FAQ: Our cabin is an off grid (very limited power, now way to charge or plug in AC devices) post and beam structure that we built 9 years ago. It has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There is a large (150 gallon) tank of water for doing dishes and camp showers but we do not suggest drinking it. There is a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. We have wired lights that run off DC power when there is enough solar and we provide some battery packs for charging phones. We highly suggest bring some way to charge any of your personal electronics. There is no reliable way to do that in the cabin. This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. We are very busy with kids and work, we try our best to clean and re-supply between guests but it is not always possible, please let us know if something needs attention!

Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. WELCOME to Happy Hippie Lane Maine! Get your "groove" on or hang loose here on a precious little island with a big bridge just off route one in the heart of Midcoast. Hundreds of guests report the perfect balance of upbeat fun and chill time and call our place and hospitality "magic", "amazing" and "holy guacamole!" It is a lovely spot just off the beaten path but close enough to access the frey. :) I welcome my guests personally and have likely had a chat before you booked. I like to know what your hopes and priorities are around your stay before I accept so I can meet both of our needs. When you arrive, I will greet you and share a little history/tour of the place. I accept travelers between 4 and 9 pm but like all of us schedules fluctuate and we can roll some. There's a strong chance on an average Maine clear summer evening, I have the campfire going and the solar lights around the yard are charged for their evening gentle show. All of the spaces I rent are bedrooms only. You walk a few steps/yards to my 5 bedroom home and access two showers and some kitchen use. I also have an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen that is cute and for your use. It's fun to cook on the fire too! I prefer folks to limit cooking esp in hot weather but support healthier eating and may share some of my foraging tips. The rooms are equipped with plenty of linens and fan power. You will be cozy either way the temps go. There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours! Next door there is a gravel road on a lightly traveled road for your walking or biking pleasure. I am happy to join you in a hilly roller coaster cycling experience and have a few bikes to offer up. I am a WWOOF host and have occasional "helpers" and you are welcome to explore my veggie and flower gardens. This host loves board games and crafts so is often ready to share either or both with guests. There are 150 acres around me that are wooded and pathed so your pup will love it too. We are off the beaten path in the forest near the White Mountain National Forest. A 6 to 8 minute hike from your site gets you to a private lake. We have two local waterfalls only 2 miles away. Drive back out to 5 Kezars road. Take a right on the paved road. It will turn back into dirt. Keep on this road until you see a beautiful stone house on your left. Keep going just up the hill and you will see a right turn into the woods where you can park. There are no signs for Kezar gorge. Hike towards the sound of the falls. There is a small cave under the falls you can climb up into if you are a strong swimmer. There is a second set of falls if you hike down the river. A most magical spot for sure. There is a beautiful hike to a mountain lookout view of an amazing panoramic of lakes and mountains including Mt Washington and Pleasant Ski mountain right from your site. Stuart Little’s dream house is an off-grid cabin on the edge of the woods, in the backyard of our home. The cabin is perfect for people who are camping, but want a little more accommodation. It has two futons that can turn into double beds, table and chairs, small porch, outhouse, limited power and a picnic table. Bring your sleeping bag, headlamp, camp stove, and you are all set! There are also places to pitch a tent, if desired. We are just a mile down the road from where EB White lived. The setting of Stuart Little's dream house (our yard) gives a glimpse into some real Maine living: Boats and boat trailers, a rambling garden, and often a free pile at the end of the driveway. *Note: There is no heat or/ac. There is limited power via an extension chord for a couple devices. We do sometimes lose power if it is windy. *Note: There is no kitchen. camp stove + fuel can be rented for $5/night *Note: Please bring a sleeping bag. Otherwise, bedding/linens can be rented at $10/bed. *Hip Camp likes to say we are less than an hour to Acadia National Park, but I feel that is misleading. My step Dad Bob ‘discovered’ the island in the 1970’s when he was escaping the rat race and looking to get ‘back to the land’. Over the course of three years he built the island house by floating cedar logs across the bay, using a come-along to bring the up to the land, debarked and prepped them for building and set about constructing his off-grid, solar powered home. All without power tools. Both my Mom and Bob were ardent environmentalists and peace advocates. For 20 years they lived year-round on the island and only left when their ages made it difficult to continue cutting/splitting/moving/burning wood and just the ordeal of living so remotely. Most visitors to the island agree the peaceful vibe continues and that is important to us.

A very sweet and rustic Hemlock cabin, along with secluded 17' and 14" bell tents, plus 2 private campsites sit along beautiful Webb Brook. Walk through the large open field, away from everything, to this storybook setting. All you can hear is the waters of the brook rushing and sounds of nature all around. Graham Lake is just a stone's throw away. Great for stargazing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. This magical place is just beyond our farm where we you can buy fresh chicken and duck eggs daily at the house. In the cabin, upstairs, a lofted queen bed accessed by a sturdy wooden ladder. Downstairs, a wood stove with dining area, and living space with full sized convertible bed. No electricity, no plumbing, no wifi. Good cell service. Composting toilet and water tank for use inside cabin. Gas grill and firepit with tripod grate outside for cooking options. Two large picnic tables for outdoor dining. Truly a magical place. The campsites and secluded 2 bell tent sites are hidden away along Webb Brook, sitting among the pines and hardwoods. A port-a-potty available for all guests' use. Almost 9 acres of land to explore and discover, as well as Graham Lake just a walk away.

Wonderful opportunity to rent a reasonably priced rustic camp and support Midcoast Conservancy at the same time. Vert peaceful spot with lots of bird life in springtime. I love hiking in with a full pack and putting the heavy gear in a cart. It’s a great place for families or a quick local adventure.

Sweet spot with a cool river and pond! The road isn’t too bad w 2wd if it’s dry but if it’s wet you may need to hike 1000ft to the cabin. Would recommend if you’re looking for a more remote feel.

We had a great time at the tiny house! The house was cozy and tidy with lots of great outdoor space for the dog to play. Logan was responsive to our questions leading up to and during the trip. It was helpful to have our own headlamps and external batteries for charging as there was very limited electricity.

Amazing spot! Spent the evening and morning fishing the brook, having a fire, and hanging out in the cabin. Cabin had plenty of sleeping space and was super comfy. We had access to fresh water and the option to buy firewood. The wood stove in April was a great luxury.
