This was the BEST place we have stayed in a long time! Bear Den Cabins and Camp was the friendliest, cleanest, comfortable rental. Tammy greats you upon arrival and gives a tour of the grounds, which includes the cleanest bathrooms and showers. A washer and dryer are available, and ice is available for campers to use. The cabins and tents are extremely comfortable. The beds are great! Two pavilions are available to grill in, or sit and talk to other campers if you choose. The only thing that I would change is that they move the camp to New York. But we will drive 1700 miles again to stay there. It’s so convenient to Custer State Park, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Highway, Sylvan Lake. If you’re lucky, you might come up on some kids selling iced tea during your travels. We can’t say enough about Bear Den Cabins and Camp. You definitely would enjoy your stay.

This is an amazing spot to stay. I originally found it from the apartments they have listed right next to the RV sites. The views are amazing, and sites are clean and exactly as expected. Wind Cave is about 15 minutes, and Mount Rushmore is about an hour. We didn’t have time to explore the Hot Springs town right by the location on this trip, but drove through it. We definitely would like to next time, and I think that says it all - we would absolutely come back here next trip to the Black Hills.

The camp site is really nice and far enough away from everything that it’s not noisy but close enough to all attractions. I would recommend staying in the lower sites as upper sites are not as close to the fields. The restaurant next to it has great steak bites, beers and a friendly bar tender.

One of the best Campgrounds we’ve stayed in. Every site is nestled in the trees. Our site was at the end of a cul de sac overlooking a lake. The showers and laundry facilities were always available and clean. The shower areas had plenty of room with hooks and benches. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

This place is officially my favorite hipcamp! When we arrived we were greeted and given a tour by Tammy, who obviously puts a lot of time and energy into caring for this place and her guests. She was around talking to us and the other campers and getting to know everyone individually. The bathrooms were super nice and clean, she provides ice, coffee and tea, a microwave, soap, and amazing tasting water! We spent most of our time in the covered picnic table area which was great for the heat! We would love to come back here when there isn’t a heat advisory going on someday!

We had such a great experience at this campground. The host, Robyn, was so helpful and always quick to respond to any questions I had. We travel with two "fierce" guard dogs—who are actually just puppy doodles that bark because they are curious, want to get to know the neighbors. To give us the most space and privacy, Robyn initially suggested site #6. It turned out we were the only ones there the first night anyway. The kids also had a blast playing with the outdoor games provided at the campground. We loved it here so much that we asked to stay another night, but a group had already pre-booked site #6 for the second day. Instead, Robyn recommended site #4 for two nights. It ended up being super convenient because it's right next to a very clean and fancy porta potty. One of the coolest parts of the stay was seeing hundreds of Turkey Vultures flying over early in the morning and late in the afternoon—it was an incredible sight to watch from the property. We couldn't have asked for a better host or a smoother stay. We highly recommend this place.

About

In Spanish, “angostura” means “narrows.” We’re pretty sure that it also means “awesome fun water adventure land,” but our linguistics are a bit rusty. Anyhoo, if you love water and excellent scenery, you’re gonna love the Angostura Recreation Area. It’s one of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota, with waters that are clear, inviting, excellent, and offer expansive scenery. With 36 miles of sandy shoreline, there’s plenty of room to get your tan on, or work on your beach volleyball skills. All of the usual water-based activities are a blast out here, including boating, fishing, and swimming. You’ll want to stay for a while, so don’t worry, there’s some great campsites to be found.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Angostura Recreation Area is during the warm summer months, from June to August, when the park is vibrant with activity. Conversely, winter can be harsh, with cold temperatures and limited access, making it less suitable for outdoor adventures.

Cascade Campground

I've camped here many times. The lake is beautiful, the beaches are really nice. This year was the first time we stayed in the cabins. I was very unhappy, because the garbage dumpsters are right next to the cabins, and we were extremely bothered by flies the entire week we were there, as well as the smell. The other sites are much better and they cost less. They also recently renovated the restrooms and that improved the experience there a good amount.
