The Linney Family, descendants of the first Linneys to arrive in the New World, have a unique legacy rooted in North Carolina, where many relatives still reside near the original settlement of William Coplin Linney, established over 225 years ago. One of the family’s most notable landmarks is Linney's Mill, located in the northeastern corner of Alexander County on Rocky Creek. Built in 1790 by Richard Cook, this historic mill has stood the test of time for 219 years. After Richard Cook's passing, his widow Lucy married Randolph Mayberry, and the mill became known as the Mayberry Mill for many years. Linney’s Mill is a cherished family business that has been producing cornmeal using traditional water-wheel powered grinding stones for approximately 65 years. In 1937, William’s father, W.L. Linney, constructed a dam and installed the waterwheel on Rocky Creek, just north of Statesville. William joined the family enterprise in 1954, and his son Billy began contributing at the young age of 13.
