1. Fuel up in Alpine or Study Butte, depending on which direction you are traveling from.
-From Alpine: take HWY 118 South out of Alpine approximately 62 miles until you come to the only left turn lane. Turn left on Terlingua Ranch Road. You will see the large white Terlingua Ranch Lodge sign.
-From Study Butte: take Hwy 118 North 16 miles from the ALON gas station, turn right at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge sign.
2. Follow Terlingua Ranch Road approximately 16 miles. The first 13 miles are asphalt. There is not a center stripe, please stay on your side of the road. THE LAST THREE MILES ARE ON A MAINTAINED DIRT AND GRAVEL ROAD. It can be wash-boarded in areas. Please drive slowly and observe speed limits to help protect our roads
We are proud to be a part of The Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve. All guests are requested to keep their site as dark as possible between 10pm and 6am.
Fire Ban: Due to extreme drought, only gas grills and propane burners are allowed. NO charcoal or wood fires.

While we are adjacent to Big Bend National Park, it is approximately 36 miles to the Maverick Junction entrance of Big Bend National Park and an additional 22 miles to Panther Junction Headquarters and Visitors Center.
We are about 32 miles to Study Butte and about 37 miles to Terlingua Ghost Town area.
Terlingua Ranch is 192,000 acres of desert and mountains between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park in far SW Texas. Our campsites are in the area of the Terlingua Ranch Lodge, which features a swimming pool, cafe, laundry, bathhouse, disc golf course, access to hiking trails, and other amenities. Terlingua Ranch is the perfect venue for your basecamp to Big Bend adventures, family reunions, and myriad other activities in the area.

Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!
Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The Tierra del Sol Basecamp is an open desert camping area located within Terlingua Ranch, 3 miles off of Hwy 118, 19 miles north of Study Butte and 22 miles to the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This region of far west Texas is well known for its remote ruggedness and beauty rapidly becoming the go-to place for those wanting to get away from it all, without having to spend a fortune to do it. It’s one of the last frontiers of North America and One of the only two National Parks in Texas. The Basecamp will reside on the 40 acre property. In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance.
As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. This is "The Field Lab", owned by the well know sustainable engineer John Wells. If you'd like to pay him a visit, please contact him in advance.

We needed a quick spot last minute and this was perfect! Very quiet. Remote, but also not far from i10. Full hookup, so we could charge overnight. Easy to find if you follow the given instructions. AND we could see the Milky Way! Very little light pollution! Stopped at night, camped, and left before it was light, so I don't know how the place is in the light. But at night it was great.

The booking process for the campsite was fast and easy. We needed a place to rest before continuing our trip to San Antonio, and James made everything simple with great communication. He provided all the information we needed before we arrived.
The location was peaceful, with a quiet neighborhood and excellent stargazing at night. The bathrooms were easy to find when needed, and they were very clean.
We also drove about 20 minutes to the town of Iraan to grab some pizza, which was a nice bonus. Overall, this was a great stop, and would recommend this site.

Quiet, far enough from ghost town revelry to be quite peaceful. Big stars of course, beautiful views. My only issue is - we could not find the place. Host was unresponsive. I lived in Terlingua for quite some time and have rarely been that lost. But, maybe it is a good thing. I think so. But when we got to the site, no markings on spots. More confusion for 2 exhausted folks. Also, no coffee! And no bar on memorial day weekend? The second one maybe good, because more quiet. But no coffee? Deal breaker. Still, we truly enjoyed it and are grateful to our hosts. Beautiful place and we would recommend and return.

Tremendous place to camp and stay a while! I’ve camped for years and have never enjoyed a quiet campsite that had delicious meals just a stroll from my camper door. What a convenience. And on occasion they have Karaoke. Fun stuff. They have a robust menu board that includes breakfast and dinner/supper. Worried about dessert? They have you covered.
Need a cabin? They have those. Need a shower? They have those for popup and tent campers.

Perfect place for an overnight stay where there aren't other options in an RV. The road names can throw you so watch directions & map. The site description was accurate so we knew what to expect & were satisfied with out stay & all communication.

This is a very nice and safe place to stay. Nothing to do in town but if you are on the road and need a place to stop and rest this is a safe comfortable place to be. Very quiet with no light noise just you and the stars. This is our second time staying here and our go to on the road as we cross the country. We highly recommend it.

It is basically a dirt field with a rustic fire pit and 30/50 amps plus hoses for water. The price was right and the area is very remote so we were thrilled to find Sheffield Camp. The sky was lit with a full moon with no light pollution. We felt very safe and the sheriff drove by a few times. We didn’t see another soul and no other traffic. Thank you!

Loved the place a lot! It had such a welcoming atmosphere and it’s a very well taken care of park. Owner Makes sure that your stay is the best one possible and the restaurant on site has very reasonable prices on food so if your ever hungry I would recommend giving them a try. The place is also easy to get to and at night the stars are amazing to look at as well. This is certainly the number one place to call camp if you’re going to any of the state parks or just passing through for a night.

We had such a great stay here - we took our ev and charged overnight in the rv space, which was great - 50 amp rv spaces were newly graded, private, and a quick walk from the bathrooms and community room./deck. Mike is a really gracious host and the community space was so nice to stretch out - and there was a bonfire with musicians singing and playing late into the night - so lovely. Highly recommended!
