Camping in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park guide

Overview

About

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, named after a brave pioneer woman who escaped captivity from native Indians, is a haven of history and grandiose landscape. In the center of this dense Appalachian wilderness, where Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia meet, sits the picturesque and reflective 1,100-acre Dewey Lake. While most of your time will probably revolve around these perfect waters, you should check out the schedule for the Jenny Wiley Theatre Company, who puts on plays and shows all summer at the outdoor amphitheater. You also can’t miss out on seeing the last one-room country schoolhouse in all of Kentucky! For a more strenuous workout, hike the backwoods trail that Jenny Wiley used to navigate her way to safety in the 1780’s. It’s pretty rugged and steep terrain though, so only try this one out if you have a hiking buddy and are an experienced backpacker. While you'll gain an appreciation for history of this corner of America, you’ll also gain a lot of sweet kickback time secluded by tall pines and a quiet, tranquil mountainside.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Jenny Wiley State Resort Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer months can be quite warm, making early morning or late evening the best times for outdoor activities. Winters are less crowded but can be chilly, so dress accordingly if you venture out during this season.
