We had a wonderful stay with a group of 9 friends! The farm is quiet, secluded, and so peaceful! It’s walking distance to the Gauley, and one of our days we spent floating in the river as the season hasn’t begun yet. The facilities were really clean, especially for portable toilets. Overall would highly recommend!!

VERY nice area for those who prefer primitive! We LOVED our stay and will definitely be back. Great hosts, great property, great time!
Just be warned, the drive to the property is not for the faint of heart-we were in a 4x4, it was fine. Our friends took a 4 door car, it wasn’t so pleasant for the car lol

Site 1 - Wild & Woolly RV Dry Camping/Tent
This was a great space and the host was super nice. They've put a lot of thought into it. I'd definitely recommend it for a group of friends who all want to tent camp.
The only thing I would cautions is for RVs or trailers. The actual camp site is more than big enough to accommodate one, that's not a problem. But the road to get to it is a windy, hilly dirt road that is barely a lane wide, despite having two way traffic. We had a relatively small travel trailer pulled behind a 4Runner and it was still very sketchy trying to navigate it to the camp site. There were a few times where we came around a corner and were almost hit by someone going way too fast for a road like that, and a couple of times that we almost fell off the road completely trying to get over far enough so someone could pass us. Maybe if you're a very experienced tower it wouldn't be an issue, but for us it was white knuckle the whole time. Just something to think about.
But everything else about it was great!

We had the most peaceful stay here. The campsite is big and away from all the other sites. The port a John’s are very clean. The hosts are so friendly and fun to chat with. I love how off the grid the place is too. Was nice to be forced to be off our phones and just enjoy nature. While it was off the grid, it was still just a relatively short drive to state parks and several hiking trails. A definite place to stay for primitive camping.

Great place with amazing views. Loved how quiet and peaceful it was. Susan and James were very friendly and kind. They offered us a site right next to the pavilion due to the rainy weather.
Even though the weather wasn't great during our stay we had a cozy and peaceful time. Was great seeing the sheep and meeting little Peanut the pony.I'm looking forward to a future visit and seeing the nearby Gualey river again.

The campsite was accessible in our non-lofted, 2WD vehicles. There were porta-potties located at all campsites that were very clean! Ample firewood for purchase on site, and we were greeted and directed to our site as soon as we drove in. Our spot was back in the woods near the pasture and we didn’t hear anyone else even though there were several other campers. We woke up to the sound of sheep in the distance. Running water down at the base and a hot outdoor shower. We also took Susan’s felting class which was great! Fairly priced and we left with little felted roses and a new hobby. I’d definitely stay here the next time I’m around Fayetteville/Summerville!

My partner and I decided we wanted to get away for our anniversary weekend and somehow managed to snag coveted camp spot at Tawney Farm for the last weekend of Gauley Season. While we weren’t there to whitewater raft, we had an amazing time just hanging around the farm, hiking the trails, getting to know Susan and James (and finding mutual connections in WV’s environmentalist circles), and spending time at Site 7. Not only does Tawney Farm offer extensive information about their campsites on their web page (telling you exactly what to expect), you’re also guaranteed access to very convenient amenities: a dish sink, hot showers, and porta-potty. Their sites offer options for socialization with the large field open for group camping, a fire always lit around the stage and group campsite, and friendly faces everywhere to be found. The folks who camp here are regulars, offering stories and sometimes beers in exchange for another friendly face. In addition to all of the wonderful camping perks, this place truly holds a wealth of knowledge and insight into West Virginia’s environmental history and culture. If you’re looking to know more about Appalachia, don’t be afraid to strike up conversation with the Tawneys, and make sure to book a wool felting craft experience and experience an art form as old as the region itself. Susan and James were wonderful hosts, and we cannot wait to come back earlier in the season to catch the farm while more of the annual rafters are milling about.

We enjoyed our stay at Susan's; we liked that we had a large area to ourselves. The listing stated shower, dishwashing basin, and picnic table but I believe a map would have helped to show the distance from the site to the shower/ wash basin. To walk to this area would be more work than what's it's worth being at the head of the hollow and to drive your car down is a pretty steep and rocky path. I would recommend an SUV/ off road vehicle to get to the head of the hollow, pulling a trailer up the hill was difficult at times. The picnic table is only a table under a canopy so be sure to bring chairs for the table and around the campfire. Thankfully she provided a port a john at the head of the hollow (about 150 feet away) and kept very clean.

