To access our sites, find Ferren Road, about 1/4 mile east of Briceland. Head up that gravel road about 75 yards. It is ideal to text or call ahead so I can come out to meet you as you arrive. Then, I can direct you to your spot. Thanks!

To provide power for the new development in the valley, a concrete dam was constructed across the south fork of the Eel River from 1931-1937. The dam not only provided power but also created Benbow Lake. The Benbow family, interested in preserving the natural scene around the hotel and along the river, made efforts to place the land under State protection. In 1956 funds were approved for the Benbow Project and it was purchased in 1958, creating Benbow Lake State Recreation Area.

Have it all and relax at our forest glen located in Southern Humboldt 5 miles up private dirt road (2 wheel drive OK- but sports car height is not good ( IE not a BMW or Tesla)--higher clearance is best.) Our land is part of an old collectively owned by "back to the landers" group from the 70's. The parcel is over 500 acres, but our portion is about 40 acres. There is a large deepwater pond with a rowboat (and frogs) orchard, stream, and many hiking trails my husband created and dirt roads winding through the property.

Enjoy the birds in the morning and frogs on the pond at night from your well equipped tent with queen mattress and comfy comforters, sitting space, and wood counter for food prep. ( propane ok) No fires allowed at site but enjoy the large communal fire pit and terrace steps away.
Our deep water pond (15 ft) is FULL and ready for warm summer swims.
Wifi and electric for charging and an electric water kettle for coffee making is available at the communal space. EV charging is possible but slow off of our solar panels.
Hiking trails on our 500 acre property and Lost Coast Trail at Shelter Cove Black Sands beach is 1 hour away. Ave of the Giants is 45 minutes away. We encourage 2 night stays as it is a bit of a trek to get here. Your hosts have everything you might need ( cooking wise) and can arrange for cooking equipment and utensils. Need Paella pans? Paella is our passion and we can offer a Paella Cookout customized to your dietary needs for an additional fee.
We are 5 miles up a private dirt road ( 2 wheel drive is ok but caution to lower clearance vehicles)
You will be deep in the relaxing forest. The 16 foot bell tent is quite large and can accommodate 2 more travelers. However they would need to provide sleeping bags and mats. Children under 10 not recommended
The Chimes tent is slightly smaller 13 foot bell tent set on a platform 6 feet off the ground-- literally in the trees!

This property has been in the family since 1922. During a time of no roads just the railroad that passed through, and a river ferry.
At the entrance of the property was the town of Skelly, with a post office, train stop, animal corrals and railroad logging spurs. The lands primary use was ranching and timber back then. The flat that the camp ground is located on is the site of the old Larrabee school house (Georgeson School) which was built after the 1955 flood took out the original school house, located across from the train trussell next to Larabee Creek.
The railroad was closed indefinitely in 1996, which changed the entire landscape for this small community. This area is accessible by a low water bridge in the summer months and offers a spot to slip back in time.
Today the land is a great example of sustainably harvest redwoods, a project that was established by great grandpa and is still in practice today. The timber surrounds the pastures and farm land that now produces hay.
We acquired this land 5 years ago and have spent countless hours restoring the fields, managing the forest and creating a working sustainable environment.
It is a very special place and offers peace and quite to those who enjoy the out doors and camping.

Loved everything about the campsite - clean bathrooms, great location with access to stunning beaches (black sand and cove), weather even in summer was amazing, very responsive and helpful staff at the checkin/general store.
My only qualms were - the sites were too close to eachother (wish it was more dispersed for more privacy) and we did not find a sink to wash our vessels (not sure if we missed it but asked a few fellow campers and none of us knew).

I had a great time camping on Heidi's land! It was very remote and beautiful, with lots of privacy and a feeling like you're alone in your own private canyon. The river downhill is absolutely gorgeous and the water was great for swimming, just be ready to drive most of the way and walk the last chunk since the road is a bit too rough for driving (but there is room to park a few cars and hike down the rest of the way). Heidi and Matt were gracious enough to give us a sampling of local cannabis and we bought 2 of their smoked chickens which were absolutely amazing! Huge birds and the flavor was perfect, they delivered them down to the site at dinnertime. They also provided plenty of firewood so we had everything we needed for the weekend. Don't forget your bug spray and close up your trash, there are bugs and critters out there. Heidi and Matt were very responsive when we had some questions or needed help, they're great!
The only negative I would point out is the directions could be a bit more specific to make sure people don't get lost on the long dirt road out there (about 45 mins total from the paved road), and it was a bit bumpier/steeper than we expected at times so definitely take your AWD car out there if possible! I'd also recommend downloading maps offline since the cell service is spotty getting out there.
Overall we loved our trip out there and would visit again!

Great (and easy!) place to camp with nice tents furnished with cots, incredible views and nice amenities! The camp host (Alan) was very kind and helpful. We had our own stove but the small kitchen on the premises was a bonus. Our dogs got along well with the camp dog. It was hot during the day but there is shade on the property including hammocks in a treed area.

Beautiful, peaceful setting, with lots of privacy between the sites. The human waste composting toilets really didn't smell at all! However, it ran out of toilet paper and there were no backup rolls anywhere. Also, be warned that there are no hookups and only eco-safe products (e.g., soap, shampoo, etc.) are allowed in the community shower. So plan ahead!

We really enjoyed our first Hipcamp experience! The space was beautiful, with just the right amount of privacy. Gina greeted us upon our arrival and bid us a farewell when departing, but otherwise gave us our privacy. Although there are not water “hook-ups” there was water available at a spigot, which was perfect for our outdoor dishwashing! Our dogs enjoyed the great walk along the road, and we enjoyed the beautiful roadside wildflowers! Would definitely return and recommend to friends.

The property is super wooded so it feels like the middle of no where with a town right next to it with all the basic necessities. Super cute with the outdoor kitchen and showers. This is a really good bonus swimming spot called Hole in the Wall which is super fun to go to and is about 20 minutes away from the site. Would stay again!
