The best camping in Cascade River State Park, MN guide

Overview

About

On the eastern margin of Minnesota’s epic Boundary Waters, Cascade River State Park sits right below Canada on the banks of Lake Superior (just the largest freshwater lake in the world, no big deal). White water gushes down cliffs of black volcanic rock here—the park gets its name from the roaring Cascade River that runs through it. For being so utterly removed from civilization, the trails are extremely well marked, and it’s super easy to make connections to the broader Superior National Park trails. Fly-fishing and geo-caching are popular activities here, but we don’t think you’ll have to search very hard to find a good time at this beauty on the Cascade River.

Notable campgrounds

  • Yellow Medicine Campground offers a serene setting by the river, ideal for anglers and nature lovers.
  • The Horse Campground is perfect for equestrian adventurers looking to explore the park's bridle paths.
  • Backpackers can enjoy the secluded charm of the Watercraft Campground, accessible only by a trek or paddle.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your preferred campsite, as spots fill up quickly during peak seasons.
  • Consider visiting during weekdays for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations for last-minute opportunities to reserve a campsite.
  • Explore nearby camping options if your desired campground is fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Cascade River State Park is during the summer and fall months, when the weather is ideal for camping and hiking. Winter offers a snowy wonderland for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, though some facilities may be limited. Spring can be unpredictable with melting snow and muddy trails.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's website for the latest updates on trail conditions and closures.
  • Remember that Highway 67 is permanently closed; follow alternative directions provided by the park.
  • Prepare for limited cell service; plan your route and communicate with your group in advance.
  • Respect wildlife and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • Visit the park office upon arrival for the latest information and to check in if you're camping.