We enjoyed our time at Tawney Farm. We were the only campers there, and especially enjoyed the solitude. We didn't use the amenities available (shower, entertainment area with board games, cards, etc.) but appreciate that they were available. We will definitely stay again!

We loved tent camping at the head of the hollow. We had such a peaceful weekend. Waking up to the sounds of many birds singing and hearing the breeze rustle through all the trees was a delight. Two vehicles fit great at the spot with multiple tents laid around and spots for our hammock. Susan was a perfect host, she and her husband have such a special spot. She has a lot to offer at the campground and she is very helpful, kind, and informative. Over the weekend we visited Gauley River, checked out Summerville Lake, and spent time at New River Gorge. All are worth checking out and great ways to spend your days if you are active outdoors, but you never need to leave this site to have a great time. You also have clean porta potty’s, fire pits and tents, firewood available for purchase, and a hot water shower just to list a few camping luxuries. Be mindful of your directions as you get closer to the area and screenshot in case you lose service. Susan does a great job at giving you more detailed direction ahead of time. You can swim at the very nearby river access also, and it’s a well known whitewater rafting area all around here. Overall it was a great experience and we would love to come back and stay at the mountaintop site but packed heavily this trip lol. Thank you again, Susan!

We camped at the top site. We had a wonderful time, despite a major storm on the second night. The campsite is extremely well run and Susan was very helpful and charming. The location is ideal for hiking and visiting the New River Gorge National Park. We hope to come back soon.

This was an amazing camping experience! It’s the perfect combination of primitive with tons of privacy for our teenaged daughters and dog and great dishwashing and hot shower for the parents.
Susan and Jim were always helpful, down to small details, and we hiked, swam, and even learned how to felt. Beautiful!!

We loved tent camping on Susan’s land!! She was an excellent host and gave stellar directions and accommodations. She even stayed up late to wait for us to arrive/show us around (we were delayed). She was extremely helpful and friendly, and even had dry firewood and fresh popcorn waiting for us (we paid for the firewood ahead of time but it was raining - the popcorn was a happy bonus). The campsite was great also: pretty scenery, provided table/canopy tent, the bathrooms were very clean, and it was private, with hiking trails along the property. There was also a shower and dishwashing station (with hot water wooooh!) available a short distance away. Overall, 10/10 experience and we have already recommended it to our friends! Definitely go- we will again!

Lovely spot if you are looking for private primitive camping! Well maintained portajohns. Hot water shower and sink available, as well as a sink for doing dishes! Extra camp chairs, games, and activities available too! We stayed at the farthest site so it was a bit of walk down to the amenities but wasnt an issue! There was a large nice canopy at the site which was a total lifesaver because it rained for a chunk of our stay. Susan was SO friendly and offered to show us the river access that is close by. Also lovely to get farm fresh eggs and see the animals!
Be aware though that the property is about 3 or so miles out a gravel backroad. My little car was struggling a bit and I was a little anxious with the rain/mud. I was able to get in and out fine but it was a little stressful because there is also no cell service in the area. Additionally it looks closer to the lake/nat. park than it is. About 40 min drive to the nat.park and 25 to Summersville lake. Would definitely still recommend though - we had a fabulous time!

Lovely! Perfect environment to get away from daily life and recharge in the WV wilderness. Wild and Wooley is all that is says. Peacefully wild camping on the sheep farm and incredibly wild hiking and fishing. Hosts are especially gracious with camping and local knowledge including the best fishing spots and swimming holes within walking distance. Bonuses; clean, quiet, hot water, felting option, and wildlife including a bear sighting.

Susan is such a wonderful host. And the land is beautiful. Be sure to hike the trail to the top of the mountain; the views from up there are incredible. The porta-potties are some of the cleanest I have ever seen, and the hot shower is AWESOME. The gravel road to this location isn't for every RV'er, but it really isn't bad; take it slow, and you should be just fine. Oh, and the firewood is the BEST we have ever purchased from a campground. It burned amazingly.

Easy with everything you need right next to New River Gorge! Stayed a couple nights while I was hiking in the NP, beautiful location in a valley a mile from river access on the Gauley River. Toilets, cold water, a hot shower and friendly host!
