Welcome to Shasta View Wanderer's Retreat, your ideal basecamp for outdoor adventures. Located approximately 60 miles from Crater Lake National Park, 30 miles from Lava Beds National Monument, and 12 miles from Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, our retreat offers unparalleled access to a variety of natural wonders. Within just 30 minutes, you'll find numerous opportunities for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and biking, with private access to miles of hiking trails on public land right from the campsite. Keep your eyes peeled for the impressive eagle activity in the area, as bald and golden eagles are frequently spotted soaring above or perched nearby. At night, you may have the opportunity to join us for star viewing parties under our dark, expansive sky—an experience you won't forget. While our site offers access to seclusion, it's not entirely secluded on its own. Nestled at the bottom of a pasture in a farming area, it's within sight of the owner and a neighbor. However, rural living offers a sense of privacy, allowing you to relax and be yourself amidst nature. Keep in mind that you may encounter bugs, coyotes, deer, and some nearby farming activity during your stay. Our communal camping area features level ground, fire pit, potable water spigot, camp toilet, and a picnic table. Well-behaved dogs are welcome but must be leashed or kenneled on the property—feel free to let them off-leash on the adjacent public lands. You may get lucky and get a visit from one of our barn cats-Pumpkin and Spice, or get a glimpse of one of the dinosaur chickens (Guinea Fowl) that serve as pest and mosquito control. Owners are available to provide information and maps for hiking and outdoor recreation activities. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Shasta from your campsite, with seasonally flooded fields adding to the picturesque scenery. You're also welcome to explore the hills nearby, offering even more breathtaking vistas to discover.

We originally purchased the 20 acres of untouched land and built our cabin, the "Snug Shack," as a getaway from the city. Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place. We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." You can learn more about our project in progress at our website and instagram account: @oak_ring_ridge

Hogs & Hoes Farm

42mi from Lava Beds National Monument · 1 site
“The Bunky” The Bunky is an off-grid cabin located 9 miles from downtown McCloud. It is a rustic cabin situated on a 10-acre homestead. We have free-ranging chickens, sheep, Kune Kune pigs, and two livestock guardian dogs that roam freely during the day. Our livestock guardian dogs are extremely friendly but bark at night to protect the farm animals from predators. We do have black bears and coyotes in the wilderness surrounding our homestead. We cannot allow pets, as we need to ensure the safety of our animals. We are located in a secluded rural neighborhood that is 2 miles down a dirt road off Highway 89. If you are looking for a secluded, peaceful homestead experience and are comfortable in the wilderness, this is the perfect place for you. We are only 2–3 miles away from McCloud Falls, which offers beautiful hiking trails. Our property is completely off-grid, so the cabin is solar powered. There is a wood burner for heat, and the water for showering is rainwater collected in a 2,000-gallon water tank. The water is treated with a reverse osmosis system. We supply well water for drinking in a 5-gallon water dispenser. The cabin has an attached bathroom with a flushing toilet, sink, and shower. We do not allow baths due to water conservation and a small septic system—showers only. Access to the bathroom is a short walk around the side of the cabin. We have a 2-burner cooktop for cooking and an under-counter refrigerator for keeping your food fresh and cold. There is running water available for washing dishes.

Lava Beds National Monument camping guide

Overview

About

There's no other park like this one. With more than 700 caves and a handful of craters, this is easily a natural wonder! There are amazing lava tube caves like the glowing gold walls of the Golden Dome to see. There's also the dangling icicles of the Skull Cave. But that's just the beginning.

It's like the National Park Service was kind enough to offer up a whole crash course in Geology 101. There are textbook examples of all kinds of earth treasures here. You'll come across creations like cinder cones, pit craters, volcanic fields. and more.

When you're done admiring the geology, take in some culture at Petroglyph Point. It's one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States. The Modoc National Forest gets its name from the Modoc people that took refuge in the Captain Jack Stronghold cave here. Whatever you end up doing, you'll be sure to lav-a this national monument!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Lava Beds National Monument is during spring and fall when the weather is mild, making exploration comfortable. Summer brings high temperatures, which can limit daytime activities, while winter may present snowy conditions, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to the park's usual arid climate.

Know before you go

  • Check the latest park alerts and safety information before your visit.
  • Visit the visitor center for important caving safety guidelines and permits.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear for exploring the rugged terrain.
  • Be mindful of park laws and policies to protect the natural and historical features.
  • Cell service may be limited, so plan ahead and download maps and information.
