Boundary Country Trekking

For centuries the people of the Mongolian plateau have found yurts to be comfortable, convivial dwellings. These round, peaked-roofed, canvas-covered huts are warm and cozy. Over the past twenty years hundreds of skiers traveling the Banadad Ski Trail have found our yurts to be comfortable winter lodging. Now you can enjoy the comfort of a wilderness yurt all year round at the new Tall Pines Yurt. Do not forget to bring your sense of adventure. Inside the yurt Members of the Minnehaha Academy Ski Team The Tall Pines Yurt is located on the edge of the Boundary Waters near a stand of old growth white pines and on Hooker Lake, named by some comic loggers. Half of the lake is in the Boundary Waters. The Tall Pines, twenty-foot housekeeping yurt, is attractively furnished and is set-up to accommodate up to four people, sleeping on a futon and bunk beds. Additional cots or bunk beds can be brought in for larger groups. The yurt is heated by a wood stove / fireplace, has overhead gas lighting and a camp kitchen with pots, pans, dishes, utensils, cook stove, dining table and chairs. Ask us about making camp coffee. Outside is an attached deck. A firepit, charcoal grill and most importantly, a Finnish sauna are nearby. Outhouse is located near the yurt also. Hooker Lake is a natural environmental lake, requiring a significant setback for any structure. Over the years forest growth has occured around the shore, which has limited the visibility of the lake from the yurt. This lake is slowly turning into a bog and in the summer, it's surrounded by lots of bog flowers. It is a pretty lake, but not suitable for fishing or swimming. Yurters can drive over to the Bed & Breakfast and fish and swim in Little Ollie Lake or portage into a nearby lake. During the non-snow months you hike in three hundred feet from the summer parking area. The trail to the yurt connects to some of the finest mountain biking trails in the area. Hiking trails are just out the door and a canoe is provided for your use. During the winter the yurt is an exclusive silent sports accommodation, accessible by a 1-kilometer ski or snowshoe trek on a groomed trail from the Lace Ski Lake Trail or winter parking area. The eastern trailhead of the Banadad is 2 kilometers away by skis. For the adventuresome skier, Boundary Country Trekking offers Yurt to Yurt Skiing between the Tall Pines and Croft Yurts along the Boundary Waters longest tracked trail: the Banadad. In the winter, we bring in your luggage and food containers. In the summer, you can drive to a parking area near the yurt if you drive a high clearance vehicle. We supply and bring in your water.You bring in your drinking water containers. Year around, we recommend a picnic cooler to hold your food and ice. Ice is available at a local grocery, a three mile drive. During the winter, the Tall PInes yurt is not available on weekends or holidays, until one week before a weekend or holiday. The Tall PInes yurt is available for yurt to yurt resevations only for weekends and holidays. Pets welcome at the Tall Pines Yurt for a nominal fee. All our accommodations, including the Tall Pines Yurt, are smoke free. Because the yurts are located deep in the woods you might be visited by mice. We keep traps in the yurts and we run the mice trap line often.

Our family has lived here on this property since Great Grandma Alma bought it in 1928. I am the fourth, raising the fifth generation of Carlson's living here. The log cabin was built by my grandfather, Oliver, in the 1950's and he lived there full time after he retired. The cabin is set apart from the two other homes on the property which is where our family lives full time. Birch Lake is over 6500 acres and stretches for 16 miles from our home to where HWY 1 passes over it. Most of the shoreline is federal and state land giving the lake a wild/undeveloped feel compared to more developed lakes in the area. It's known for producing walleye, northern pike, and crappie as well as other species of fish. SUMMER OF 2024 Update: The cabin will be under construction/improvement for this season. What this means is that only the main room will be available. We will be dismantling the back bedroom and old kitchen. This will impact your stay in terms of visible structural work to the cabin taking place but will not affect the main room or it's amenities. I will not be working on the cabin during any guest stays and will make sure the site is safe and clean for your stay with minimal indication work is going on. I'll make sure the main room of the cabin is clean and ready for your stay but the back bedroom will no longer be useable. The main room will still be bug free, dry, and have electricity. The grey couch is suitable for 1-2 people to sleep on, the beige couch pulls out a full/queen, and there is a cot for another. You may bring your own cot/sleeping pad or pitch a tent in the spacious and grassy lawn. Also note there is a new outhouse (the green one in pics). The old one is still pictured (hipcamp doesn't have a delete option) but not in use. Trust me, the new one is better. There is a small (12 foot) aluminum row boat and a pedalboat available for guests to use. What we provide: One room log cabin with guest only private beach. Electricity, outhouse, small kitchenette with limited utensils, fridge, small gas grille, microwave, toaster oven, hotplate, electric tea kettle, clean fitted sheets, and cot. What you'll need to bring: Sleeping bags/blankets, potable water or water treatment system, green propane cannister if you'd like to use the grille, charcoal if you'd like to use the larger grille, tp, etc. Please ask for more specifics. Can usually and am happy to accommodate.

