Lake Norman State Park
The largest manmade body of freshwater in North Carolina.
The nearby town of Troutman will give you a clue as to what's popular here. Lake Norman has 520 miles of shoreline and plenty of fishing spots. Trek on 30 miles of hiking trails, or bring a mountain bike to tame the network of eight loop trails.
Launch your own boat or rent one for a day on the 1,934-acre lake. Fish for crappie, bluegill, perch, catfish, and bass (no trout, ironically). Bring your haul back to your campsite for a yummy dinner.
Hike or bike on moderate trails throughout the park. The Lake Shore Trail is very scenic, with thick forests and shoreline views. Pick your fitness level with a 3- or 6-mile loop trail.
Swim during the summer at a 125-yard beach near the fishing pier. A concession stand offers snacks. Head to Troutman, a historic town, for supplies and food for your getaway. Daveste Vineya
