There is a gentle spirit throughout these beautiful 80 acres of evergreen forests and pastures. My aunt and uncle bought it in 1947 from the first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who came to the U.S. in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. Paolo left his wife, Felicita, and their three children behind; they were to follow within the year. In the country outside of Ferndale, California, he purchased the property, one mile from the ocean, and built a Tyrolean-style house, a chicken house (with a grappa still under the main floor), an outhouse, a corral, and a barn. He purchased 7 cows. And then, it was August 1914, and the War to End All Wars broke out in Europe. Felicita and the children, living in a village on the Austrian border, were interned in a prison camp in Austria with the rest of the village's residents. The Gabriellis' young daughter died there. Six years passed before Felicita, Virgil and Louis were able to join Paolo in America. In 1938, Virgil--Fr. Gino--became the first Ferndale boy to serve Mass in his home town church. Felicita died in 1940, and Paolo closed the dairy and moved into Ferndale to live with Louis and his family. In 2014, we invited to lunch all the people who had been children in the 1920s and '30s, and who had come to this ranch after Sunday Mass to gather with other Italian families for polenta, wine, and music. They came with photographs and maps and Mass cards and diaries, and shared their memories of a childhood in this place that still loved them.

Orchard Park
Orchard Campsite
We enjoyed our stay with Wendy and John. The site is a perfect base for exploring the Giant Redwoods. Previous reviews praising the hosts are spot on. A warm welcome greeted us and we were directed to park our 99 Eurovan Camper in the orchard close to the property bathroom/shower.laundry area. There is a meadow beyong the orchard that offers additional camping locations and has another bathroom/shower building. Firewood galore is supplied at each camping site. Such a peaceful location and a short 20 minute walk away from the beach. The charming town of Ferndale was nearby with stores to keep our supplies refreshed. We did take advantage of John's bread and Wendy's soup for a very tasty dinner one night during our trip.

AMAZING! Book here for fun!
Delightful/full of fun. Labor Day wkend/heat wave. We went from 112 degrees to 62-72 deg., heaven! Spotless clean, GREEN, fresh, organized, simple, private, welcoming, and safe. There is a very large field with a lovely tall forest surrounding the campsites. Limited campsites, you are not camping on top of each other. Field is perfect for kids and off-leash dogs to run and play. There are trees to climb, a creek to play in, forest to explore and find banana slugs, birds singing, space. NO noise, no traffic noise, no sirens, no people being rude, no partiers. Very few pesky flies or mosquitos there were moths flying around dusk-time but birds made dinner of them. We were provided firewood for our fire pit and had a great campfire! Having a campfire is a big part of the camping experience. We had foster children with us that had never been camping, and never been in the forest. We were provided a table and chairs. Other campers had kids, they played hide and seek, tag, ball, soccer – no electronics! Camping is close to the beach. We visited Sequoia Zoo in Eureka went on the Redwood Sky Walk through the redwood trees! The hosts were very nice, non-intrusive, but welcoming. We were allowed to stroll through their garden, take photos, and Wendy came out to give a few stories about items in her garden. The bathrooms were clean and the shower water ran hot! There was an outdoor sink set up for washing dishes. We loved our stay and will be back!

The Grove Woodside
Hugely recommend staying here. As you drive through a quaint town and down this lovely road passing a beautiful house that has a zebra you will see two roads one that leads to a beautiful beach and the other to an adorable house. Inside that adorable house is two of the sweetest people I have ever met and lovely dog. You will first be greeted by Louie who will lead you to the front door. Wendy is the most adorable lady you want to adopt as your grandmother. HIGHLY recommend getting the cobbler and baguettes (or any other accommodations). Their campsite is very beautiful, private, clean, and so homey. 20/10 will be visiting again!!!

Fantastic stay! Large meadow surrounded by tall trees. We got there and were warmly greeted by the hosts and their dog, Louie. Picked up some eggs and were directed to our site which was already stocked with firewood and a firestarter for the fire pit. Also a table and chairs. 1.5 bathrooms - super clean and much nicer than I was expecting. Didn’t plan to shower there but ended up doing so because it was clean and there was hot water. The individual sites are spread out nicely so there is privacy. It can get foggy/lots of moisture at night so be sure you have your rainfly up if tent camping. Our dog had the best time and so did we. We also felt safe leaving our tent set up and driving into town one of the days which was adorable. You can’t miss out on exploring Main St. You’re also less than a 5 min drive to the ocean and less than 10 min to the Lost Coast Headlands- great hiking with amazing coastal views. At the campsite you can hear the ocean at night and some moo’ing cows from nearby farms. 11/10- can’t wait to come back.
