A Few “Concerns” to Clear Up
• “This isn’t off-grid.” If your idea of off-grid is 100 miles from civilization and reachable only by carrier pigeon, then sure — we’re not that. But there’s no power, no running water, no gas line, and nothing tied into municipal infrastructure. We’re powered by nature, not a utility bill. So yes, we’re off-grid — just not your wool-socks-and-Birkenstocks version of it. (Though, for the record, we wear Birkenstocks too.)
• “We were seen in towels.” Hmmm… which is why we gently suggest skipping the towel parades through camp. Our enclosed shower stalls are there for a reason: shower, dry off, then get dressed before rejoining the great outdoors.
• “It was in somebody’s backyard.” Sorry — our two acres aren’t tucked away in the middle of a federally protected reserve in the middle of nowhere. But our closest neighbor is nearly 300 feet away, and we happen to think riverside camping with a little civilization nearby is a pretty great trade-off.

Wolftrap Farm was owned by James & Dolley Madison during their time, and they called it Black Meadow. Their home, Montpelier, is just across the mountains you see from the campsite. It passed through the hands of various local farmers during the 19th & 20th centuries, and for many years was a dairy farm. It became primarily a horse farm in the 1970's, when it was owned by the German Von Wulffen family.The Cuthrell family from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area acquired the farm in 2003 and converted it to a resort farm, featuring upscale vacation homes. On the north side of the property, you’ll find our thriving fruit orchard with five varieties of apple trees, three types of peaches, three plum trees, two cherries, three pears, three persimmons, two pomegranate bushes, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, haskaps, Aronia berries, and even young chestnut and hazelnut trees.

The yurt at fairy glen is lovely! Though it rained on our stay, we still loved it and felt cozy, especially with the rain sound. The birds were amazing as our alarm clock in the morning. The property is so nice and we got their pretty black cat as our tour guide! We will definitely come back! 😌

We had an excellent experience staying in the canvas tent at The Garden Patch. The space is wonderfully secluded, tucked away in the beautiful Shenandoah mountains, and the host gave me all of the guidance to get there safely and set up quickly. The tent itself was perfectly set up—the furnishings were cozy, featuring a large bed with comfortable flannel sheets and a beautiful wood stove, which went a long way in keeping us warm during the colder weather. I would love to come back in better weather to truly enjoy the outdoor space.
I do have a helpful note for future visitors: the road leading to The Garden Patch is rocky and unpaved. If you are driving a vehicle like a loaded-down minivan, please take this into consideration.
Lastly, we were sweetly greeted by a gorgeous shepherd pup both before settling in and when we were leaving in the morning. He was quite friendly, though I did have to bribe him with a treat so he wouldn't get stuck behind the gate as we drove off! Overall, a truly memorable and highly recommended stay.

I made it to the site right as a big storm was rolling through, barely threw my bags and dog into the tent before the skies opened up. Heavy rain on the tent was pretty loud, but I stayed dry and cozy and since my campfire plans were dashed, was so grateful to have the wood stove inside to still get some crackling wood and warm glow - and also to heat up my apple cider! Michael was quick and responsive to messages, his directions were clear, and I very much enjoyed my quick stay in the spacious and comfortable tent!

Loved spending a glamping weekend at Sue’s! It’s nestled in the middle of many hiking trails, the Woodstock tower, and wineries. The yurt itself is incredibly comfortable, and the A/C unit is a dream. Sue met us at arrival and was super friendly and walked us through all the supplies they had available to make the camping weekend perfect.

This was such a diamond in the rough! The bed was very comfortable and even though it was cold when we stayed here, we stayed warm in the tent. Michael had firewood available for purchase if we wanted to use the wood stove as well. The property was very nice, it had a nice outhouse too! Michael had a fire pit with some precut wood for us to burn so we enjoyed sitting around the fire in the evening. We received very detailed instructions before we arrived which made it easy to find out where to go and it was very peaceful. My husband and I are both pretty introverted so we enjoyed that we had the place to ourselves and checked ourselves in! Thank you again for the wonderful stay, 5/5 stars!!

The gravel road through the neighborhood is 2WD friendly. The property was super easy to find, especially with the owner’s great communication. Unfortunately it was a rainy night and we couldn’t enjoy the prepped fire pit, but maybe we will just come back one day! Area was nice and quiet. We did enjoy the freshly built outhouse and the outdoor sink. The tent was most certainly waterproof and very roomy. The queen bed was freshly made up and provided a comfortable night’s sleep. The perfect place to rest after a long drive, or spend the weekend with the kids. Several swings, and things to play on for them. Plenty of food options within 5-10 minutes drive too.

This was an excellent stay. I stayed here for a beautiful weekend with my girlfriend (who became my fiance on this trip!) and our dog. Highly recommend this for your fun weekend getaway. The site was private and spacious, next to an easily accessible creek, and had plenty of room for the doggo to run around. The hosts were extremely friendly and checked in on us at the start of our stay in case we needed anything. The yurt was very comfortable and had no issues withstanding a night of rain. Stay here for your next weekend getaway, plenty of trails/hiking are a very short drive away!

Great site, quiet and spacious, beautiful views of the mountains. Clean restroom/shower facilities conveniently located near tent. Tent setup was very comfortable with a bed, a/c, grill, table. Quiet, and loved having the horses nearby. Glad that there was a fridge to keep perishables, and other supplies like plates, etc. Ladies room was awesome.
