This land is the home to Brad and Sarah, cats, gardens and a variety of wildlife. It is here that we run Roots School, a wilderness earth skills school, instructing adults and youth alike. The land has over a half a mile of river frontage and several streams, a beautiful varied forest, rambling topography, and plenty of wildlife. Many lessons in tracking may be found as whitetails, moose, black bear, fishers, bobcats, porcupine, coyotes, foxes, mink, ermine, snowshoe hare, wild turkey, and ruffled grouse, are seen and tracked. Often times we are also lucky enough to catch a hawk circling the pasture and to hear the barred owls calls in the darkness of night. The diversity of plants, trees, and animals make this an ideal place to study and grow, or simply hang out in and experience.

Our tent and yurt sites are located on 5 acres of private woods and are 4 acres apart to allow for maximum privacy for our guests! Parking for both sites are shared. The tent is 50 yards up a rustic wooded path through the woods and the yurt is an 800 yard (10 minute) uphill walk from the parking area. Both sites are adjacent to our local network of hiking/biking trails that connect to the summit of Mount Agassiz, which offers stunning views of Franconia Notch. Additionally, within a half hour drive, you have access to some of the best hiking in the North East. We are happy to provide recommendations! The surrounding towns are home to three different breweries, numerous restaurants serving up delicious food and quaint main streets. Through the generous permission of surrounding landowners and the stewardship of the Bethlehem Trails Association, guests can access this trail network to enjoy the views from the summit of Mount Agassiz for top notch single-track mountain biking. We live one town over and are just a phone call away. If you walk the trails, you may encounter a friendly neighbor's dog but all our guests enjoy the privacy and solitude the mountain provides. Metta Earth Institute (MEI) is a non-profit educational retreat center in Lincoln, Vermont. With 158 beautiful acres, we are nestled in a bowl of mountains with stunning mountain views in all directions. Meadows, pastureland, and horticultural fields are interspersed with hardwood and evergreen forest, old orchards, stonewalls, seasonal streams, and an enormous variety of wildlife habitat. Walking and hiking places abound, and a magnificent, pure river with clear pools and waterfalls is just a few minutes’ walk down the road. MEI is based on a small-scale diversified, organic, and biodynamically oriented farm with an acre-sized retreat garden and other herb and flower gardens, and 2 food producing greenhouses. We practice regenerative agriculture, carbon farming, and many other environmentally sustainable practices. Main House Front Porch The front porch of the main house has continued to be a wonderful gathering place with outstanding sunset views and surrounding terraced gardens with blossoms and berries that attract hummingbirds and bees. We serve meals from the adjoining big kitchen, and these can be enjoyed on the porch or taken on trays to the nearby Plum Grove, other outdoor settings. The porch is a great place to meet with others or enjoy a place to sit and read. There is also a good internet connection on the porch and a place to charge devices. Metta Earth has many structures and spaces to support individuals and groups. The main house has a newly renovated, lovely commercial kitchen space, a dining area, a large, covered porch, a handicapped access bathroom, a yoga/program room, and selected rooms and suites for sleeping. We also have an outdoor pavilion for yoga and other gatherings, and a heritage barn with a barn loft. Please do keep in mind that Metta Earth is a farm based, country retreat center, rustic, yet clean, cared for, and colorful. Outdoor Pavilion We have a 20’ x 24’ outdoor, open structure for groups made from tree poles and covered with a golden colored canvas tarp. The ground is grassy and well maintained. This space can comfortably support 10-15 yoga mats or seating options in a big circle. Heritage Barn Loft Of all the structures and spaces at Metta Earth, the barn loft is one of our most favorite rooms. On the second floor of the heritage barn, this space is often used for drying herbs for teas. It can also be used for gatherings of about 10 or so people. We like to roll out a rug on the wooden, pine floor or use our sheepskins and handmade wool meditation rugs for comfortable sitting. There are two tall windows looking out over the south pasture that cast light on the wooden beams of the barn. This space shines with the soul and warmth of Earth. Bring a bathing suit and gear for swims in the beautiful nearby New Haven River. You are welcome to walk anywhere on Metta Earth land. Or you may want to walk on the surrounding dirt roads, all with very minimal cars and great mountain views or along the river. We can give further directions and information about the region when you are here. Our stays range from basic tent sites to Yurts and Canvas Tents. We have something for everyone. We have four yurts nestled on a knoll among maples, beeches, balsam, and other trees. They each are positioned for a sense of privacy from the others and have little paths connecting them. They all are well loved and humble, beautiful, light filled circular spaces with a round dome skylight, lattice siding, windows with screens for summer use and in winter extra insulation provided by window quilts. Each yurt has a wood stove for colder weather. The yurts are furnished simply with various configurations of single and double beds, tables, chairs, shelving, and sheepskins or other floor rugs. At night a few of the paths are lit with solar lamps, so it is wise to bring a flashlight/headlamp as well. Beeswax candles provide inside night lighting. Some of the yurts have string, solar lights around the inside of the yurt walls. We have 5 bell tents that are lovely, roundish shaped tents with a peak. Four of them are smaller, one-person tents, and one is larger for a couple or 2 people. We usually provide a mattress and pillow with organic bedding and a sheepskin rug, and a simple storage crate/table. It’s a good idea to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially in the potentially colder shoulder seasons in May and in September. If you have a tent, insulated ground mat, and sleeping gear, we have many inspiring sites in the surrounding forest glades, meadows, and fields. Those who choose to camp have access to outdoor composting toilets, a hot water outside faucet for bucket bathing, and outdoor shower available in the warmer seasons. Camping requires a certain hardiness and adequate gear. Weather during the growing season (May – October) in the mountains of Vermont is unpredictable. Temperatures range from freezing temperatures at night in the spring and fall to gloriously warm days and even hot days.

