Guess who’s turning 100 this year (2015)? Jay Cooke State Park! Though 100 is young, this park is way beyond its years, with it’s ancient-looking jagged rock, carved valleys and rugged forests. Depending on which season you venture out into this wildland, you will see the St. Louis River either thunder through or trickle on by. In the Spring, you’ll be hit by the most wonderful aroma of blooming wildflowers; in Autumn, you will literally be awestruck by how vivid the colors are. In short, whenever you get here, it will be rad.

Take a walk of courage across the Swinging Bridge, which hangs high above the St. Louis River. Just don’t look down! If you’re not feeling up to it, take an easy stroll around the water-eroded gorge at the Thomson Dam, walk through the Pioneer Cemetery or hike the Grand Portage Trail. Happy Birthday, Jay Cooke State Park! Here’s to another 100 years of being stunned by this Minnesota beaut.
