We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed.
You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well.
We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest.
Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

It passed through the hands of various local farmers during the 19th & 20th centuries, and for many years was a dairy farm. It became primarily a horse farm in the 1970's, when it was owned by the German Von Wulffen family.The Cuthrell family from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area acquired the farm in 2003 and converted it to a resort farm, featuring upscale vacation homes. What do you get when you cross a former 60 Minutes producer with a defense finance executive? Yeah, we're not sure either. But here we are, having envisioned leaving television and the corporate slog behind to build a tiny cabin lodging business in the woods.
What we lack in sanity, we make up for in absolute love of the outdoors and the majestic beauty of Highland County, Virginia. The people, the Allegheny Mountains, the star-filled sky, the rushing rivers, the farm-to-table food, the cider, the local honey, and the maple syrup...all of it drew us in, and we made this place our home.
We didn't just want to build a business...we wanted to create a life around it. So, naturally, we bought 135 acres surrounded by National Forest, packed up our old life, our dogs, our adventure motorcycles, and Jeff's way-too-many backpacks, and jumped on the crazy train that would consume our lives for the next year as we gathered the people and resources to bring Virginia Backcountry Cabins to life.
We want to tell stories by the campfire. We want to fly fish, hike, and climb. We want to cold plunge in our spring-fed creek. We want to let the day melt away in a wood-fired sauna.

Cozy Bear sits right by the large noisy, trout stocked creek, with a private hot tub between the creek and the cabin, and less than five miles from Hillsville, which has a grocery store, local shops, a gym, dining, and nearby hiking. There is a shared bathhouse with a conventional toilet and an outside shower, shared with tent guests occasionally. Inside Cozy Bear, there is a queen mattress up in the loft, and a sleeper sofa downstairs. The kitchen has a sink, coffee maker and on the deck is a blackstone griddle, a propane firepit and a wood burning firepit is by the creek. Cozy Bear has a composting toilet and a shower in the bathroom, an ac window unit and a beautiful propane fireplace. If the temps get extreme outside, the waterlines do freeze. I will gladly do a full refund or change your dates if the forecast is well below freezing, although this cabin is cozy and warm inside.

Our cozy cabin is thoughtfully designed to provide all the comforts of home. It features warm décor, with new furnishings and a well-equipped kitchen for your cooking needs.
Main floor sleeping arrangements are a bedroom with new memory foam queen bed, and a queen sleeper sofa in the living room. Up the loft steps, a twin bed is located in the "Eagles landing", with a new memory foam double bed in the bedroom. Please be aware that the stairs are quite steep and were not designed with railing. We recommend exercising caution when using them, especially for guests with mobility concerns, young children, or those who may be less sure-footed. Your safety and comfort are important to us, so please take care when choosing your sleeping arrangements.
There is one bathroom with a shower downstairs, located off the kitchen. A small washer dryer is also available. Please note, these can accommodate only small loads of laundry. You'll find bath towels and smaller towels specifically for drying off after a relaxing soak in the hot tub. We've stocked quality shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, as well as some basic toiletries in case a guest forgets to bring an item.
In the living room, the 55" TV streams Netflix, Hulu or any app on the Roku TV (you will need your own log in). The internet is provided by Starlink and is high speed! The queen bedroom also has a Roku TV, and a selection of board games, cards, and some children's activities are available below the TV.
Outdoor Amenities:
Take a relaxing soak in the hot tub while watching the local wildlife in the meadow. Enjoy our spacious fire pit area, complete with Adirondack chairs with a grill grate—perfect for evening s'mores or grilling under the stars. Lounge in the double hammock, or challenge your friends to a friendly game of cornhole. We also provide extra camp chairs that you may take down to the creek. When exploring the field and creek area please look at boundary map in our pictures for property lines to respect our neighbors. Deer, turkey, rabbits and hawks are spotted daily, and our neighbors report occasional bear sightings.
Firewood:
For your convenience, we provide 6-8 pieces of firewood for your use during your stay. If you require additional firewood, we kindly ask that you bring your own or contact us. We offer the option to use more firewood for a small donation. Just let us know, and we'll be happy to accommodate your needs.

Genuinely beautiful stay between nice views and a well appointed and clean tent. All facilities were easy to find (even with our after-dark arrival) and access and were quite clean. The only downside was a slightly intrusive barn cat that kept following me around and begging at tent door.
That said, we would definitely come back to stay again and for longer! Thank you to the hosts.

