This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region.
We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. We have a Native Plant Center where we grow up to 50 species of rare native plants. Ask us for a tour.

The site has a 30 amp hook up (as well as a 50A hookup option or 20A outlet for any other appliances that may need to be plugged in). When you come down the driveway, you take a right at the first fork to drive into the large graveled parking lot, where you will find the designated parking spot against the North side of the barn.
There is (1) sani-can unit (toilet) that is serviced monthly available for use, and a sink for handwashing and an additional fresh water supply. The metal trash bin next to the sani-can is for your use - please do not use any other trash cans in or outside of the barn as these are for events only.
You will also find a wood firepit and chairs available for use right beside your site. Please bring your own wood to, or feel free to purchase wood through this listing. Also feel free to enjoy the covered seating area alongside the west side of the barn, overlooking the animals, gardens and expansive valley view!
We are also situated less than a 10-minute drive away from an easily accessible dump station in Port Ludlow, on the way to the Hood Canal Bridge.
Please understand that we are a working farm that hosts businesses and other visitors. You will most likely see us and perhaps other guests during your stay! Our home is further down the driveway (to the south of the barn) and we have land mates and an Airbnb unit attached to our house. You will likely hear the sounds of farm projects, animals and people at times. We also live off the busy Beaver Valley road, making us an ideal location for access to the greater Peninsula, but also please know that you may notice road noise at times during your stay with us. We are not in a remote area that is completely silent - we are a bustling farm in a happening place. If you are seeking somewhere very remote without a lot of noise, projects or people coming and going, our site is sadly not for you. This is just the reality of our situation and we always want to make sure our guests know what to expect. That said, this also makes for an exciting, immersive experience if you're looking to connect with the bustling farming and food culture in our region! Great spot on the middle of the island. Quiet and peaceful. No power but clean and dry. Fire pit offered a great spot for an evening campfire.
Very clean, cots for sleeping. Bring headlamps. Running water, shower and toilet clean and about 60 - 80 yds from the cabin. Great host and spot!

Courtney’s land is a rustic, peaceful oasis conveniently located near town yet feels tucked away in the middle of nature. We had our boat hauled out at Jensens on San Juan to do some routine bottom paint and maintenance. It was wonderful to have an affordable accommodation to camp at with our pup while we were on this island. Courtney was helpful and kind allowing us to extend our stay as our job took longer than anticipated. We will definitely stay here again the next time we haul our boat out or camp on San Juan. Thank you Courtney for sharing this space with us.

We had an amazing stay at Squatch Glen and can’t recommend it enough. Our host Cheryl, made us feel genuinely welcomed. She’s friendly, attentive, and clearly takes pride in the space she’s created.
The campsites are clean, level, and thoughtfully laid out. While you can see neighboring sites, they’re spaced far enough apart to maintain a sense of privacy, which we really appreciated.
Amenities here are top-notch for a rustic getaway. Each site comes with a table and clean drinking water, which was super convenient. The portapotty was impressively clean, and the shower stalls had hot water and were well-maintained, definitely a step above typical campground standards.
Overall, Squatch Glen strikes a great balance between comfort and nature. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or just dipping your toes into the outdoors, this spot is worth checking out.
We’ll definitely be back!

Such a serene and quiet place to camp. Toilet was spotless and it was great to have a hot shower. Peaceful, quiet and clean. Would love to stay here again if in Northern Washington!.

1 night at Pacific Rim Institute
Super fun to sleep in a pheasant coop! We talked all night by candle light when we were not outside looking at the stars. They are restoring a prairie, the trails would have been interesting but we had no time. Bathroom was great.

2 nights at Pacific Rim Institute
This spot is unique—sleeping in a converted pheasant brooding house and being able to explore the acreage was cool. It’s also nice to feel connected in some way to the mission of Pacific Rim Institute.
Three slight drawbacks. 1) Practically no shade. There’s one tree at the head of the brooding house row. Other than that, you chase the rotating shadow of the shack or spend a few hours in the forest. Maybe use the afternoon to visit Fort Ebey or Rhododendron Park (both close). Around here, no shade is usually no biggie. But when I was there in August with direct afternoon sun on the south side, it was tough. 2) The shower room was not cleaned and was unusable.

Camping on Sid's land was lovely! Sid was very kind. The views were gorgeous and he was boarding some very sweet cows. We had a peaceful night's sleep after exploring Olympic!

What a fantastic place to reconnect with nature. Walking the paths through the fields and forest at sunrise and sunset was absolutely everything. The little hut was charming and access to simple amenities was great. Fair warning, Monday through Thursday be prepared for the appalling screams of war machines overhead practically non-stop but weekends are a delight (host did provide a heads up so went into it knowing that was a possibility) will definitely visit for a weekend again!
