Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road. We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults. One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience. We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views. We have incorporated this into our campground design which, when completely finished, will encompass several hundred acres of Chihuahuan desert vistas. We are also fortunate enough to have a large riparian area on the property. It is in this area, amongst the 40ft tall cottonwood and willows, we often find Gambel's Quail, Scaled Quail, Javelina and numerous bird species including the occasional turkey. We would love nothing more than to share this wonderful place, where we grew up, with souls seeking solitude, adventure and inspiration. Our eastern entrance is just a few miles outside the Big Bend Ranch State Park boundary, conveniently located on Casa Piedra road about 1.6 miles north of FM 170.

We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!
Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance.
As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. This is "The Field Lab", owned by the well know sustainable engineer John Wells. If you'd like to pay him a visit, please contact him in advance.

We are located just 3 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and explore - you can hike, bike, canoe camp; kayak, off-road, swim, go horseback riding, visit hot springs, as well as visit restaurants, galleries, and listen to great music in Terlingua. There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family.
DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in.
Additional details to note:
- We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! Covered with a shade sail the water stays nice and chilly. ($10 fee/person)
- You can stay connected if you'd like to, as cell reception and wifi are both available by the showers. Feel free to unplug during your stay though.
- Seeing other campers on your trip at the campsite is very standard, as the sites are far enough apart to feel like they are yours, but they are not private.
- Non potable water is provided on-site. The showers and non potable water is located approximately 1/4 mile from campsites 1-7.
-We have friendly, quirky miniature goats named Clyde and Stella to visit while up at the showers.

Your privacy and personal space is our #1 priority, so our sites are spread out over the property and most are not in view of other sites, providing you with a backcountry camping experience, yet only a few minutes off the highway. We have several spotlessly clean composting pit toilets on the property, all just a short walk from your site. All guests have access to our centrally located outdoor hot/cold shower. Some of our sites have shade, and all have fire pits and level tent sites.
Rancho de los Arboles Muertos gets its name from the 25 foot tall Eastern Red Cedar trees that are being salvaged from land clearing operations near Austin and "planted" around the property. We're located directly across the highway from Willow Mountain, with an 800 foot sheer face rising over 1000 feet above the highway, making it one of the most prominent features in the area next to the Chisos of Big Bend. The property is covered in Ocotillo, hidden arroyos, tall bentonite dunes, volcanic ridges, dry creeks and the occasional fossil. Trail runners can easily create 5 mile loop over ridges and in arroyos without leaving the property. For the burners out there, the place has an unmistakable deep playa vibe. Welcome home )'(

We are a completely off-grid property, so remember to bring water!
In the event of heavy rain, the roads could become impassible for a few hours to a couple days. If we see a major storm in the forecast, we will contact you directly to discuss options. The rainy season is late summer, however, and we are not taking bookings during that time, so this should not be an issue.

This camp is a sanctuary for those seeking solitude and a connection with the raw beauty of the desert. Nesting Star Camp is situated within the legendary Terlingua Ranch and is strategically located to provide easy access to the stunning offerings of Big Bend National Park, Big Bend Ranch State Park and the surrounding backcountry. The West entrance to Big Bend National Park is 23 miles from the camp. Big Bend Ranch State Park's East entrance is 38 miles from camp.
The camp sits on 5 acres and is located 0.7 miles from Terlingua Ranch Road, which is a paved asphalt road leading to Hwy 118. The final 0.7 miles to the property consist of dirt and gravel roads maintained by the Property Owners Association of Terlingua Ranch (POATRI). These dirt and gravel roads leading to the camp are generally easily traversed, though they can become silty or muddy if it rains. In some areas, heavy rain may cause road flooding. We recommend driving an SUV or a truck, as low-profile cars may struggle depending on the road conditions that day. Please be aware that the roads within Terlingua Ranch, while publicly accessible, are located on private land. We kindly request that you not drive off of any roads, as the surrounding areas are all privately owned. While navigating the deeper parts of Terlingua Ranch can be challenging, reaching the camp is usually straightforward. We've driven in with a 3500 dually with a 20’ gooseneck horse trailer, and we’ve never encountered any issues.
It’s easily accessible yet remote enough to showcase its pristine natural beauty. The surroundings are incredibly tranquil and serene. At night, under Nesting Star Camp's skies, the stars unveil a majestic tapestry that will leave you in awe. The night also awakens with the coyote calls, the gentle desert winds, and the possible flutter of a bat or owl hoot. We also have wild donkeys that roam the area, and you might hear them braying. Please avoid approaching them, though.
We provide a composting toilet for your use. Please note that when we are not present to manage waste (#2), you will be responsible for removing the toilet liner bag and disposing of your waste in the provided trash cans. There is also a shower room, and we will supply solar shower bags for your use. If you’re not familiar with them, please research solar showers before booking. Essentially, they are bags you will be responsible for filling with water and placing in the sun to heat up. On a sunny day, you can achieve a temperature of around 115 degrees, although on cloudy days, it won’t heat beyond the ambient temperature. The camp features two uncovered decks for stargazing and one deck with a roof that is partially open on the sides, providing more shelter from the elements.
Please be aware that this is an off-grid camp, meaning there is no running water or power on-site. You are required to bring your own water. Additionally, we request that you limit generator use to basic needs only and keep it off between 7 PM and 8 AM.
Cell phone coverage on the property can be inconsistent, but on most days, you can expect to get 2-3 bars of 3G signal on Verizon and Google Fi. We personally use a cell phone booster and recommend one if you don't have one, on most days it can provide a 4-bar 3G service. Sometimes, you may need to find an elevated spot to obtain a strong signal. However, it’s important to note that reception can be unreliable, and we recommend you plan ahead. Starlink works very well here.

