Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road.  We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults.  One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience.  We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views.  We have incorporated this into our campground design which, when completely finished, will encompass several hundred acres of Chihuahuan desert vistas.  We are also fortunate enough to have a large riparian area on the property.  It is in this area, amongst the 40ft tall cottonwood and willows, we often find Gambel's Quail, Scaled Quail, Javelina and numerous bird species including the occasional turkey.  We would love nothing more than to share this wonderful place, where we grew up, with souls seeking solitude, adventure and inspiration.  Our eastern entrance is just a few miles outside the Big Bend Ranch State Park boundary, conveniently located on Casa Piedra road about 1.6 miles north of FM 170.

We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance. As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. There is something for everyone to feel free to bring the whole family. DIRECTIONS: Once you are on Road Runner Circle, go past the house on the left with the Christmas lights on. Please continue down the road and follow the road around the curve to the left. The campsites will be on the left and side behind the rock walls. The campsite number that is booked is the campsite you will stay in. Additional details to note: - We now have an above ground pool to keep cool in during the summer! Covered with a shade sail the water stays nice and chilly. ($10 fee/person) - You can stay connected if you'd like to, as cell reception and wifi are both available by the showers. Feel free to unplug during your stay though. - Seeing other campers on your trip at the campsite is very standard, as the sites are far enough apart to feel like they are yours, but they are not private. - Non potable water is provided on-site. The bathrooms and shower stalls were well maintained. The showers were nice and hot even though it was chilly weather.

Elena’s park is a bit of a gem. Not huge but it was perfect for us. We just purchased a new Casita and needed a place near Big Bend to check things out. On our first night, there was a blip in electric service. She came over to help troubleshoot with no luck, and then service was back. Turns out, the electric company was at fault. The day before we left, our fresh water tank was empty. Elena went above and beyond in helping to fill our tank. About the only downside in coming in off the highway, the road is rough and rutted, but not the fault of Elena.

A fantastic campsite just outside of Big Bend Natl Park. Don’t let the dirt bumpy road dissuade you - this is a 5 star site… beautiful views surrounding you. A clean site, fully operational clean bathrooms , excellent shower rooms with amazing warm water. All in a cute central location within the camp. A mixture of fully equipped sites with water and electric plus a shelter and primitive sites as well for those who don’t need that. Just site with a picnic table, fire pit … I’m so impressed. I felt safe as a solo traveler and that warm shower was amazing.

Great spot in the desert! Site was great for looking at stars! I have never seen them so pronounced before! Really appreciated the amenities (showers and toilets). After being in BBNP days and using their facilities, it was nice to get a flushing toilet. Campsite 6 sits a little higher than the others (from what I can see) and offers a nice view of the surrounding area along with the adjacent little canyon. I will definitely booked this place again!

We stayed in the North Shelter for the New Year. Really enjoyed disconnecting from the day to day. All you need to get away. Found restrooms and showers in Study Butte Rv Park to freshen up before/after the park.

Weekend Trip to Willow Creek Camping Company

My 9 year old daughter and I loved camping at this unique gem just outside of BBNP. We camped at Site 6. Perfect setup for car camping: flat tent site, fire ring, and picnic table. Clean restrooms and shower easily accessible. Quiet with a great view of sky. Got some good tips from Retief on an evening trip to Santa Elena Canyon. Will return to this cool spot!

Great quiet basecamp for your adventures into either park. No issues with Elena’s dogs. She answered any questions quickly and made it easy for me to extend my trip a day. Very close to a great cafe and easily walkable to other bars and restaurants. Thanks for sharing your land and giving me a launch pad.

We loved our RV spot! We had a beautiful view of the mountains! Fun social space where we enjoyed dancing in the kitchen then sat by the fire pit listening to music and reflecting on the days hikes in Big Bend NP! Bathrooms and showers were clean and perfect! Great location to Great Bend National Park! Loved how close to the Ghost Town we were but yet felt like we were off grid! Definitely recommend this unique place to stay!

Great place to camp at. Owner is very nice and greeted us when we arrived very late(8:30pm-ish)!! Showed and restrooms were clean anytime I stepped in. Outlets available near each camp site and are spaced out pretty good. My first time, boyfriends second time camping here and we will definitely be back here!