We do not have running water at the homestead, so the closest potable water source is Toimi School. Wild raspberries line the homestead and the road, bring your bucket to fill as you walk over to fill your jug of water. We have a stream that runs thru our 38-acre property, if you care to hike along any of the trails that have been cut you may find it! We have Adirondack chairs for lounging and an outdoor play kitchen with toys for the kids. The fire pit on the homestead is shared among the campers and the homestead guests. Feel free to start a fire in the pit and pull up a chair. Enjoy the company of your fellow camper! The homestead is located in the perfect spot for the North Shore explorer! 1 hour 18 minutes to Ely, 30 minutes to Two Harbors and Silver Bay, 1 hour 50 minutes to Grand Marais. Countless other stops along the way including Black Beach, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse and Iona's (Pink) Beach.

Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use. Do you have a grill or fire pit? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a propane BBQ. We supply the propane and utensils. There is a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so. How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise. Winter Conditions: We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis. We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway. Pets: 
We do not make exceptions to our Airbnb no-pet policy other than service animals. Any pet hair will result in a minimum $250 fine regardless of any circumstances and any additional billing that the cleaners require for excess cleaning due to pet residue.

Tent camping with firepit on hillside campsite. Second firepit at the end of the driveway. Hiking/Biking Options: There are no marked trails on the property. For guests interested in hiking we recommend: 1) The 310 mile Superior Hiking Trail easily accessible at multiple locations throughout Grand Marais OR 2) The Woods Creek Superior Hiking trailhead approximately 1 mile from property; parking lot at trailhead. Biking not possible on site but nearby gravel roads are an option for advanced riders or bikers looking for a challenging ride. The campground is spread out over 5 acres of forest that you’ll hike into from Bresette Hill Road. After parking at the trailhead, you’ll gather your bags and hike into your glamping site. The trail winds through the woods, leading you first to a valley where the seasonal Clark Creek runs through in the spring. The first two campsites are on the other side of this valley. The trail can be steep in spots and requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility to reach the secluded campsites. The third site is a bit farther into the forest, the little A-frame cabin, Anchor sits on the edge of the spring-fed Brickyard Creek that flows year-round. We have many plans for the property and depending on when you stay, the campground will be in various stages of development. The campsites, trailhead / parking area, and trails are scheduled to be completed in early spring. We hope to add amenities such as a camp sauna and screened-in gazebo later in the 2024 summer / fall. We are always here to help if need be when you arrive.Bring bug dope, the bugs can be very hungry right about dusk time til about 30 min after the sun goes down. If you have kayaks or paddleboards you are welcome to bring them and enjoy the lake. Watercraft (boats/jet ski's) not allowed.

