This historic retreat rests at the foot of lower Chanchelulla 'black rock' Mountain.
Bordering a Wilderness Area this land is pristine and wild inhabited by many animals and incredible bio-diversity such as Pileated Woodpeckers, Golden Eagle, Bald Eagle, Blackhawk, Goshawk, Great Horned Owl, Flying Squirrel, Pacific King Snake, Salamanders and Protected Spawning Rainbow Trout.

Humboldt Hideaway is a small off-the-grid LGBTQ+ queer land project in Northern California. It is set on 12 acres of hilly terrain in the mixed fir and oak woods of Humboldt County, a half-hour east of Arcata. Back in 2001, when it was established, it was undeveloped with nothing on it. It has since been built up with the scrappy efforts of amateur creative dreamers.
It is a home and resource to extended LGBTQ+ communities by being a small-scale rural resource for learning and sharing useful rural living skills and being a destination for visits, artist and activist retreats, and host to small groups and events.
Anyone is welcome at Humboldt Hideaway, but please understand that it is an intentional place committed to anti-oppression values. It is important that it remain a safer space for people identifying as queer and/or transgender, as well as a supportive space for women and people of color to freely be. Please make sure you do not anticipate any concerns/problems with this.
NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: The property is conveniently located midway between the coast/redwoods and the Trinity River/Trinity Alps backpacking. It is a 45 minute drive to the coast of Trinidad, which has some of the most lovely coves and beaches and Patrick's Point State Park. It is a half hour drive to the coastal Ma-le'l dunes. And it is a half hour drive inland to swimming holes on the Trinity River.
OFF-THE-GRID: The place is off-the-grid, no internet, only limited solar power, an on-demand propane water heater, and heated by woodstoves. Structures are a combination of natural building, salvaged, and new materials, with a mix of low-tech alternative technologies- all built with lots of love and help from friends.
BOOKING A GROUP: There is potentially both cabin space and camping spots. The property can accommodate a group of up to 10 people. If you wish to book a group, please get in touch and we'll have you book all of the spaces- including some that are not currently listed, as they are in the shared lodge space.

Osprey’s perch is a small campsite perched above the Salmon River. The pit toilet is just downhill from the camp at the end of a trail winding down through the meadow and to the right. There is private access to secluded swimming and fishing holes on the lower Salmon River down the meadow trail and to the left. A bridge provides shelter from rain if needed. The area is known for its world class steelhead fishing and is unparalleled in its natural beauty. Beautiful piece of land. The instructions to get there could probably be simpler. However I was still able to get there first try. The place is right off the road so it’s not so private but in the evening/early morning no one really comes by. Still, its peaceful. We really enjoyed the scenery and creek :) thanks!

Wow! Exquisite, mostly flat, and very clear area. Silo toilet worked as expected, nice benefit to have so close to the site. Light was helpful for set up but a bit aggressive for camping ambiance. Road felt way longer than it was when we went up at night but was actually pretty chill. Didn’t try the fire but was intrigued and love the concept. Trees were great to wrap lights on. Jumping off the bathroom platform was fun but maybe a bit treacherous in the dark (there are stairs though). Trail and bench was very cute, the little stream burbled delightfully. Sunlight never really made it to us - time is an illusion. Would stay here again with more propane.

This place was amazing. We spent 3 nights here in early January and it was everything we wanted. Sleeping in the rain forests while its raining was amazing. Having a toilet was very convenient with kids. The directions to this camp spot at first looks intimidating but its really easy. We havent slept that well in awhile and having a private camp spot made it feel very intimate. You can have spotty cell receptions. We were able to stream some youtube for the kids. We will return in the summer for a longer stay.

Lovely property right above the river! The host is kind and thoughtful. I appreciated the self serve check in as I arrived very late after a long day of driving. There are a variety of sites, and I was lucky to be upgraded to the beautiful Perch! It has a private deck overlooking the river, comfy bed + electricity, access to sweet bathhouse with shower+toilet. My pup and I enjoyed the whole property to ourselves and spent a lot of time by the water. It's clear there is a lot of care for the space. HIGHLY recommend!