I reserved this wellness retreat for my husband for our wedding anniversary/Father’s Day/baby minimoon. It was very relaxing to be out in nature with some peace and quiet away from our busy schedules. Trevor, the host was extremely kind and checked in on us vie email throughout our stay. We really enjoyed the ambience and visual vibes from the wellness cabin 1. The first floor of the unit was very comfortable with AC. Due to a very high heat index, on the first night, sleeping on the top bunk was very hot. We did have a small fan, but it did not provide a lot of relief; on the second night we ended up sleeping downstairs on an air mattress that we brought from home. It made our sleeping situation very comfortable. Also, it allowed me to not have to go up and down an unstable narrow ladder to get to the top of the loft while pregnant, which was a bit scary. All in all, we enjoyed the pizza oven as well as a wonderful cold plunge to cool down from the heat. Since it already felt like a sauna outside, we decided to skip the sauna. I would highly recommend this wellness retreat in cabin 1. Looking forward to exploring the other cabins on Trevor‘s property!

1 night at Magical Riverside Yurt w/hot tub
If you’re looking for a place that feels like you’ve stepped into another world, this is it. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we had been transported to a truly unique and peaceful retreat where it was easy to disconnect from everyday life and simply enjoy the surroundings.
Jodee was an exceptional host, and all of the friendly animals, made the experience even more memorable and added such a warm, personal touch that you just don’t find everywhere.
The yurt itself was incredibly well equipped. Everything we could have needed was already there, and you could tell a great deal of thought and care had gone into every detail. We never found ourselves wishing for anything.
Between the amazing location, the one-of-a-kind atmosphere, and the outstanding hospitality, this was one of the most enjoyable places we’ve stayed. We left already talking about coming back, and I have no doubt we’ll be returning. Highly recommended!

1 night at The Cozy Bear on the creek/ hot tub
Creekside campground is an absolute gem! We started our stay tent camping right by the beautiful, rushing creek, which provided the most relaxing background noise at night. Halfway through our trip, we moved into one of their small, off-grid cabins, and it was the perfect cozy upgrade while still keeping that authentic nature connection. Each site comes with a great fire pit for evening campfires.
Our camp host, JoDee, was extremely helpful and made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived. The entire property is peaceful, and the clean bathrooms were a major plus.
Our dogs were also in absolute heaven here. The property features massive, wide-open areas where they could run, play, and burn off energy safely. We will definitely be back!

We absolutely loved our time in Darlene's camper. The property is beautiful with trails that lead to the creek. The trailer is older but it was perfect for us. We look forward to returning when we can spend more time there.

Trevor greeted us friendly and inviting great directions. The dome was spacious, clean neat, very modern and had cool tech things. The whole atmosphere was very relaxing. This site was amazing! I spent a quiet weekend here with my partner and we loved all aspects of it. The cabin is somehow both small and spacious, and it had all the amenities we would have wanted. Having a mini fridge was a game changer for food prep, and Trevor was incredibly responsive and welcoming with any questions. We loved walking on the trails around the house and bird watching on the quiet benches around the trail. It does take a little but of climbing to get into the double bed, but once you’re up there it’s like a cozy little hideout :).

We really enjoyed our family time spent at the yurt. The trip provided memories for us to look back on, something that we plan to continue to do each season of life as we raise our son. The views are amazing. The peacefulness of the surroundings was exactly what we needed. Dog friendly was a high plus! Our Sophie girl loved it. This yurt had it all! It made our time so much more enjoyable to not have to worry about a thing. We will definitely be returning.

Weekend Trip to Wellness Cabins (3 to choose from)
Staying at Trevor’s Geo Dome was an incredible experience! We came all the down from Baltimore for this getaway to celebrate our anniversary here and it did not disappoint. It was awesome. The sauna, hot tub, fire pit, and beautiful views of the meadow made it feel like our own little oasis. So much so that my partner popped the question! I could not think of a more special place to get engaged. I will remember this experience for a lifetime.

Our campsite was secluded, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Mark was very accommodating and even brought a four wheeler pulling a cart to help us with our heavy stuff. The copper tub is out of this world. You have to try it. It was nice having everything we needed for cooking. Having a toilet on site was a nice luxury. I would definitely recommend this place. It was a perfect weekend getaway and our dogs enjoyed themselves as well.

This experience was exactly as described online! Scott and crew were tremendously helpful and communicative. Everything was clean and ready for us when we arrived. It ended up being a total rain out when we were there but there was a TV and fun games for the entire family to enjoy. Our family of four plus our pup had a lovely time and would highly recommend this stay!
