Spend a day by the bay at Goose Island State Park. The bad news? You can’t swim here. Well you could try, but we wouldn’t recommend it. The good news? There’s plenty of other ways to spend your day! Fish for trout, flounder, and red drum from boat, the shore, or the park’s 1,620-foot long pier (bonus: you don’t need a fishing license when you fish from the shore or pier). Bring your binoculars to zoom in on one of the 300 varieties of birds that pass through the park when you hike on trails that wind under old-growth oak trees. Speaking of – don’t forget to visit the Big Tree, a 1,000+ old oak on the island, whose gnarly branches recall another famous tree – the Whomping Willow of Harry Potter fame. But don’t worry, the Big Tree loves having visitors; you’ll find the tree waiting to greet you on the north end of the park.