Then another friend gave us 3 girls, Maybe, Maggie and Ginger. Ginger was the mom, and they gave us 2 babies the first year. Sesame and Manolito, since then, we have been growing and growing, having now, 25 goats, milking 10 mothers, by hand.With all the fun, that is involve with a farm, we have been making cheese in our kitchen and building a barn. It is time to get the license, for cheese making, and here is when we need your help.We need 20.000 to finish building the barn, with a kitchen, a bathroom, an industrial pasteuriser, a septic system, and much more. We are artisan cheese producers. We are farming 48 acres mostly wooded both sides of Lincoln Brook, on Lincoln Gap rd. We are reclaiming some meadows. We have 26 goats, 20 chickens. Milking now 10 mothers by hand, making cheese in small batches fresh, every day. We make 7 types of cheeses:Chevre, mozzarella, feta, queso blanco, apple wood smoked queso blanco, type of Manchego, and a ripened cheese.Our goal is to preserve and protect the land while using organic principles to produce products for local consumption and enjoyment. Our Chèvre is a fresh, smooth creamy goats spread, with a little bit of tang with hints of berry bushes and clover. Great for appetizers, to mix with herbs, spread on toast with butter, to add to scramble eggs and much more!Our queso blanco is spanish for white cheese, latin america specialty. This cheese is a firm cheese, with a fresh mildly sweet flavor. Great for cooking! Does not melt while fried or grilled! Take on the flavor of the food and spices in a recipe!Our Apple wood smoked queso blanco is spanish for white cheese and is marinated in olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt. Great for cooking, for appetizers and for salads.Our Feta is strongly flavored salted cheese, originated in Greece. Often crumbled in little pieces on salads or tacos.Our goat Mozzarella is a firm style cheese with with a slight tang. Good on pizzas, flat bread or marinated with basil and tomatoes.Thanks for supporting local farmers.Stop by for a mate, and pet the goats, milk them, feed them and share the love for nature.

A microwave, electric kettle, induction burner, french press, and small fridge/freezer make it easy to prep a meal. Potable drinking water, fair-trade coffee and tea provided. Guests use a beautiful composting toilet just steps from the yurt, our outdoor shower, or indoor shower in colder months. A pellet stove and backup propane heater make the space cozy in any season. East Montpelier is home to nearly 15 miles of walking trails through rolling farmland and forest. Camel's Hump, Mount Hunger and Mt. Mansfield are all within a half 45 minute drive. The local parks department maintains lovely ski trails with panoramic views, and nearby ponds offer wonderful spots for swimming and boating. If you love life on two wheels, treat yourself to the miles of dirt roads and nearby mountain biking trails. I'm an avid outdoorswoman and will happily point you and your adventurous spirit to the best spots in the area! In addition to being close to several state parks (Little River, Groton, Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield), East Montpelier hosts a dozen miles of walking trails through woods and fields. Montpelier maintains miles of trails behind the state capitol, along the North Branch River and in fields and forests just minutes away.

Weekend Trip to Private 4 Season Yurt Close to Town
My husband and I spent our 1 year anniversary here and the space just made our experience all the more special! Sharon’s husband (Mark, we believe?) saw us as we parked our car and gave us a tour, making sure all of our questions were answered and that we were comfortable w/ using the amenities. The yurt was phenomenal - rustic but comfortable, very spacious and clean. Comfortable bed and pillows with plenty of blankets on the side. The wood stove was easy to use and we were welcome to get more wood in the back. Outhouse was close by. Downtown was <10min drive away - we found our new favorite bakery, Bohemian Bakery! Our hosts gave us plenty of helpful suggestions for our stay. We hope to come back in the summer!

Our property is nestled in the foothills of the Mad River Valley, close to the headwaters of the river. The property is composed of wetlands, agricultural meadows, old apple trees, and hardwood forest with 700 feet of elevation. We are 30 minutes from the Burlington International Airport, and the closest Amtrak train station in Rutland is an hour drive. It is best to arrive before sunset.
