Beaverdam Falls

4 sites · Lodging65 acres · Covington, VA
Nestled on a private 65-acre farm in the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia, Beaverdam Falls is located on VA SR-311 (Kanawha Trail) in the Sweet Springs Valley. Nestled in the old community of Earlehurst, between Covington & Roanoke, Beaverdam Falls are an historic series of waterfalls on private property. The Falls are at the headwaters of Dunlap Creek and are the terminus for the Sweet Springs. Available for guest stays & recreation, are the Upper Falls portion. Surrounded by the verdant George Washington National Forest, the Upper Falls, displays a constant waterfall of around 40-feet in height, & decorates the final mile stretch of the Sweet Springs, both on our property. Additional beautiful cascades pepper our tract of Beaverdam Falls as well. This private tract of unparalleled Virginia countryside will simply astonish your expectations. As the source of the Falls, Sweet Springs Creek, serves as a long, unique home for trout, calcified travertine rock, chalybeate water, and ancient beaver dams (as well as active ones!). Beaverdam Falls is a rare place for the lack of stone and the centuries of beavers who have left their trace in & on our creek—and swamp, the Stick Marsh, which has an active beaver dam. Be careful! They do bite!

Savage Acres on Craig Creek

6 sites · RVs, Tents120 acres · New Castle, VA
In a remote valley, along the banks of Craig's Creek, just north of Roanoke VA, the property includes mature hardwood forest, pasture, and an 1830s log cabin where we live. We love to share this special place with visitors, and have some basic amenities for campers. The campsites are at the edge of a large pasture and just a few steps from Craig Creek and our big swimmin' hole. Totally secluded in a remote valley - no houses or roads in sight (but our cabin is a short walk through the woods if you need something), no cell service for most providers, but within a short drive of Roanoke and Blacksburg, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.

IRON Peak Ranch

2 sites · RVs, Tents88 acres · Wytheville, VA
We have traced this farm's history back to the 1750's when a mill was built on Reed Creek. There is a log home that we know that was built in 1840 still on the premises. The white farm house across from the camp sites was built in 1877. The fish hatchery that is still in operation today was built by the Federal Government in 1923. Learn more about this land: Camp site situated along 3 separate creeks connected by one large private 11 acre field. Tate Run/ Reed Creek/ Venrick Run. The farm house is across the road and the whole property comprises of 88 acres of woods and pasature. The farm house was built in 1877 and the Ranch currently operates with 30 head of cattle and a working trout hatchery. We have traced this farm lineage back to the 1750's when a mill was constructed at the meeting of Tate Run and Reed Creek by Swiss Immigrant Henry Grubb. Camping here along Reed Creek is peaceful and quiet. Located just a few short miles from town it is easy to get to ...but a long way from the world at large. In Short, it is lovely and we hope you enjoy it.

The best camping near Bluestone National Scenic River guide

Overview

About

If a vacation in a rugged, mountain wilderness sounds like heaven to you, then southern West Virginia has what you need. Surrounded by mountains, the Bluestone River Valley offers plenty of boating, fishing, hiking, and animal-watching. You can only access this 10.5-mile national waterway from the two adjacent state parks if that tells you anything.

Jump on the Turnpike Trail, a 9.5-mile wooded trail that follows an old river road. The trail connects both of the adjacent state parks, both of which have more hiking trails and loop trails. Make sure to wear blaze orange during hunting season, as this area is open to hunters. If fishing is your thing, get ready for abundant bluegill, rock bass and smallmouth bass in this river valley.

The forest has reclaimed a lot in this area, including the lost town of Lilly, one of the first European settlements in West Virginia. The Lilly family returns to this area every year to celebrate their heritage. You might see signs of this town, and other human settlements, during your hike or fishing trip.

Getting to the Bluestone River area is half the fun. Take a tram from May to October for great mountain views from Pipestem Resort State Park, or hike in from Bluestone State Park. There are a few dirt roads that take you down to the river.

Every season offers something beautiful here. Whether you love active wildlife in the spring, kayaking, and canoeing in the summer or gorgeous fall foliage in October. The forested land of Bluestone Gorge hides plenty of natural bounty if you just know where to look.
