Appalachian Retreat

5 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents500 acres · Newport, OH
Located in the rolling Appalachian hills of Southeast Ohio. This farm has been in our family since 1869 when our relatives settled here from Germany. This particular location was originally a home site for my grandfather's sister, Lizzie. Originally farmed for cattle and sheep with many orchards over the years our property is now mostly mature forest. Southeast Ohio, including our property is known for its hilly topography and microclimates. Hills range from 400 to 1,000 feet. On our property you will find dry ridges with tree species like Chestnut Oak or humid valleys that resemble a moss-covered temperate rain forest from the pacific northwest. Much of our property has now reached late stage mature forests with an open understory. Nearly 500 acres of land with an additional 200+ acres of Wayne National Forest adjacent to our farm and close proximity to other Wayne areas for outdoor activities. We have nearly 10 miles of available trails for hiking. Many activities can be done at or centered around our property such as excellent and challenging road biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. We are about one mile from the Little Muskingum river. A great river for kayak trips. The Wayne Kinderhook horse and hiking trail is roughly 5 miles from our location. Hike to the Irish Run Natural Land bridge trail also a short drive to the trailhead from our property. Riding your motorcycle up Rt. 26 is great! A great Ohio byway for scenic driving. This is also a great home base for dual sport or adventure bike motorcycle riders to camp while adventuring along gravel roads through Appalachia. If motorcycles aren't your method of entertainment and travel. Bring your horse and ride on several of our trails. From steep ascents to long flat ridge lines, you will have lots of time to immerse yourself with nature while hiking. We're next to a section of the Wayne National Forest and a short drive to other similar Wayne activities. It's a great place to hear a whip-poor-will sing on a spring night while stargazing as you see a satellite zip past in the sky. If you like to camp, but don't want the busy public park experience then you will enjoy the privacy of our camping location. Camp at our main site along the forest edge near the country backroad with a fire ring and mowed grassy area or there are also several backwoods primitive camp sites available for someone who wants to rough it. We are also only about a 20-minute drive to downtown Marietta. Where you can find restaurants, bars, and many other fun activities.

Coon Creek Cove Hideaway

4 sites · RVs, Tents80 acres · Gassaway, WV
Welcome to Our Homestead Campground! Our secluded 80-acre farm is nestled in a valley between three mountains, where two babbling creeks meet—over two miles from the nearest residence. We raise chickens, ducks, and pigs while practicing permaculture and organic farming, using solar energy for parts of our operation. Enjoy the peace and quiet of our hideaway with modern conveniences like electricity and internet. We’re happy to share our homestead lifestyle or simply provide a quiet place for you to relax. Camp at the Main Circle near our home trailer, cabana, and bonfire area, with access to electricity and Wi-Fi. For a more rustic experience, Kolb Field offers a peaceful spot along Coon Creek, shaded by a majestic walnut tree. You’re also welcome to camp almost anywhere on the property to find your perfect spot. A lightly traveled public dirt road runs through our property. While an SUV or 4x4 is recommended, regular cars can access the site, and we have parking for standard vehicles. Please check with us in advance if you plan to bring an RV. Our farm is a great destination for overland camping—perfect for getting your truck a little dirty! We are cautiously dog-friendly. Our farm dogs patrol the property to protect our free-roaming animals, so visiting dogs must be well-behaved, leashed, and comfortable around other animals. If you're unsure about compatibility, please reach out for advice. Our dogs will come to your camp to "check you out". If your dog has a problem with other dogs that are new to them you must let us know so we can control our dogs. We have had people come with problem dogs and not tell us so, we are asking for a $1 extra that we now require as a pet fee. While you're here, visit our local businesses in Gassaway. At Bigfoot Braxxie's Bikes, you can rent a bike and explore the 40-mile Elk River Rail Trail. Trailhead Farm Meats & More offers our farm-raised, all-natural meats and other local products. For instant or same-day bookings, please note that we may not always be available to respond immediately, but our directions are accurate. If you don’t hear from us right away, you’re still welcome to come and enjoy your stay. We look forward to hosting you and sharing the beauty of our homestead!

