Innumerable beautiful hiking and nature walks surround our site, including Wisconsin's treasured Van Vliet 400 acre Hemlock Preserve - one of the largest old-growth Hemlock forests in the country. We are just one hour south of the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park.
Docking is included for campers and available for non-campers at a daily rate. Our site is situated on one of the most prized lakes for muskie fishing.

River's Edge is a four season adventure company in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, outfitting adventurers with equipment and guidance. The property is located on the Manitowish River, Heart of Vilas County bike trail, and Iron County snowmobile trails. By car we're about eight minutes from WinMan Trails, ten minutes from MECCA Trails and Mercer, three minutes from Manitowish Waters. As we're right on the bike path, riding to lunch or dinner is easy, with lots of yummy options close by.
We have two campsites on our property, primarily for adventurers looking for a central basecamp location from which to go do all the fun things we have available in the Northwoods. Campsites are located on the west end of the property, in proximity to all the activities, and include full hookups, a picnic table and fire ring.
Site One is closest to the river and bike path. It's more secluded and separate from the main lodge area. Of the two sites, this is the best if you plan to hang around camp and chill. It does have trees lining the parking space, so if you have a trailer above 11'-13' be careful backing in.
Site Two is right off of the main parking area next to the lodge building. While we're working on natural barrier growth, it is kind of in the middle of activity during our busy seasons. It is, however, the easiest to back into with a large trailer. If you're looking for a convenient place to bring your RV or trailer and don't mind being less secluded, this is for you. If you're looking for a national forest experience, this is not for you.
The main lodge is open for use until 10pm-ish. There are couches, tables and board games available for guests. A bathroom is available for campers in the lodge, however there is no shower. We highly recommend The Manitowish Waters Athletic Club for shower facilities, hot tub, and pool. Day passes are reasonably priced and the facility is extremely well appointed. It's about three minutes by car or ten by bike.
Campers get a discount on rental equipment. Wifi is available in the lodge.
Our sites are open year-round, although water service will be turned off when temps are below freezing.

You'll be camping on our Stanley lake sugarbush property. Lakefront sites have power and water - are located in a grassy clearing on the shores of Stanley Lake. ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON PROPERTY!!
Primitive sites are amongst the maple trees of our sugarbush operation, within walking distance of the lake. These sites do not yet have water or electricity, but water is available from spigots at the lake clearing.
Stanley lake is just shy of 400 acres, known for walleye and bass. It is an all sports lake with no limited wake hours. Feel free to roam our woods - you will notice the blue maple lines come to an end at our east and west property lines, as well as a no trespassing sign on the lake clearing to the west line. Deer here are plentiful, and you can often get them to eat from your hand, provided you have apples. Iron county has a tremendous ORV/snowmobile trail system. You can drive your machine right from our property to the trails. There are two golf courses in the area, as well as a vast bicycle trail system. Ski Brule ski hills and sporting clay operation are a few miles from the property. Countless acres of public land for recreation!

Beautiful log cabin nestled in the Northwoods of Wisconsin on a dead-end dirt end. Enjoy 1240 sq ft of living space on 4 wooded acres bordering county forestland. The cabin features a large 20'x13' master bedroom with a large electric fireplace and patio doors leading to a 500 sq ft deck. The master bedroom has a King-sized Sleep Number bed, 2 end tables, a dresser, and a chair and ottoman.
A separate laundry room with a utility sink and closet for coats, boots, etc. is located just inside the front door.
The main bathroom features a double vanity, plenty of cabinet space, and a jetted tub. Towels and washcloths are provided.
The great room is a true entertainment area with a kitchen tucked in the corner that contains everything you need from utensils to plates to pots and pans along with a 3 stool breakfast bar and a kitchen table for 4 people. The great room also contains a love seat, couch, chair, and ottoman and a 55-inch flat-screen TV with streaming services. In the center of the great room is a beautiful stone and knotty pine fireplace and patio doors leading to a 300 sq foot deck that overlooks the forest and a heavily traveled deer trail.
Off of the great room is the 2nd bedroom which has 1 Queen bed, a dresser, 2 end tables, and a television with streaming services. A private 3/4 bath (sink, toilet, and shower) is adjoined to this smaller bedroom.

We run a holistic healing retreat from our home, but when we are not doing those we offer up our beautiful bell tents for campers. Each tent has two full beds, side tables with lamps, a fan, and electricity. Our property is on 7.8 acres of which 80% is wooded, and on Fish Lake/Pelican River with a dock for access to the water. There is no public boat launch, so all watercraft must be able to be carried to the water. There is a fire pit by the lake with plenty of seating to hangout and watch the Northern Lights. We have large gardens and chickens plus we work here, so you will see us around. We do have roosters and they do make noise, but we find that our clients get used to them quickly. Our property is a great basecamp for exploring the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Only 10 minutes from downtown Rhinelander, but you feel like you are way out in the woods.

Weekend Trip to Simplicity @Top Of The Hill Huskies
This spot is a truly perfect off-grid getaway. I couldn't have asked for a more prepared or inviting experience.
The host went above and beyond by having the wood stove prepped and ready for immediate use, along with some initial firewood provided. Since the temperature dropped into the 30s, I did burn through two bundles of wood over the course of the night to stay warm (which worked perfectly, with the fire only needing restarting once!).
The cabin itself is a cozy sanctuary, and it was exactly the recharge I needed. I am already wanting my next trip back!
Future visitors: If you're staying during cold weather, be prepared for at least two bundles of wood to last the night. Also, I highly recommend bringing a good camping lantern with you, a flashlight felt a little weak for lighting the whole space.