This is absolutely the best camping area I've ever been to! Gorgeous views. Spacious site. Far away from everything but amenities are close enough. I love this place and can't wait to go back! Best place to stargaze, peaceful and beautiful!

Papalote Rancho Viejo Campsite

Beautiful campsite! It has a covered picnic table, flat openings for tents and a good fire pit. The skies are gorgeous and it’s fully remote. The dirt road in wasn’t that bad- no issues in a Volvo XC60- about 30 min from 170. WARNING: There are bears in this area. A black bear came to our campsite at 8pm, but it was easily scared off. There happened to be a carcass in the old water trough that attracted it, but that wouldn’t normally be an issue. Keep dogs leashed- we saw a pack of 20 javelinas! Like they say, bring tons of water. We didn’t see water refill stations in Presidio. The only place that sells firewood in Presidio is True Value hardware- open limited hours. Terlingua has more firewood, but 1.5 to 2 hours away.

Pila Montoya Campsite

We just got back from Pila Montoya 3 which I must say--based on dozens of back country camping trips to the big bend area--is the best all around site we've ever stayed at. Here are the most important things to know: - we made it to the site in a 4wd Rav 4 w/street tires, not that i would recommend trying it. The road in definitely requires 4wd, but the biggest risk is getting a flat tire--i would not try this again without good all terrain tires - there's a shelter over the picnic table and a pit toilet. info on this is mixed on other sites - there's a ton of great hiking all around the site, with plenty of smallish mountains to climb, very awesome for young kids. - lots of tent pad room but also lots of little rocks; bring a good pad.

We went in May 2015 with our pup. It was a gorgeous day trip from Marfa, though after lunch the ground was incredibly hot and we had to carry our 65lb dog from the car to the river. Take puppy boots!

La Monilla Campsite

Contrary to the main description here, this site is not flat w/long views. It's actually nestled between the foothills of the Bofecillos, which provides shelter from the winds that can be an issue at more exposed sites (good for cold weather camping). There are no vistas here, however, so it's a trade-off, but it's not a far drive/hike/bike ride to get to some sweeping views. This is very close to several trailheads making it a great home base for several nights. There is no shade structure here as at other sites in this park, & the desert sun can be brutal. You need 4WD high clearance vehicle to get to this site. One hill on the road in has a few hairy spots to navigate & the road to the actual site is overgrown w/vegetation.

Fresno Vista Campsite

Fresno Vista is an absolutely gorgeous site with complete privacy and views into a small canyon. You will need a high-clearance vehicle to access this site. My 2WD Jeep did great despite a very rugged access road (go slowly), but check with Rangers on current road conditions for any site in this park. It is extremely remote and rugged. Take a full size spare tire (or 2: help is far, far away). This is desert camping so take plenty of water and be sure the rangers know where you will be hiking. Safety should not be taken lightly in the desert. The rewards are high though, with beautiful scenery and complete solitude. Leave your dogs at home lest they become mountain lion bait. Plan to have at least 2 nights in the park to make it worth it.

Arenosa Campsite

Bring your own water and skip trying to filter anything from the Rio, its not a good water source and is even recommended not to swim in for health reasons. But hey, it sure is pretty to look at! These sites are great for car camping or tent camping. Bring your own wood as foraging for it isn't allowed. Also, don't be creeped out by the structure across the river, its just a horse barn :)

Big Bend Ranch State Park is easily the most under rated park in the state. If you're looking for a new view from whats just east at the National Park, this will be a welcome sight. So much vast, desolate dessert to explore. Tips: Bring more water than you think you need. There is no shade on trail and the sun is unforgiving even in late winter. Try to plan a trip around a recent rain. I know thats a tall task but the second tallest waterfall in Texas resides in this park and the 12 mile out and back to it through a canyon is well worth the trip Bring your Texas State Parks pass to save money. If you want to backcountry camp, its an additional entry fee that you can avoid with the parks pass. Plan your trip around the moon phase. The full or even new moon will ruin the view of the stars and this park offers some of the best stargazing in the nation. Right up there with the national observatory. Theres a place to stock up in Lajitas should you need it. There's no such offering in the park. The general store offers great local beer, locally roasted coffee and everything you forgot to pack for the trip.