Many people have swam in it... like all outdoor activities, they are at your own risk and should have adult supervision when appropriate. *Is there phone service.... service is spotty. *Is there a bathroom... there is a chemical toilet just a short walk from the campsite *Are there weeds and plant life in the lake - Yes, it is a natural body of water not a treated urban drainage ditch... we have at times had issues with vegetation and algae but we have made great strides to keep the lake clear and as natural as we can. *Can I bring a generator... no... we like to maintain the sound of nature for our guest. **Please check out our area tourism website for activities and area information** discover monroe county .org Check out our 5 star lodging reviews online for "The Nest Lodging and Rentals" located near Woodsfield, Ohio.

Dogwood Cabin

1 site · Lodging25 acres · Chesterhill, OH
Dogwood Cabin is an off grid experience. Think glamping. It is set on 25 acres in the rolling hills of Morgan County in southeast OH, close to the village of Chesterhill. Hidden in the woods, back a gravel driveway. No electricity, no running water, no central heat, no WiFi, no cell service. Truly getting out into nature without distractions. Hang your hammock between trees. Build a fire to grill your meals. Relax on the porch swing or by the fire. Hike the property, play in the creek. Dogwood Cabin has a small kitchenette. There is a propane camping stove and some pots, pans, coffee maker, and dishes. We have a grill to place over the fire pit. There are 4 mattresses in the loft. No linens. Bring sleeping bags, etc. No running water. Bring water in jugs for drinking, cleaning up and dousing the fire. Buddy propane heater to take off the chill inside, but not make it cozy. Bring a flashlight or lantern. We have several battery lanterns. On low, the lights should work for 6-8 hours. On high, much less. An outhouse (think wooden porta potty) is not far from the cabin. No cell service or internet. Chesterhill is about 2 miles and has service in numerous places on Main St. We have gone up the hill at the church in Todds - right on Goshen Run, left on St Rt 377, about 2 miles. Firewood is not provided. You can bring your own or scrounge the woods for dead branches and twigs. Please douse the fire before leaving. Rake leaves away from the fire pit. Dry materials could easily start a forest fire. 8 plastic deck chairs are stacked on the porch. Please put them back and secure the cover before you leave. We encourage you to get groceries on your way to the cabin, since it is 30 minutes to a decent grocery store. Chesterhill has Ron's Convenience and Restaurant where you can buy subs, pizza, burgers, fries, and groceries. Triple Nickel Diner in Chesterhill is another neat place to eat. No motorcycles on the driveway. You may enjoy hiking the 25 acres on the property. Nature is awesome, but check yourselves and your pet for ticks. 24 hours before your arrival, you should receive a message with the code to get in at the digital entry door, plus a bit more information that you may enjoy.

Camping in North Bend State Park guide

Overview

About

Named for a fork in the Hughes River, North Bend State Park is all about making good choices. Will you spend your day trail riding on horseback, or fishing along the beautiful streams and boat-accessible 300-acre lake? Don’t forget the hiking trails that run along an old railroad bed from Parkersburg, West Virginia to Wolf Summit. In this charming pastoral wilderness, complete with log cabins, a delicious lodge dining room, mini golf, and abundant wildlife, you can’t really go wrong no matter what you do. One thing you’ve gotta check out? The sections of the North Bend Rail Trail that take you through old train tunnels—one 337-foot-long “raw” tunnel is bored through solid rock, while another is said to be haunted by a woman wearing white. Ride your bike into the center and tell your friends spooky stories!

When to go

The ideal time to visit North Bend State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers warm days perfect for water activities, though it can be crowded. Winters are less ideal due to cold temperatures and limited access to some park areas.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's website for any trail closures or safety alerts before your visit.
  • Ensure you have the necessary permits for fishing or other regulated activities.
  • Accessibility varies across different areas of the park, so plan according to your needs.
  • Take advantage of the available facilities, including picnic areas and restrooms.
  • Always follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park's natural beauty for future visitors.
