Escape to Superior Beach Camp and immerse yourself in the beauty and privacy of a cleared camping area situated above 500' feet of sand and pebble beach on the world’s greatest lake. Agate campsite is very generously sized and is all yours. Surrounded by a mix of poplar and birch with a few white pine sprinkled in, the main camp area is set back from the lake atop a 70' bluff with peekaboo views of Lake Superior. A short walk down a private path from your campsite gives you access to a beautiful Lake Superior beach to swim, skip rocks, search for agates, or just enjoy the panoramic views of the lake and the town of Duluth on the opposite shore. Agate campsite previously featured a "look out point" that has been altered by the natural erosion of the red clay banks that comprise much of Lake Superior's south shore. While you can still access this area, doing so will require more effort and care, and we no longer allow camping on the point. Superior Beach Camp located is 2.5 hours north of the Twin Cities and perfectly positions you to discover all the wonders of the Twin Ports. Explore this amazing area or stay at camp, set up your chair in the sand and take in the many moods of Mother Superior. Watch the ships come and go to the sparkly backdrop of Duluth’s city lights. The crackle of a driftwood fire on the beach provides the perfect soundtrack as you watch for shooting stars and the aurora. Stock up on supplies and explore the charming industrial town of Superior, WI – 15 minutes from your campsite. Spend a day mountain biking the Duluth Traverse and touring the the wonderful local dining and tap room scenes of Duluth and Superior. Canal Park, downtown Duluth, is a 25 minute drive. If you’d like to venture further, you could meander up the North Shore. Or keep it local and check out Bayfield and the Apostle Islands – only 75 minutes East. Stop through the charming lakeside village of Cornucopia on your way. Or perhaps you’d like to experience world class trout fishing on the Brule River a half hour from Superior Beach Camp. Maybe Parks are your thing: Amnicon Falls, one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful State Parks, is reachable in 10 minutes by car. Drive a half hour further to Pattison State Park and take in Wisconsin’s tallest waterfall. On the Minnesota side, the magic of Jay Cooke State Park is 30 minutes west (and puts you on the doorstep of legit white water rafting). Whether you're looking for solace and relaxation in a blissful [great] lakeside setting or simply seeking a convenient place to rest your head while exploring the many adventures a stone’s throw from your campsite, there is something for everyone who camps here. Superior Beach Camp is a clean, quiet, peaceful, primitive setting. Waterproof boots or shoes / sandals that you don't mind getting muddy and wet are recommended - especially when rain is in the forecast. The beach is open to roam and setup wherever you please within our property lines. Please do not venture past property markers and be respectful of our neighbors.

While there is a ton of room for happy pets to roam, please be safe and mindful of leash etiquette if your pet is still working on their listening and behavior as there is abundant wildlife and at times other campers in the area.

Overall we had a good time. In all honesty there are only two points to really improve. 1) I know you didn't make the porta-potty, but it's the worst one we've ever used. The layout internally is terrible. 2) you list many trees for hammocks. We saw a lot of trees, but many appeared to be standing deadwood while the others would have needed 20-30 foot straps to utilize them. Still further, per your rules, one is not to cut live wood, so that negates in our mind the clearing of brush, etc, to get at other possible alternatives. Again, overall we had a good time. The beach was wonderful!

This is a very solar friendly space! Wide-open space with lots of sun. There are great views if you walk a short distance. After a small hike, we had a fire on the beach and it was very relaxing.

Great dog friendly campsite!

I loved this campsite and hope to be back! There is a large area for camping, games, fires and 2 additional paths. One is a lookout view of Lake Superior (can camp here just no vehicles) and the other is a path to the beach. There is a grill, camp fire ring, wood and a porta potty, which was super clean. It felt very private and well maintained.

Beautiful campsite close to Lake Superior. Really enjoyed my stay. Felt private. Car camped one night and tent camped on the second. Nice fire pit and picnic table for cooking. Spent a lot of time sitting on the beach and on the lookout area for shade, watching sunsets, a great moon rise, and the stars. Great beach combing. Found some agates and animal tracks. Very little shade. Good advice from other reviews to plan for that.

