Located in the rolling Appalachian hills of Southeast Ohio. This farm has been in our family since 1869 when our relatives settled here from Germany. Originally farmed for cattle and sheep with many orchards over the years our property is now mostly mature forest. Southeast Ohio, including our property is known for its hilly topography and microclimates. Hills range from 400 to 1,100 feet. Nearly 500 acres of land with an additional 200+ acres of Wayne National Forest adjacent to our farm and close proximity to other Wayne areas for outdoor activities. We have nearly 10 miles of available trails for hiking. Many activities can be done at or centered around our property. Such as excellent and challenging road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. We are two miles from the Little Muskingum River. A great river for kayak trips. The Wayne Kinderhook horse and hiking trail is roughly 5 miles from our location. Hike to the Irish Run Natural Land bridge trail also a short drive to the trailhead from our property. Ride your motorcycle up Rt. 26 a great Ohio byway for scenic driving. If motorcycles aren't your method of entertainment and travel. Bring your horse and ride on several of our trails. From steep ascents to long flat ridge lines, you will have lots of time to immerse yourself with nature while hiking. We're next to a section of the Wayne National Forest and a short drive to other similar Wayne activity sites. 46mi from Cedar Creek State Park · 11 sites · Tents, RVs · Summersville, WV
What says agritourism more than a primitive campground on a sheep farm in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia? Here you’re only a short drive from the New River Gorge National Park where you can go whitewater rafting or take a hike and experience the stunning beauty of the gorge, swim or paddleboard in Summersville Lake or go rock climbing on one of around 150 routes on the crags of the lake. In addition, you’ll be within walking distance of the Gauley River with all it’s wild untamed beauty where you can kayak, swim, fish, paddleboard, or splash in a waterfall. Not to mention being on a sheep farm, you can have the opportunity to learn about wool and wool processing. You can even learn how to felt wool and take home your creation! The Tawney Farm is a small-scale wool sheep farm adjacent to the beautiful Gauley River National Recreation Area and just a short drive to the New River Gorge National Park. Our farm lies nestled in between two beautiful mountains, one of them named Panther Mountain, in the Gauley River gorge. Here we raise Merino and Jacob sheep. Our farm is also home to a miniature horse and chickens. Conscious camping a mile from Sutton Lake Dam in West Virginia. Our campground serves as the perfect retreat. A place to unwind, with minimal to no traffic. Off a backroad, with a few creek crossings along the way. You know you are really out in nature. Our property offers lots of places to hike, although in the heart of summer, it can get a little overgrown (Plus critters, yikes!) The creek that runs up the Holler is the perfect place to explore. Low enough to tromp around and catch some minnows. The real winner is Kookie's homecooked meals available for purchase. Using the best ingredients around. Often organic and locally sourced. We can sell eggs, make traditional Spanish bread, offer various treats, homemade delicious ice cream, or even prepare full meals for your crew! Check out our 'Extra's for ordering. Whether you are here to relax and unwind, or enjoy the wild outdoor adventures such as kayaking and hiking. Lots of horseback riding opportunities, or take a walk along the Elk River Trail. Perhaps you are here to meet Braxxie, the Flatwoods Monster. Speaking of... are you interesting in Cryptics? Bigfoot? Ghost stories? Monsters? Do we have some stories for you. Visit our local theatre and catch a live play this summer. Take a seat at the Cinema, grabbing a bite to eat at the Marquee Grill. Visit the Farmers Market on Summer Saturday Mornings. Catch a game of Magic the Gathering or play Nintendo at the Cardboard Colosseum. We are a working farm and do have a flock of Chickens and Guinea fowl. We also are very Kitty friendly here. Unfortunately no dogs permitted at the 'Fairyland' property. However, you can keep your friendly dog on our 'Down the Holler' site. There is always a friendly animal to visit with. Please make sure you are respectful to our home and animals. Keep in mind, the creek can run high in bad weather, so I recommend an all wheel drive car, or with high clearance. That being said, small cars will get through when the creek is down. This is primitive camping. No toilet or shower our amenities are available.

This is also a great home base for dual sport or adventure bike motorcycle riders to camp while adventuring along gravel roads through Appalachia. If you like to camp, but don't want the busy public park experience then you will enjoy the privacy of our camping location. We are also only about a 20-minute drive to downtown Marietta. Where you can find restaurants, bars, and many other fun activities.

In addition to the NRG and Summersville Lake and Dam, also close by are Carnifex Ferry Battleground State Park where you can see where a crucial civil war battle took place, as well as Babcock State Park with its iconic grist mill and waterfall. We provide 7 sites on our farm for every camping style, from dry RV to tent, each with a table, fire pit and grill. All sites are spaciously separate from one another for privacy and perfect for couples who want to get away from it all, or for families or groups of friends who want to reconnect and catch up. Clean portajohns are provided as well as a common area with a dishwashing station and a "to die for" outdoor hot water shower (above-freezing temperatures permitting)!

Please see our link to Army Corps / Summersville Lake rules and regulations. This campsite is adjacent to our home and our neighbor's a-frame! We are mindful of camper's privacy so we do not use that backside of our home while we have campers. You have full access to "The Peak + Pine Loop" which begins at the top of the shared driveway / porta-potty to the entire forest campsite area to the amenity station. When entering and exiting the property you may find us gardening or sitting on our front porch watching the sunset. Need something? Shoot us a message and we are happy to try to accommodate. We are happy to offer recommendations for trails, put-ins, climbing crags, boat rentals, restaurants, shops, etc. Whether you're here to climb, paddle, hike, or simply unwind, Peak + Pine is your cozy basecamp in the woods. The best camping in Cedar Creek State Park, WV guide

Overview

About

For a truly pastoral Appalachian experience, come stay at Cedar Creek State Park in the middle of West Virginia’s wide valleys and sprawling colorful hillsides. The park has a historic schoolhouse complete with potbelly stove and inkwells on desks, while a regular old check-in station just happens to also be a restoration log cabin from the state’s pioneerin’ days. Even the names of rivers lend a quaint charm to the grounds—Little Kanawha River, Sugarcamp Run, and Long Lick Run are great for fishing trout or catfish. The three lakes rent out paddleboats, and there’s even a swimming pool for those wary of the catfish. On muggy days, the recreation building has A/C, in addition to a kitchen, tennis courts, and even a mini golf green! And to really hammer home the charm of this old-time good time, try to visit around the third Thursday in June, when the nearest town of Glenville hosts the West Virginia State Folk Festival! Quilters, crafters, and fiddlers take to the streets, and you can munch on BBQ and cornbread while you take in the dueling banjos and antique car shows.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Cedar Creek State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer months can be quite warm, making early morning or late evening the best times for outdoor activities. Winters are less crowded but prepare for cooler temperatures.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's official website for any alerts on closures or safety advisories before your visit.
  • Ensure you have a map of the park, as cell service can be unreliable in remote areas.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and clothing for hiking and exploring the park's diverse terrain.
  • Remember to pack out all trash and leave the park as pristine as you found it.
  • Accessible facilities are available, but it's best to verify the latest information on the park's website.
