In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. We live on a family owned second, third and working on fourth, generation ranch. We run cattle, sheep and goats and even have a donkey or two at any given time. We also have a few chickens, barn cats and friendly dogs. This is a working ranch, so it is bustling with farm work activities. You can primitive camp in the woods if you want a little less hustle and bustle or by the 20 acre lake if fishing is your passion. We also have a small primitive cabin available by the lake. We also have a canoe and kayak available for rent. You might camp during hay season and you can observe hay cutting, raking, and baling. Or perhaps during pecan season and see pecan harvesting. If you stay during calf weaning season, be prepared to hear lots of mooing and bawling! You can request to add hands on adventures too. Feed Jasper (the head donkey) peppermints, pet the goats and sheep. Feed the chickens, maybe gather eggs. 2 nights at Glamp like a Champ

This spot is such a gem. We loved meeting the goats and chickens and seeing how lovingly curated they have made this space. Jeffrey was so kind and a wealth of knowledge about farming and gardening. Our dog had a ball playing frisbee with enough space to really run, and the RV was so spacious! Beautiful night of bon firing under the stars. We will definitely be back <3

I loved the dispersed tent camping area, a perfect place for my dog to run around and I could see how it’d be easy for a large group! And the flexibility of being able to go to the tasting room up the hill to grab a wine bottle or two cannot be overstated. Very nice, would recommend.

My family and I had a great time! Rick was a perfect host. We mentioned wanting to do some fishing, so he put us near the pond. We were able to catch some decent-sized largemouth bass and bluegill. At our camp, we were visited by many of the animals roaming around. Willie and Doc really enjoyed hanging around our camp.

We loved this spot! My dog is older now so it was really nice to have him be able to run around in a big field with soft grass. I put his booties on when we walked through the trails. The lake is gorgeous and peaceful, the woods are fun to explore, and the campsite is clean and private. Jamie was so welcoming. We will definitely be back here.

I loved camping at the 4R Winery! Getting in and out was super easy. The pdf info pack provided on their website was really helpful in picking out the right option for us and having the firewood included in the fee was great. I really appreciate the dispersed camping in a state that is severely lacking. There are two things I would say to be aware of if you are looking to do dispersed camping. 1) The field is large but most of it doesn’t have shade so realistically, spots are a bit limited, and 2) there is nothing between you and other campers so even though there is decent distance between you, you can see and hear everything from neighbors. Also be aware that you are in wind turbine country and when the weather is right, you hear the whoosh whoosh of the blades from the nearest turbine. I got used to it about an hour after laying down to sleep lol. Other than that, it was great. Beautiful land, gorgeous starry sky and nature moving around you. I’d definitely stay there again!

Lovely spot with shade trees and open, quiet land. We could hear the water fowl and water lapping in the lake behind the camp spot. We didn't see or hear anyone from when we arrived until we left. It was a calm place we needed to pause and reset.
