The Tierra del Sol Basecamp is an open desert camping area located within Terlingua Ranch, 3 miles off of Hwy 118, 19 miles north of Study Butte and 22 miles to the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This region of far west Texas is well known for its remote ruggedness and beauty rapidly becoming the go-to place for those wanting to get away from it all, without having to spend a fortune to do it. It’s one of the last frontiers of North America and One of the only two National Parks in Texas. The Basecamp will reside on the 40 acre property. In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. This is "The Field Lab", owned by the well know sustainable engineer John Wells. If you'd like to pay him a visit, please contact him in advance.

Further from the park than expected— over an hour to main hikes and visitor centers. Beautiful area though. Easy to find, especially at night as there were lit up signs to follow. Very very clean, from the bathroom to the campsite. It was windy every evening for the week I was in Big Bend— not just here but everywhere!

It's well off the road and very quiet. If you're looking to be off the grid; yet still close to modest supplies and a National Park. You're in luck this is the place. It's ideal for overlanding. Tent camping is a great option, staking is tough but doable as they terrain is rocky. That's what we did.

Site 5 - Tierra del Sol Basecamp
We stayed two nights at Tierra del Sol in mid-March at Campsite 5 and had an incredible experience. The views alone are worth the trip — wide open landscapes and some of the most breathtaking night skies we’ve ever seen. Being able to walk for hours across the surrounding area and still easily spot our camp was such a unique and peaceful feeling. Kyle, the host, was extremely helpful and clearly puts a lot of care into maintaining the property. One thing future campers should know: if you see supplies, logs, or materials placed somewhere around the site, please leave them where they are. Kyle has worked hard gathering and placing things intentionally to keep the area functional and nice for everyone. The value here is amazing. Being this far removed from everything for such an affordable price is what caught our attention in the first place, and it absolutely lived up to expectations. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that there is WiFi available, and if you get close enough to the connection point the signal is actually pretty strong. Our first night was extremely windy — the kind of wind that actually blew our tent apart! But the weather calmed down the second night and we ended up sleeping under the stars without the tent, which turned into one of the most memorable parts of the trip. The stargazing out here is truly something special. Overall, it was a fantastic stay and we’ll definitely be back.

Site 6 is the best area for sure, you’re in your own little land, very private and you’re most protected from the wind. We definitely plan to be back at Kyle’s place for sure, everything was amazing and Kyle was such a nice guy!

We camped at Tierra del Sol for a few days while exploring the Big Bend area for the first time. Kyle is a terrific host and answered all of our questions. His property seems remote but is only a short drive off the highway. It is well marked but best accessed the first time during the day.

Site 1 - Tierra del Sol Basecamp
Fabulous campsites, tucked away behind big hills! Kyle is a fabulous host and super friendly. I love rocks and his property has the most amazing rock formations and can find small fossils. He allowed us to take them home, which was special for us. Site 1 & 2 are closest to the bathroom. Site 4 faces a really cool little gulley. We explored so much of the land and it is all beautiful! The bathroom was always tidy and uses a composting toilet. Cleanest one I’ve ever used. I highly recommend Tierra del Sol!

Kyle is super nice and came over and gave us the WiFi password. Also, this site has gorgeous mountains surrounding it and has a secluded feel. Definitely better than any of the park campsites. Only downside is that it is probably ~90 minutes from most of the good hikes in the park.

Amazing stay on Site 6. Kyle truly is a super host! The site was tidy and clean upon arrival, Kyle introduced himself and gave us a couple of camping tips as well as activities for the group to check out during our stay. I would highly recommend Tierra Del Sol for anybody looking to escape the city life and connect with nature.

If you are looking for solitude, quietness and a safe location don’t look further. La Tierra del Sol is a very campground to do real primitive camping, do a little hiking. enjoy the views and watching the stars. Kyle is very nice and supportive. I will come back for sure. Highly recommended.

Perfect Big Bend Primitive Base

We loved our stay! The directions were clear, we arrived after dark and were able to set up camp right away, hassle-free. As an fyi, site 5 is at the top of a hill and there just happened to be a cold-front blowing in our first night, so we got hammered pretty hard by the wind - something to be aware of if you foresee similar weather conditions and want to avoid such an experience. It's possible one of the other, lower elevation sites might have provided some more natural landscape relief. Our second night on the other hand was completely still and almost totally silent. Kyle came over and introduced himself on our first morning and was welcoming, friendly, and full of helfpul tips and info for visiting the area. The land is dark and the stars were dazzling each night. We loved the simple set up and stark beauty of camping right there on the desert floor. I was impressed by the cleanliness and ease-of-use of the composting toilet. This was the perfect base-camp for our visit to Big Bend. I would book with Kyle again in a heartbeat, and definitely recommend Tierra del Sol to other devoted primitive campers.

The views and landscape were incredible. As a solo traveler I felt incredibly safe here while also being secluded. Site 6 is nestled back so you do not see any other campers. So much better than being on top of each other at the sites in the park! I would definitely stay here again. The instructions to get to the site were perfect also.

What a great spot in the desert. Kyle was great! The site was amazing. We did some amazing astrophotography and the geology of site 6 is worth checking out. No cell reception but that was actually kind of nice. Definitely recommend!

This campground is a hidden gem for stargazers. Site 6 offers privacy and stunning mountain views. Our clear last night was perfect for stargazing and star photography. Kyle's friendly welcome added to the charm. A short hike led to an incredible panoramic view, ideal for capturing star trail shots. Highly recommend for a memorable outdoor experience.

We stay at Tierra del Sol every year when we come to Big Bend. I’ve stayed in the National Park, the state park and other HipCamp properties, and I won’t stay anywhere else. Best stars, best view, and most deafeningly quiet place to stay!

Site 6 - Tierra del Sol Basecamp
You couldn’t ask for a more beautiful campsite, or a better host. No matter what site you pick the views are amazing, but site 6 is the one you want. Site 6 is the farthest site back and it’s down in a valley, but you still have beautiful views with the plus of having great wind protection. Kyle is an awesome host. We had to book last minute with him at Tierra Del Sol after another HipCamp host decided to hit and run our vehicle as we arrived at The Goat Pens, we immediately started looking for another campsite and Kyle’s was the first one on the list so we rolled the dice, and we are so happy we picked Tierra Del Sol Basecamp. Kyle called us almost immediately after we booked and after hearing what just happened at the other site Kyle even met us out by the road and showed us right to our spot and made sure we were all set.

Beautiful property especially if you want to get away from it all! After we arrived, we just sat for 20 minutes in complete silence taking it all in; beautiful and absolutely quiet. We stayed at site 1 and the other campsites were far enough away. Toilet on site is kept very neat and was conveniently located to our site. Directions were easy to follow and the owner was very helpful!

This was to date our best boondocking spot and we have been a lot of places. If peace and quiet is what you’re searching for this is your spot. Lots of exploring and only 40 Miles to BIG Bend National Park. The host was extremely helpful and kind. You will not regret your decision to stay here under the stars.