July Stay

We had an absolutely amazing stay! This was by far one of our favorite campsites we've ever stayed at, and we can't wait to come back. After reading the reviews, we expected the walk to the beach to be much longer and more difficult than it actually was. We had no problem carrying our paddleboard, cooler, and chairs down to the beach. The stairs can be a bit challenging with larger items, but with a second person helping, they weren't bad at all. The privacy at this site is incredible and well worth it. The porta-potty was spotless, and the campsite itself is huge, giving us plenty of room to spread out. We do recommend bringing a shade tent since the site gets a lot of sun throughout the day. The bugs weren’t horrible but there are quite a bit of flies, but not enough to bug us. Our dogs absolutely loved both the campsite and the beach, which made the trip even better for us because they are always camping with us. Overall, this site is a 10/10, and we would recommend it over and over again. We can't wait to come back!

We booked 3 nights but ended up not camping there due to the heat dome settling firmly over Wisconsin. We considered off the grid camping to be too dangerous for our dog. Since we were close, we made two day trips to Matt’s place. What privilege to have a Lake Superior beach all to yourself! The property line is clearly marked at the beach and it gives you plenty of room to walk and explore. We haven’t seen anybody else at the beach and that is where we spend all our time. It was too hot to spend time at the camping side. As others mentioned, there is no substantial shade. Bringing something along to provide shade is a very good idea during the summer months. The circular camping spot is large, inviting and clean. The porta potty was well stocked and sparkling clean as well. What is food for thought is the way down to the beach. The hosts describes it well, it must be very slippery after rain. Even when it is bone dry, keep in mind the path is narrow and in parts steep. The pictured ladder is where you will enter and leave the beach. As seen in the photos, there is no handrail and the first step leaving the beach is also missing. You have to be somewhat nimble and have good knees. We brought our medium sized dog (48 pounds) along one visit and he managed the stairs well. Not sure if I understood the property boundaries correctly, but Agate camp did not seem to be 10 acre, it is however a place well worth visiting!

Disappointing experience

We were so excited about this campsite and it really let us down. To be fair, now that we have been there, the photos weren’t inaccurate but do feel misleading. From the camp area there is NO view of the lake…it’s a grass/dirt clearing in a heavily wooded area with a narrow path to the beach. The beach access requires a steep descent down an overgrown and slick trail ending with a ladder missing the final rung for about a foot and a half drop to the beach. I was unable to access the beach given a knee injury that prevented me from managing the steep section of the beach access trail. Looking at photos after experiencing the site, there isn’t anything inaccurate, per se, but it does seem misleading. Disappointed, especially given the price.

We loved our stay at Superior Beach Camp! It’s a very nice big open camping area, and has been well maintained. A couple notes: zero shade and lots of black flies. We spent the majority of our time down by the water which was beautiful. Just a short walk from the site to the beach. It was so nice to have the area to ourselves. We would love to stay here again! Would also be a great spot for a larger group as well.

Beautiful area, you’re far enough out of the way where you can get that nice secluded feel but there is civilization close enough to where you don’t feel abandoned. The outlook area was definitely the highlight, incredible view! The beach access is definitely a trek, you do have to commit to going there. It’s not impossible but hauling stuff back and forth could definitely be tiring. The main area could use some sort of shade, it’s pretty barren. Overall though great little spot!

If you're looking for a wide-open space and a beach with rocks to pick through for hours on end, dark starry nights, going to bed and waking up to the sounds of Lady Lake Superior's waves rolling (or crashing!) onto the shore, falling asleep to frogs croaking and crickets singing, and a chorus of birds in the early morning and throughout the day plus a short jaunt by foot from your spot to the beach, Agate campsite is just for you. We've never camped anywhere other than Spirit Mt. while in the area and let me tell you, Agate does not disappoint. Plenty of room for kids to run around, room for yard games you bring from home, a beautiful look out spot and a trail down to the beach. The sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful, and it's easy to just sit on the sand and relax. Directions to the site are very easy and it's a short drive to Superior and about a half hour to Pattison State Park where you can see Big Manitou Falls, the 4th tallest waterfall this side of the Rockies and only 2' shorter than Niagara Falls. Amnicon Falls isn't far, and the entire area is teaming with wildlife. Before we left we decided we'll be back again for a few days, we loved it that much. Quite the little gem this place is!

We had an great experience at this Hipcamp site! Having our own private beach was amazing - our dog was in heaven. The rocks and driftwood made treasure hunting fun, and the sunsets were beautiful! The weather was in the lower fifties and sunny which was perfect for us - no bugs (except a few ticks). Thank you for a wonderful camping trip, Matt - we will definitely be returning!