About this space The "Kick Back Tiny Shack" has a queen size bed, small futon bed (for a child) along with two single camp cots. This tiny house can sleep up to four people (2-3 most comfortably) depending on your needs. There is a mini fridge with mini freezer along with a mini gas range/oven, microwave, coffee pot and toaster. There is a TV with only local channels available. Wi-Fi is available at nearby restaurants. AT&T works well here, all others are very sketchy. The cabin has a freestanding gas fireplace to keep you cozy and warm. Come prepared to relax. This is a rustic cabin with all amenities so no need to pack up dishes, bedding, towels, etc. (bring sleeping bag and pillow for anything other than the queen size bed.) The kitchen is fully stocked with your basic cooking and dining essentials. If you don't want to do dishes you are welcome to bring your own paper plates, etc. Coffee, Salt, pepper, dish soap and hand soap, toilet paper and one roll of paper towels provided. There is no running water, but you will be supplied with pump faucet with 5 gallons of water for the kitchen sink for doing dishes, etc. There is also a pump faucet for the outhouse sink. You can heat water on the stove with the camp coffee pot supplied. In addition, drinking water will be supplied also. There is a heated outhouse next to the cabin which has a shower stall in which you can shower with a electric pump shower and fill 5 gallon bucket with solar camp shower bag. Towels will be available and if you need more water, you can contact us, and we can refill at our home which is located next door. The contact information will be provided with your booking confirmation. Please allow notice in case we are not home at the time. You have your own private yard on our 6 acres with a screen tent, BBQ pit, firepit and grill off of the back deck. If you chose to bring a four-wheeler, canoe, boat or snowmobile there is plenty of parking space depending on the quantity. Come and unwind or explore the many wonders that the Northwoods has to offer! AT&T works well but all other cell services are sketchy. Although we are animal lovers, no pets are allowed. No smoking is allowed in the cabin. Ashtrays will be available to you if you would like to smoke outside. Please do not leave cigarette butts anywhere but in the ashtrays or firepit. When using firepit be aware of wind and do not have campfire in extremely windy days/nights. Extinguish fire when not attended. Buckets of water will be available during dry times of the year. Please note that at certain times burning bans may be in effect. Bring bug spray in the spring/summer! Be aware that this is bear country and store your food inside. The interior of the cabin is newly refinished. The exterior will be improved as time goes by. Since the cabin and outhouse were moved to their private spot recently, there is not much grass yet. Please be patient with us as we are new to this, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is a private wooded lot. Lakes, rivers and trails are nearby. For those looking for a quiet place, it is mainly a quiet area to listen to the sounds of nature. The cabin is set back but it is located on a main road in which people do travel. You may rarely hear gunshots at times as neighbors may be hunting on their land, etc. Please be considerate to our neighbors. Quiet time is between 10pm to 8am. The Kick Back Tiny Shack is located about 25 miles north of The City of Duluth, about 30 miles from the Miller Hill Mall Area, 25 miles northwest of Two Harbors, 80 miles south of Ely. The Mother Bear Ski Trail is approximately 12 miles north for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The Pequaywan Area Walking Trail is located approximately 4 miles North. The Skibo Scenic Lookout is located approximately 40 miles away. We have snowshoes available for rent. Please bring your own cross-country skis. Events in Duluth some of which include Grandmas Marathon and Beargrease Sled Dog Race. Beargrease has been cancelled in 2024. Explore thousands of acres of public forest land and endless miles of some of the best recreational trails Minnesota has to offer. There are plenty of outdoor activities surrounding us including: Canoeing, Kayaking, fishing, swimming, rock picking, fall colors, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, four wheeling, snowmobiling, hunting, stargazing and Northern Lights. There are many local events at the Pequaywan Inn along with Hugos bar 218-848-2220. Hugos Bar is a set up bar/restaurant and also has a small grocery store and a liquor store, gas, bait and propane.

We have a micro organic farm with hundreds of wild apple trees and believe in leaving the land better than we found it. Rob loves permaculture, managing soils, pruning apple trees and feeding his community nutrient dense food. I work as a hospice nurse and help out on the farm when I am able and we have 2 boys, Arlo and Owen. We keep busy! We offer 3 rustic rentals onsite, but each is very private and secluded. Consider all 3 for a larger gathering! We look forward to hosting you for a farm visit.

This off-grid (NO RUNNING WATER) cabin is nestled in beautiful mixed forest five miles inland from Lake Superior. It sleeps up to 4 and includes propane heat and cooking stove/oven, as well as limited solar produced electricity. A wood stove provides additional heat and ambiance. An outdoor fire pit and gas grill (and charcoal grill) are other cooking options. A short trail leads to a vault privy and outdoor games and night sky lounge chairs are available in the shed. Hike the groomed trails on-site, hop on the nearby Superior Hiking Trail or head up to one of the North Shore State Parks. All dishes, cooking supplies and bed linens are provided. Showers vouchers are provided during summer months for the Burlington campground in Two Harbors.

About

The rugged wilderness trails and primitive hike-in sites at George H. Crosby Manitou State Park aren’t for the faint of heart, but if ultimate seclusion and killer views pump you up, this place couldn’t be more worth it. Waterfalls pour into volcanic canyons and rare mammals roam free here on the north shore of Lake Superior (moose, deer, bears, and wolves, to name a few).

Bensen Lake and the Manitou River emerge gloriously through dense swaths of spruce & fir, all largely undisturbed per the wishes of the park’s namesake—George H. Crosby was a mining magnate who donated the land on the condition that it wouldn’t be developed on too much. It was Minnesota’s first backpacking-only site, and has been intentionally maintained as a haven for backpackers all these years. Pack up and git over there!

When to go

The best time to visit George H. Crosby Manitou State Park is during the summer and fall when the weather is ideal for hiking and nature viewing. Winter brings a serene beauty, perfect for snowshoeing, though travel may be more challenging. Spring's thaw can make trails muddy and less accessible.