My husband & I love to car camp and this was the perfect spot for it. The restrooms are extremely clean & the shower was wonderful after a full day of hiking. We were super close to the national park, making it really convenient for us. The views were amazing as well. I highly recommend, we will be staying here again when we return to Big Bend NP.

An absolute hidden gem. We reserved several for a group to hang out and we couldn’t stop talking about when the next time we’d come back. Clean restrooms, nice showers and the host would respond immediately with any questions we had. Definitely recommend this place to anyone!

The camp was great! The host was very fast at responding to all my questions. As a solo tent camper, I felt very safe and comfortable my entire stay. The place has clean bathrooms, a hot shower, a couple picnic tables and outdoor sink that are covered. The campsites were very well kept and you could tell that the host cares about the property and the people that stay there. I will stay there again when I go back and would recommend this place to anyone.
My only feedback is that the campsites could be marked/numbered better. It was first visit to the area, and I arrived at night, so it took me a few minutes to find my campsite.

If you’re looking for a camping spot that is quiet and a bit remote, this is a great spot! This was my second time camping out here and I’m already booked for a third! The bathrooms/showers are very clean and very accessible. Only advise is: be aware that winds can be a bit strong, so if you’re tent camping, be sure to take a low profile tent.

Great location that is tucked away. The showers had hot water and were spacious. They have real toilets with flushing water. Firewood was available on site. AND they offered free Wi-Fi. Highly recommend!

This is absolutely the best camping area I've ever been to! Gorgeous views. Spacious site. Far away from everything but amenities are close enough. I love this place and can't wait to go back! Best place to stargaze, peaceful and beautiful!

Beautiful campsite! It has a covered picnic table, flat openings for tents and a good fire pit. The skies are gorgeous and it’s fully remote.
The dirt road in wasn’t that bad- no issues in a Volvo XC60- about 30 min from 170.
WARNING: There are bears in this area. A black bear came to our campsite at 8pm, but it was easily scared off. There happened to be a carcass in the old water trough that attracted it, but that wouldn’t normally be an issue.
Keep dogs leashed- we saw a pack of 20 javelinas!
Like they say, bring tons of water. We didn’t see water refill stations in Presidio.
The only place that sells firewood in Presidio is True Value hardware- open limited hours. Terlingua has more firewood, but 1.5 to 2 hours away.

We just got back from Pila Montoya 3 which I must say--based on dozens of back country camping trips to the big bend area--is the best all around site we've ever stayed at. Here are the most important things to know:
- we made it to the site in a 4wd Rav 4 w/street tires, not that i would recommend trying it. The road in definitely requires 4wd, but the biggest risk is getting a flat tire--i would not try this again without good all terrain tires
- there's a shelter over the picnic table and a pit toilet. info on this is mixed on other sites
- there's a ton of great hiking all around the site, with plenty of smallish mountains to climb, very awesome for young kids.
- lots of tent pad room but also lots of little rocks; bring a good pad.

We went in May 2015 with our pup. It was a gorgeous day trip from Marfa, though after lunch the ground was incredibly hot and we had to carry our 65lb dog from the car to the river. Take puppy boots!

Contrary to the main description here, this site is not flat w/long views. It's actually nestled between the foothills of the Bofecillos, which provides shelter from the winds that can be an issue at more exposed sites (good for cold weather camping). There are no vistas here, however, so it's a trade-off, but it's not a far drive/hike/bike ride to get to some sweeping views. This is very close to several trailheads making it a great home base for several nights. There is no shade structure here as at other sites in this park, & the desert sun can be brutal. You need 4WD high clearance vehicle to get to this site. One hill on the road in has a few hairy spots to navigate & the road to the actual site is overgrown w/vegetation.

Fresno Vista is an absolutely gorgeous site with complete privacy and views into a small canyon. You will need a high-clearance vehicle to access this site. My 2WD Jeep did great despite a very rugged access road (go slowly), but check with Rangers on current road conditions for any site in this park. It is extremely remote and rugged. Take a full size spare tire (or 2: help is far, far away). This is desert camping so take plenty of water and be sure the rangers know where you will be hiking. Safety should not be taken lightly in the desert. The rewards are high though, with beautiful scenery and complete solitude. Leave your dogs at home lest they become mountain lion bait. Plan to have at least 2 nights in the park to make it worth it.

Bring your own water and skip trying to filter anything from the Rio, its not a good water source and is even recommended not to swim in for health reasons. But hey, it sure is pretty to look at!
These sites are great for car camping or tent camping. Bring your own wood as foraging for it isn't allowed. Also, don't be creeped out by the structure across the river, its just a horse barn :)

Big Bend Ranch State Park is easily the most under rated park in the state. If you're looking for a new view from whats just east at the National Park, this will be a welcome sight. So much vast, desolate dessert to explore.
Tips:
Bring more water than you think you need. There is no shade on trail and the sun is unforgiving even in late winter.
Try to plan a trip around a recent rain. I know thats a tall task but the second tallest waterfall in Texas resides in this park and the 12 mile out and back to it through a canyon is well worth the trip
Bring your Texas State Parks pass to save money. If you want to backcountry camp, its an additional entry fee that you can avoid with the parks pass.
Plan your trip around the moon phase. The full or even new moon will ruin the view of the stars and this park offers some of the best stargazing in the nation. Right up there with the national observatory.
Theres a place to stock up in Lajitas should you need it. There's no such offering in the park. The general store offers great local beer, locally roasted coffee and everything you forgot to pack for the trip.
