goats, alpacas, and the friendly dogs roaming the property, which made the trip extra memorable. The host was kind and welcoming. There were some animal droppings around the site, but nothing unexpected given the open nature of the property. There were rocks to climb and plenty of space for the kids to explore and play. Just a heads-up for larger groups: the site came with a small table and a few chairs, which wouldn’t be enough on its own for a big group (we were 15), but we brought extra tables and chairs and it worked out perfectly. We’d definitely come back — such a special place!

Splitrock Farm Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Bailes Farm

One of the last remaining undeveloped parts of Southern California, De Luz Heights is located adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest, and the Santa Margarita River (just a few miles from the campsite). On my 60 acres, there are no major roads going through or next to the property. My land is 13 miles from the Pacific ocean and enjoys a relatively mild yearly climate. Giant boulders provide topographical relief and offer platforms from which to enjoy the view of the nearby Santa Margarita Mountains. The valley views are filled with olive and avocado groves, vineyards, and horse ranches. The Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base is nearby, so you might hear some artillery in the distance on some occasions. The campsite embraces all the comforts of "glamping": a hot shower, composting toilet, beds with sheets provided, gas grill with a stovetop, pots and pans, kitchenware, a sink, picnic table, shaded deck, sofa, lounge chairs, and propane fire pit. The basics are provided: toilet paper, paper towels, purified drinking water, towels, sheets, cooking oil, etc. Campers need to bring their own blankets. I've created a network of hiking trails for especially fit hikers looking for a more rigorous hike than the nearby Santa Margarita River Trail. My trails lead through creek beds, over boulders, through rocky crags, with views of the Pacific ocean on a clear day. Hikers on my trails need to wear proper hiking boots with good traction. Sections of my trails will require bouldering with hands and feet. Expect to have fatigued quadriceps, some scrapes, and a sweaty hat brim. The campsite is accessible with a two-wheel drive vehicle; I drive a Kia Forte out there regularly. However, some tips when driving a two-wheel drive car: when going uphill on a dirt road, try to keep some momentum of about 12-15 MPH. If you stop and try to start again, your tires will spin out. If that happens, just reverse down the hill, and try it again with more momentum.

Within a 10 acre range of sloping hillside, majestic rock formations and lush exotic landscape, you can find your own ideal camp spot or choose one of our leveled spots, already cleared of dry brush and ready for above ground standard tent camping. Dogs allowed on leash only and be familiar with Southern California's indigenous wildlife proper protocol, when accompanied by your canine. The camping area resides on the North side of the Via Cordoniz access road, starting at Deadwood Dome site and the Detour N De Luz sign at top of staircase, ranging North West 3/4 of the mountain up, and 10 acres left. Please be mindful of the property markers, and respect our neighboring property lines. You are responsible for your own fitness in hiking the inclining trails and staircases. Hiking or walking sticks are highly recommended. A shared cooking area, has been cleared, providing use of the propane gas grill (campers must supply own 1 lb green canister), standard size cooler, small fire extinguisher, and carved or cut seating. Nearby, a shared pit toilet with a small 5 gallon black solar shower bag, shower toga, toilet paper, glass wash basin and pouring bottle-for minor freshening, vanity mirror and 5 gallon water jug, refilled daily- or more frequently, if needed, all located in a pallet wood stall. Two additional 3 persons sleeping tents are both folded and stored at the cooking area, for guest use. Please leave an additional $5 per night, per sleeping tent used and fold back neatly, before check out. If you would like the tent set up and taken down for you, we charge $10 per tent set up breakdown fee , plus $5 per night tent rental. Rolling green hills and wildflower valleys await discovery in the Chino Hills State Park. Come in the spring to admire the changing colors, from swaths of orange California poppies through purple lupines and yellow mustard flowers. Whether you prefer to hike, mountain bike, bird-watch, or horseback ride, there are plenty of options for exploring, with more than 90 miles of trails and 14,000 acres of grassy hills and black walnut woodlands. Campers can check into the small Rolling M Ranch Campground, where you can pitch a tent or park up your RV close to the historic cattle ranch.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve one of 20 primitive campsites at Rolling M Ranch Campground online.
Online reservations open six months in advance and book up fast, especially for weekends and holidays in peak season (March to September), so plan ahead and book as soon as possible.

When to go

Wildflowers carpet the valleys of Chino Hills State Park each spring (March through May), and this is the busiest time to visit. Time your visit for late March or early April to see the famous California poppies. Hiking and camping are possible year-round, depending on the weather. Note that the park closes for at least two days following heavy rainfall (more than a quarter-inch) to protect its clay trails, as well as in times of high fire risk.

Chino Hills State Park is 37 miles east of Los Angeles, or about a 40-minute drive away.
There are day-use parking fees for all California state parks, and campsite booking fees also apply.
Campsites at Rolling M Ranch Campground have access to flush toilets and potable water. There are no hookups or other facilities, and campfires and charcoal BBQs are prohibited.
Chino Hills facilities are basic with restrooms and picnic benches—bring everything else you need with you. Cell phone service is unreliable throughout the park.
