In the early 1980's the family began planting grapes on the property and now the vineyard is the predominate feature for the farm. Most of the vineyard production is sold to wineries located across the state, however the family does retain a small amount of grapes each year for their private wine label "Hauer of the Dauen". You are welcome to stop by the farm for wine tasting on Saturday and Sunday's 12:00-5:00pm. The park and campground area is a recent addition to the farm and had been a vision for quite some time.

Learn more about our land: In the heart of Willamette Valley AVA and on a breezy 20-acre lot of land we provide a space for you to set yourself up and enjoy life's natural bounty. We offer a small shared space with a wood fire stove and some essential items, many games (such as horseshoes), and lots of picnic areas and tables sprinkled throughout the property. The location is central and half an hour to just minutes away from water bodies Hagg Lake, Nestucca River, Yamhill River, little Niagara Falls, Mill Creek, Baker Creek, Rainbow Lake and more… Such as the Carlton public pool. If your looking to jaunt from camp a little further, we are located a little over an hour and a beautiful drive to the Pacific Coast and about an hour from Portland. Although in the middle of the country woods, we are surprisingly only two and a half miles from the adorable and quaint town of Carlton. So beside the views, you’ll be alongside some fantastic eateries and outstanding winemakers.  Being raised in the community, and over ten years of experience in the local food and wine industry, I can give recommendations aplenty.   ꕥ  The property has been in our family since the late 60’s and has recently been transferred in ownership to the next generation! It’s been a large adjustment with many precious memories in tow. In hopes to carry on the legacy we opened up camp mid-summer 2021, and it’s a work in progress (as work normally is!), but has been a beautiful experience being in a position to share. There are two family homes on the property with people who truly admire this land! With the work of these past couple seasons, and thanks to our fellow campers, we have been able to lay more gravel, get a more fluid bathroom situation established, and lay out a few more sites! So thank you for your continued support in this venture and in any form, I’m excited to be apart of your adventure and hope to have you in our neck of the woods soon! ❊ ❁ ❊  All the best on your ventures, Whitney!

The best campsites in Willamette Mission State Park, OR guide

Overview

About

Seeking a getaway in the Pacific Northwest's beautiful Willamette Valley? Hiking, boating and birdwatching opportunities await you in this state park. This historic spot borders the Willamette River and sits just a half-hour north of Salem. The name refers to the West Coast's first Methodist mission, which once stood here.

In addition to the river, this park features two marvelous lakes. Mission Lake cuts through the middle, while the smaller Goose Lake sits in the southeast. Both lakes make good fishing spots for bass and bluegill. You can take a boat onto Mission Lake. The more remote Goose Lake demands a bit of a hike.

Check the weather before hitting the trails in this area during winter and spring. The Pacific Northwest's notorious rain can quickly cause severe flooding. Also, note there aren't individual camping spots in the park, only shared areas for groups. Get ready to make some friends if you plan to spend the night here!

Notable campgrounds

  • Beaver Island Group Camp: Ideal for large gatherings, this campsite accommodates up to 100 tent campers amid a rustic setting with a communal fire ring and picnic tables.
  • Horse Camp: Equestrian-friendly with four spacious sites, each featuring horse stalls, a fire ring, and picnic tables for a unique camping experience.
  • Hiker/Biker Camp: A no-reservation-needed haven for hikers and cyclists seeking a simple overnight stay in the heart of nature.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak season from May 15 to September 30, to secure your preferred campsite.
  • Consider mid-week stays for better availability and a quieter camping experience.
  • Keep an eye on the park's reservation system for cancellations to snag a last-minute spot.
  • Explore nearby camping options if the park's campgrounds are fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Willamette Mission State Park is during the dry months from late spring to early fall, offering ideal conditions for outdoor activities. Winter and spring may bring heavy rainstorms, leading to trail flooding and closures, so it's wise to check weather conditions before planning your trip.

Know before you go

  • Life jackets are a must for water activities; ensure they fit properly to keep you safe.
  • Stay informed of potential trail closures due to flooding by checking park notices or calling ahead.
  • Day-use parking permits are required; purchase a 1-day permit on-site or opt for an annual pass.
  • Remember, the park does not have shower facilities, so plan accordingly for your visit.
  • For fishing enthusiasts, be aware that access to Goose Lake may require trailblazing and can be flood-prone in winter and spring.