I had an incredible stay at this riverfront camp. The property itself is beautiful, peaceful, clean, and right on the water. Michael, the host, was extremely hospitable and kind. You can tell he truly cares about the land and the people who come to enjoy it.
Waking up to the sound of the Trinity and being able to step out and swing flies right from camp was unreal. I managed to bring a few nice steelhead to the net without ever having to leave the property. If you’re a fisherman, this place is gold. If you’re a family looking for a quiet place to relax, swim, explore, and enjoy the outdoors, it’s perfect for you too.
Highly recommend. I’ll be back.

We had a great time camping here! The site was beautiful tucked amongst the redwoods and it felt very protected and private. We had our dog with us and felt comfortable with her off leash since the campsite was so contained. It was really nice to have a bathroom and picnic table too. The short nature trail was cute and we found a few banana slugs! The written directions from the host were great and super easy to follow to find camp. Highly recommend staying on Chris’s land for your next weekend in the redwoods!

This was our second stay and all went very well. Beautiful area. We stayed in the Tiny Home this time, partly I choose this because there were high winds predicted. Both the Tiny Home, the cute camper and their composting outhouse are very nice and all are very clean. There's room for a person and two dogs or two people if one wants the floor, such as a child. Great stay.

I had a wonderful time at One Thing Ranch with Nancy! The airstream was comfortable with plentiful amenities. The kitchen was fully stocked, the heater worked, and the space was spacious for sleeping and working. The animals were so fun; I got to meet each of them and give them snacks :). This is a lovely getaway in a beautiful zone of California. I enjoyed exploring the area and spending time on the property. Thank you for having me!

We ended up being the only campers on an early November day, so Wayne graciously let us choose whichever site we liked. We pitched our tent right by the communal fire pit and picnic tables instead of a designated site. The ground was easy to drive stakes into, and Wayne even offered more substantial stakes in case they were needed.
His sweet dog (Cowboy) and horse (Coco) paid some very welcome visits. They're sneaky for treats, so watch your back! ;)
A hose is nearby that supplies filtered fresh spring water, and the toilet room is very convenient. The hot showers were down due to some construction, but we enjoyed our stay a lot! We would recommend this place as a nice getaway, or as a stop on your way to the redwoods or Eureka (we did both).

Every time I come back here I fall in love even more with the area. Shannon and Tim go above and beyond as hosts. They always make me feel safe and informed. The colors right now are magical. Listening to the leaves falling on my tent is indescribable! The grass is green and the stars were beautiful. Saw the most amazing shooting star. You can not ask for a better place to relax and for me it’s a reset. Truly one of my favorite place in the world!

Such a great private retreat with our 3 pups! It has everything needed for a glamping getaway and more! Very clean all around. All amenities were there and taken care of well. Peaceful and absolutely beautiful! Nice swimming hole that we wished we could have jumped in but the weather was a bit chilly! We also stopped by the winery and met Leith who gave us a great rundown of the history which was a pleasant little bonus! We will come back next summer for a few more day with friends to enjoy!

I liked that i was the only tent camper ....well until my last day there. There was a bathroom very close to my tent site and a shower that you don't have to pay for....that's a plus. The signal is bad put they give you a wifi code for the office and club house and they are just a few minutes walk from the tent sites. And the club house seems like a nice idea for people that come with kids, because they have a TV and different types of games in there. I came in beginning of October, so it got a little cold at night, but since I travel with a heater it wasn't bad at all. Oh, and there are deers galore ....so cute. I frequently heard the birds flapping there wings. And some mornings I would hear the rooster 🐓 from a little bit away and that would be my alarm clock ⏰️. Overall, if I would head this way again camping I'd probably revisit.....it was peaceful.