This place is great. Close to everything. The staff is friendly and helpful with great tips on where to go and what to eat. Brandon, Chris and Jeremy really stepped up to make our experience great. We were a short drive from the mountain bike trails and a short walk from the river for a paddle.

Great location! Beautiful spot right on the river. Very friendly workers at the lodge as well. Might not be for the kind of camper who just wants to sit at their site all day but if you're lookong for an adventure down the river or to get some mileage on the beautiful bike trails then this is an AMAZING spot. We will definitely be back.

Silver Maple tent site has abundant room including two picnic tables. Surroundings offered a flat tent space, lovely tall trees to hear the wind’s rustle leaves and look up at the canopy above with mesh ceiling. Near a pit outhouse, bonus. Just a brief gravel road to beautiful wood showers and more amenities like an outdoor sink with faucet, Starlink internet and dock at lakeside for stargazing or other fun. Welcoming hosts, just look for gravel road turn by handful mailboxes before/after Wicklund (don’t turn there). You’ll know the entry point from seeing blue property lines. Look forward to a return trip!!

This campsite was very nice because it was large and had many trees around it. We appreciated having access to the lodge. We arrived late the first night and decided to enjoy the indoor fireplace instead of making a fire at our campsite and it was so nice! We were also able to get our morning coffee inside.
We also appreciated that it's directly across from a put in on the Manitowish River so it was simple to go paddling.

This place was perfect - a cozy Midwest romantic getaway, as my boyfriend called it. We stayed in the orange tiny house, which had two beds, and an indoor fireplace which kept us warm at night. Diane provided us with plenty firewood and had other cooking utensils if needed. The stars were beautiful at night as well which was an added plus. We loved how private and cozy the stay was. We plan to come back again next month! Thank you Diane!

The shed is a great little spot! Clean and comfortable. Was a bit muddy to get there, but not a big deal if you have all wheel drive. It is in the woods, a little mud is expected after rain. Nice to walk with my dog off-leash on the trails they use for the dog sledding. You can hear the huskies sometimes, but they were silent thru out the entire night. Will definitely recommend this place to friends and be back myself sometime!

Matt takes excellent care of the property. His pride is obvious. He shares stories about the history of the resort. Everything is CLEAN! Each site has its own trash and recycling bins, so no hauling. I don't need to explain how wonderful it is to have our water hookup and sewer hookups right on site. We also had great conversations with him. I'd highly recommend!

We had the most magical fall getaway in the forests of Upper Wisconsin, it was absolute paradise! 🍂 We stayed in the adorable cabin, which was cozy perfection with super comfy beds and lovely bedding. The stove was such a treat. We accidentally got it way too hot and had to air it out, but it made the cabin feel extra warm and romantic.
Our pup Leslie loved being off-leash and exploring the property, and the short, beautiful walking trails they carved out were perfect for peaceful strolls. We also loved that there’s so much great hiking nearby if you want to drive out and explore. Even with a rainy weekend, it was perfect to snuggle up in the cabin and enjoy the sounds of birds, ducks, coyotes, and the friendly huskies on site.
The nearby town of Eagle River is so charming, we could almost plan another trip just to hang out there! The host was perfect: super responsive but gave us total privacy to enjoy our solitude. Highly recommend for anyone craving cozy comfort, fall colors, and complete relaxation!

Overview
About
Northern Highland American Legion State Forest is a mouthful so the legion uses the acronym NHAL instead. A park after Hipcamp’s own heart, the NHAL is 232,000 acres of north woods with so much hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and hunting it has it’s own trail app! That’s right folks, at NHAL getting lost is a choice, not an OH SNAP! moment. With that in mind, don’t be timid! Explore McNaughton, Madeline and Lumberjack trails by bike in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter or simply be overcome by wanderlust while meandering through the vast network of dirt roads. Horse optional.
When to go
The best time to visit Northern Highland American Legion State Forest is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the lakes are perfect for swimming and boating. Fall brings a spectacular display of colors, ideal for photographers and leaf peepers. Winters can be harsh, with heavy snowfall limiting access to certain areas.

We camped at firefly last Year all Full! Sites by the lake where open Some for 3 day some more! 13 days a double was open It made us sick to are stomach! The people finally showed up on Saturday! They forgot all about it! These weren't campers with a U-Haul trailer THEY did't even care! Campers down 1big Camper 40' Regular tents Big House tent to eat And 4cars 1big Truck and 1big SUV that they wouldn't move all week Blocking have the road and did not want to move so you had to get real close to the trees We finally made her move we couldn't get by and I wasn't gong to wreck my Camper! Oh by the way 13-16 people from Illinois! You want to talk about Mad Camper! all around. We should have Reservatinos just like Florida Wisconsin 11 months

My happy place! It's beautiful, and being able to wade, swim or paddle from your campsite is a total delight. Wander down the trails for picture perfect photo ops!

We camped here many years ago. This is a great area with the lakes and small towns nearby. Heavy woods with evergreen and trees. We built great outdoor fires and camped in the section for tents. People were friendly. Town of Lake Tomahawk is nearby, no stop light town. Some resturants and super meat market. A must stop. Minocqua is the other way.More developed and likely the way you came up. Widelife possible is broad, eagles, hear possible wolf /coyotes at night, bears around, we did not see them. Area can have ticks in eary summer. Mosquitoes vary with the rain fall. Park well run.

I grew up camping here. Its a great campround for kids, and has great fishing. There is a decent hiking trail next to the beach.

This lake is great for boaters. If you have a lakeside site, you can pull your boat up to your site. Great fishing.

Car camping doesn't get any better than this. We stopped here on a whim and will return. Beautiful views, wooded sites and lake access. Even saw bald eagles!!
