Welcome to our small Farm, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison County, Virginia. We do not allow RVs or trailers on our main farm due to our narrow mountain driveway. Wisteria Camp has a private driveway, it can accommodate small RV/Trailers. Camper vans are welcome at the main farm!
Our farm store includes our Animal Welfare Approved products such as Eggs, Chicken, Beef, Pork, Lamb and Dairy, as well as produce, jams, coffee and other items from our local community. We offer camping essentials, local art, bike rentals, farm experiences and tours.
The property has miles of trails along mountain spring-fed streams, a small pond and access to three private acres on the Robinson River, a stocked Trout stream, just 2 miles down the road. Our property is centrally located to White Oak Canyon (20 minutes) and Old Rag Mountain (10 minutes) trailheads in the Shenandoah National Park as well as many vineyards and breweries.

Wolftrap Farm was owned by James & Dolley Madison during their time, and they called it Black Meadow. Their home, Montpelier, is just across the mountains you see from the campsite. It passed through the hands of various local farmers during the 19th & 20th centuries, and for many years was a dairy farm. It became primarily a horse farm in the 1970's, when it was owned by the German Von Wulffen family.The Cuthrell family from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area acquired the farm in 2003 and converted it to a resort farm, featuring upscale vacation homes. My husband and I first lived on this property shortly after marrying 17 yrs ago, we moved to AK and back in 2013 and have been building our homestead from the ground up ever since. We love this mountain and consider our home a Beautiful Magical Place! We daily connect with the glorious natural elements surrounding us and give thanks constantly. We’ve learned a lot over the years about living with The Land and want to share this space with like-minded others. We tend to “rise with the Sun, and sleep when it’s done”, so don’t be surprised if you see David or myself, or our kids playing/working on site. If you like to chat, we’re usually available, if you like your privacy, we respect that too. There are a handful of neighbors, and sometimes cars travel up or down the road, but generally this is a quiet, peaceful area. Our two old time scotch collies keep most wildlife away, but once in a while you get a glimpse of turkey, or hawks, rabbits, etc…. Hiking and exploring the woods is welcome, but don’t stray to the neighbors
We recently acquired a rare chicken breed, Scots Dumpies, and are trying to increase the flock, so there may be a chance to see baby chicks. The Stars do their thing on clear nights and are an amazing sight with the near zero light pollution. We love to view the stars and Moon in all her phases.
We try to keep your need to bring much to a minimum, so we provide plenty of blankets and pillows ( or sleeping bag if desired), dishes and some cookware for over-the-fire meals, towels and wash cloths if a rain barrel “cat bath” is in order :), hand soap and toilet paper too!
Life is in constant fluctuation up here at our mountain home, which is how we like it! Camp out with us and see why!

We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed.

A Few “Concerns” to Clear Up
• “This isn’t off-grid.” If your idea of off-grid is 100 miles from civilization and reachable only by carrier pigeon, then sure — we’re not that. But there’s no power, no running water, no gas line, and nothing tied into municipal infrastructure. We’re powered by nature, not a utility bill. So yes, we’re off-grid — just not your wool-socks-and-Birkenstocks version of it. (Though, for the record, we wear Birkenstocks too.)
• “We were seen in towels.” Hmmm… which is why we gently suggest skipping the towel parades through camp. Our enclosed shower stalls are there for a reason: shower, dry off, then get dressed before rejoining the great outdoors.
• “It was in somebody’s backyard.” Sorry — our two acres aren’t tucked away in the middle of a federally protected reserve in the middle of nowhere. But our closest neighbor is nearly 300 feet away, and we happen to think riverside camping with a little civilization nearby is a pretty great trade-off.

If those realities feel unacceptable, we wish you luck finding a soundproof, neighbor-free, bird-mute utopia. But if you’re after a laid-back, laughter-filled, and unapologetically outdoor getaway on the banks of the South River — welcome. You’ve found it.

EVERYTHING was exactly as we could have hoped for - bucolic, private, comfortable, clean, beautiful, perfect location (5 minutes from historic downtown Gordonsville).

We loved our stay! Amazing view and plenty of space to explore. We did both the yurt and the tent camping and our experience was great. The train did pass by at night and was a little loud but it didn’t bother us—the kids actually thought it was cool.

It was lovely - secluded in the perfect way! Only caveat is you'll want to bring a good AWD type vehicle with some decent undercarriage clearance - my Corolla never would've done well going up.

Great site! It was amazing to sleep in an actual bed rather than the ground! Also hot water for a shower was amazing! The hosts were also amazing and brought us a heater when the temp was going to drop over night making us much more comfortable! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a large space with more comforts than usual camping!

Awesome view! Really enjoy staying next to the beautiful river. Well maintained camping ground and glamping tents. Shower house is a really big plus!
Please note:
1. Bring extra blankets if the temperature is low
2. There’s a train rack at the other side of the river. Expected a train to drive by every 2-3 hrs

Weekend Trip to Historic Hobby Farm
I recently spent a lovely weekend at Laura’s Farm. Overall, the place is wonderful and great for kids. Laura was also very attentive and a wonderful host. My little one had so much fun and we can’t wait until we go back again.

2 nights at Watercress Inn at Landon Farm
We stayed in the studio apartment and it was perfect. We’re visiting for a fishing trip and debated camping and this was too nice to pass up. Close to all the rivers that we needed to have access to Jennifer also provided us directions map information and any assistance we needed.
We will definitely be back to visit!