About
Spanning more than a million acres, Shasta-Trinity is the largest national forest in California, with a landscape that stretches from 1,000 feet to over 14,000 feet, and five designated wilderness areas. Explore three scenic byways, more than 450 miles of trails, including 154 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, or climb the snow-capped Mount Shasta. Hundreds of alpine lakes, and more than 6,000 miles of rivers and streams offer plenty of water-based activities, including boating, paddling, and fishing. The forest also offers a wide range of camping options for overnight stays, including developed and dispersed campgrounds, boat-in campgrounds, shoreline campgrounds, fire lookout stations, and historic cabins.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for families with kids and accessible campers: The Alpine View Campground offers accessible campsites, restrooms, and paved trails, as well as areas for kids.
- Best for RV campers: The Bushytail Campground offers electric and water hookups.
- Best for tent campers and water lovers: The tent-only and walk-in Stoney Point Campground is right on the shores of Trinity Lake.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- During peak summer season, plan to reserve a campsite as soon as you know your dates. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance for individual sites and 12 months for group sites for reservable campgrounds.
- If you don’t have a reservation, plan to arrive first thing in the morning to grab a site at a first-come, first-served campground.
- Be sure to check on seasonal opening and closing dates, which vary by campground.
When to go
May to October are the best times for camping in the forest. Summer weekends are particularly popular and most campgrounds fill up quickly. From fall to early spring, snow and ice may affect road access, especially at higher elevations. Some activities, including downhill skiing at Mount Shasta Ski Park, are snow dependent. Mushroom season runs in the spring and fall, while wildflowers can be seen from late January to early November, depending on the elevation.
Know before you go
- Campfire permits are required to have a campfire or stove at a dispersed site. The Trinity Alps and Mount Shasta wilderness areas require wilderness permits. A summit permit is also required to summit Mount Shasta.
- Permits are required to collect or cut forest products, including mushrooms, fuelwood, and Christmas trees.
- Be bear aware and store scented items outside your tent in a bear-proof container.
- Fishing licenses are required for anglers 16 and older.

Rush Creek Campground
The road to the campground would have been good for an adventure motorcycle with off-road tires, but not my street bike. It had just rained and the steep, dirt and loose gravel road was slick and muddy in spots. I made it to a day use site clearing and was able to turn around safely. The road continued, but was very uneven and rutted. Unsure what the campsites looked like as I did not continue further than halfway. Good luck, campers!

Every once in a while you need to live it up and glamp! Mary Smith is a wonderful campground and Lewiston Lake by far has one of the best views from this campground. There is a marina not far away to rent a boat. WE throughly enjoyed an unplugged week!

Extremely weird use of Hipcamp comments, but, question: On the wall inside the lookout, there's a framed photo of some flying vultures with quote written on it. It's sort of charmingly weird and janky, has the feel of an inside joke, and I meant to take a picture of it during my stay but I forgot (distracted by amazing views, presumably). We stayed in a yurt at Lakeshore East and would definitely return. Reserve online or by phone. The campground is mostly small tent spots but they had two yurts: site 20 has a twin/full bed bunk and a futon, and site 22 has a queen bed. Fire rings, and flush toilets in good condition. You can overlook the lake a few yards behind the campsite. Be aware that this campsite is across the street from train tracks and the freight train rumbles by several times day and night, and you’ll hear the freeway if you listen. However between trains I thought it was pretty peaceful. There is a small grocery store, laundromat, and local pub nearby. .

Wonderful Campground worth the drive in- no low clearance vehicles. 12$ pay station and corals for horses. There are approximately 7 different trailheads from this road which extends deep into the wilderness, ideal for horses lots of water. Note this is a pack it out campground- So plan to camp after you hike as bears are also known to break into cars with trash here, I took some other backpackers trash out with me since there were leaving for 4 nights to the lake 9mile hike. LEAVE NO TRACE!

Have camped here hundreds of times since the late 80's. This camp does NOT have half the stuff this page claims it does. It does have toilets and water. It does have hiking and fishing. You can NOT fish with bait here. It has to be artificials only, so basically lures and flies. There is also a slot limit. Best not to expect to include trout caught from the river as part of your meal plan.
Fly-fishing works well here if you have some skills at it. There's no boating, paddling, OHV, bike riding or horseback riding. No whitewater rafting, no cave, no hot springs, and beaches are primarily rocks. Gorgeous area though with good hiking. Trails can be a bit iffy though so take care.

We had a great time at Mary Smith Campground. We stayed in glamping site #3 and really liked it (though site #2 was our favorite). Some feedback on the campground:
- The glamping site bed is super comfortable. We fell asleep instantly and got woken up next day by the morning sun.
- The glamping sites are set up well, have enough space, each come with a fire pit, 2 plastic chairs, 2 wooden chairs, a full table + benches and a LED lantern.
- The bathrooms at are clean, flush toilets. The ranger is re-stocking toilet paper daily. Big plus!
- There are no showers at the campground. Good news is that you can simply take a swim in the lake :)

For all of you that know me ;; I have branch out to KOA;; this is in the Trinity Alps;;; just 70 mile from Redding up Hwy 299 then turn up north out of WeaverVille Calif. up Hwy 3. ;; This in one of many beautiful spots on trinity Lake ;; if you havn`t stay at a KOA you are in for a treat;; This park is only open about 4 to 5 month out of the year but it is worth the drive to stop in and start your camping Adventure;;; KOAs go all out for each and every camper for the best camping adventure you will ever get;; Clean Cabins, fishing, hiking, playground heated pool, or swim in the lake, kayaking, much more. Stop at a KOA you will not be sorry.

Trinity Lake is gorgeous and was completely worth our five hour drive. The lake was warmish in June and there are some mountain biking/hiking trails nearby. Be prepared for all sorts of weather when visiting as in started to rain on us one day and on another we had clear skies and the sun. When we camped we didn’t see our campground host and there was only two other campsites taken; you will be left alone here. Also make sure you pack everything you need because there aren’t any nearby stores unless you drive up to Eureka or don’t mind spending a lot of many at a small gas station further north.

My favorite place to camp. I grew up here every summer. Use to b so awesome with bingo, dances, and deer feed. Not the hopping place it once was but the new owners are nice and are putting their hearts into making it great. So beautiful and peaceful.

I really like Ackerman Campground because it is primitive and quiet. If you're looking for a clubhouse and bar, go somewhere else. This is nearly boondocking, except there are sites and tables and fire rings.

My husband and I had a WONDERFUL time here. Not only was the whole team super knowledgeable and friendly, their motivation is catching! We enjoyed helping restore campgrounds and cleaning the forest for future campers while being able to take in all the scenic beauty. We cant wait to go back to rest in the mineral springs and see the chickens!

Make sure you get there early to get a spot next to the water. We went in February and it was great to have the campsite pretty empty. I feel like in summer it won't be as nice because it will probably be crowded with motor boats.

Pets ARE allowed, but not recommended due to the large number of rattlesnakes and bears. There are fire rings, but fires are often prohibited anyway. Check when you get your fire permit.
The campsites are within a hundred yards of the river, and there are pit toilets but no drinking water. Pack out your trash.
The road in is a long, washed out dirt road, so don't try to drive this in anything less than an SUV or something with sturdy suspension.

Probably the most beautiful spot I've ever slept. You get a private view of Mt. Shasta to the west and Lassen to the south, with cool geomorphological features and lava fields speckled in front.
There are two single beds with mattresses inside. We brought sheets and sleeping bags, then added a sleeping pad on the ground. Lots of space for tucking and storing things so it doesn't get too cluttered. There's a wood-burning stove inside the lookout, but it was so warm we didn't need it.
The bathroom is clean and stocked with TP. No showers or potable water. There were a ton of bugs while we were there, so don't forget the bug spray.
We went on a 10-mile out-and-back run to Medicine Campground on Medicine Lake, which has awesome swimming!

Lake Shasta is beautiful.The weather was perfect about 86 in the day and not very cold at night. We were a bit close to out neighboring campers. But it was fine. I do really strongly recommend to bring bug spray!!!!.Theres a lot of mosquitos mostly at night. All the sites have a fire pit, and theres a trash can nearby. We were only here for 2 nights one whole day and spend a lot of our day at the lake. We rented a ski boat and jet ski on the lake,I do recommend reserving one, also theres a couple of convenience stores on the lake and a restaurant cafe on Holiday Harbor which is down the road of Bailey cove. if you rent a boat and feel adventurous find little backbone creek, go upstream, theres a beautiful natural waterslide.West of the lake

We stayed at the group campsite. The worst part: It's on a hill, and there were parasites sometimes noticeably swimming in the water... like most places in the wilderness. We swam a lot and had fun in the sun. Not to far from Trinity lake, if it is full. If it's not it can be a muddy mess.
