Elmlock was named by MJ's Grandfather for the majestic Elm trees that once graced the property and banks of the Tulpehocken Stream passing through the Union Canal lock. These beautiful trees were devastated by the Dutch Elm Disease in the early 20th century. Elmlock and the surrounding area was surveyed by non other than George Washington as plans were formulating to build a canal system to join the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Rivers. The General stayed with his friend Captain Michael Lei on the adjacent farm, once known as the Tulpehocken Manor when visiting the area. The ruins of one of the canal locks remains on the Elmlock property adjacent to the camping area. The 1838 stone farmhouse was built by the Spengler family and acquired by MJ's Grandfather in 1913. MJ's pottery studio is a local "Town Barn" that was relocated piece by piece to Elmlock by MJ"s brother, a Historic Restoration Specialist, in 1974. He also restored the Bake Oven on the property's Summer Kitchen. Our property features an historic canal lock from 1828 Union Canal and a stream that runs through it. There is a RR track that runs just south of our camp about 10acres away For campers who love to watch or hear trains you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so! You can enjoy fishing and playing in the water, which is fresh, clean limestone water from a nearby quarry. We also have two small goats on the property. We will be decorated for Halloween. We are currently working a scary trail. Pitch your tent along Irish Creek under a canopy of Maples at Mystic Hollow. Irish Creek stream is a tributary to the Schuylkill River. The land is mostly flat for walking to camping area. There is also a small bridge that goes over a small strip of wetlands. Fire rings are included. I can haul your gear to your spot with tractor and wagon if needed. There is a port-a-potty close by. If you have your own portapotty, you must take the waste with you. We have no way to dispose of human waste. Absolutely no disposing of human waste on the property or in the trash. There will be a fine. We are flexible with check-in and check-out times if we are not at full capacity. Just let us know ahead of time. We allow dogs. They must be on leashes unless they are friendly and play well with others. You must clean up your dog's poop! No exceptions! We are 5 minutes from the Schuylkill River. 10 minutes from Ontelaunee Lake. 15 minutes from Blue Marsh. 15 minutes from the Appalacian Trail. Trail heads nearby Port Clinton, Hamburg, Bernville, Bethel, Blue Rocks, Kempton... 20 minutes from Hawk Mountain. We are an hour from Jim Thorpe. There are several wineries in the area including Long Trout Winery where wine is cool and hippy chicks rule! My favorite! Lots of wildlife. Expect to hear owls, blue heron, cows, goats, chickens, hawks, eagles, dogs, racoons and coyotes. Racoons will steal food that is not put away or in coolers. Deer may walk past in the middle of the night. Hiking, kayaking, tubing, fishing, mountain biking, bike trails, etc... all nearby. Sadly there are no fish in Irish Creek worth catching. The Crayfish are! As with any land situated along a water source, there is always a possibility of flooding. We flood maybe once a year, once every other year. If that should happen, we will assist in hauling gear. There is higher ground for tents to be set up if need be. There will also be rooms available to rent in the near future. It is private and has the same set up as site one. Park your car on top of hill and walk on down. It is a lovely spot. Walk is about 50 yards down a steep hill. Pack accordingly. Campsite #3 (High Site) Site 3 is above the river and looks over Hawk Mountain and the farm. It is private with beautiful views. Unreal full moon gazing............. Sunrise, Sunset, Moon rise, Bird watching, all very visible from this site. Car accessible, no walking to campsite required. At all sites, different seasons bring different activities. Spring: Kayaking, fishing and hiking. Summer: hiking, fishing in the pond, cooling off in the swim hole. Fall: raptor watching, hiking, biking plus fishing, (license required), in the Little Schuylkill. The nights are dark with star lit skies. Fantastic stay! The farm is amazing and site #3 was beautiful. We had the perfect weekend. Host was very friendly and the communication was great! We felt very welcome. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is just a few minutes away and the site itself is nicely set up, very quiet and private with a picturesque view of the mountain. Highly recommend! We are already looking forward to returning.

This is our second year staying at Susan's Christmas Tree Farm campsite! and we'll be back again! I think going late October almost insures you'll have the whole place to yourself which makes for a really peaceful and relaxing stay... probably a little too cold for some but I love the cold! Campsite is always prepared and clean, stocked with your (pre-purchased) firewood, water and a sink to clean dishes and a cool little port-a-potty! The view of Hawk Mountain is incredible especially with a lit night sky and the moon! last year we hiked Hawk Mountain and this year we hiked a bit of the Appalachian Trail only couple miles form the campsite. My favorite local place for beers and a burger is McKeansburg Hotel and Tavern great bartender, service and friendly local hangout! I highly recommend this place!

I had a great night camping at Mel's! She was so thoughtful and nice to talk to, helped me get set up for the night, and showed me around the property so I felt very safe and had a relaxing evening and night. It was lovely meeting Bear the dog and the cats on the property as well, such sweethearts. The campsite was a good size, was decorated for the upcoming holiday, and had plenty of privacy from the road. Beautiful clear starry skies. I'm glad I stayed at Mel's along my trip!

Weekend Trip to Peace & Quiet by the River!

Visited late October. Beautiful! We did site 3, which was perfect as we bring a lot of gear for comfort and could unload right from our truck. It's adjacent to a small grove of trees so you do have some cover, but you are more exposed than many/most sites. Despite that, you still feel like you have all the privacy in the world, which is incredible. Firewood, eggs and water were waiting for us when we arrived. Views of Hawk Mountain were unreal both in the slight haze of the morning and the golden glow of sunset. Stars were insane. Firepit was large and the wood was some of the best firewood I've ever burned. Generous with the kindling so getting the fire started was easy and it burned hot and slow. Finding our site was simple enough, and communication with Jenn was excellent. There is a freight train that comes by at random intervals, but I thought it was actually kind of cool. Overall an awesome and unique experience and my wife and I definitely want to come back and bring some friends with us to share it with.

Weekend Trip to Meadowbrook Country Farm

This is a nice camping spot in a little hidden valley nestled in a ridge south of Second Mountain. The views of Blue Mountain from the road to the campsite are amazing. If you need firewood, you can get bundles for $5 at 1187 Deturksville Rd (7 mins away). A natural spring has made the ground too soggy to go to the pond unless you have boots. Every now and then a truck might drive by on the paved driveway going to and from the farm up the hill. The only negative for this spot is the industrial/farming noises that came on in the evening. It sounded like loud fan noise in the near distance which was a little annoying. At least it wasn't constant because I noticed it was totally quiet halfway through the night, thank goodness.

Our experience with this farm was a bit different than most people’s stays, as we’re an organization that supported a family in need by placing our transitional housing camper here for 28 days. From the moment we arrived, Seth and Stephanie were incredibly warm and welcoming, giving the family the space and grace they needed to heal and transition during a difficult time. The farm was absolutely the perfect setting for this season of life. The open fields and natural views provided a peaceful, restorative environment that you simply can’t find in more traditional settings. There’s something deeply healing about being surrounded by nature and wide-open spaces. The kids were entertained watching the chickens, geese, turkeys, and sheep wandering about the property. These simple joys made such a meaningful difference during their stay and created sweet memories during a challenging transition. I would highly recommend this spot to anyone traveling through the area, but also to locals who want a new taste of their own community. This farm offered our family something truly special - a safe harbor and a chance to experience beauty and peace during a time they needed it most. We absolutely loved our overnight on Mary's land Friday night. We were lucky enough to be the only campers. We typically camp primitive style but I needed reliable cell service due to being on medical call. My kiddos had a blast playing with the neighbor boys and are asking to go back next weekend:) The only thing that I am not sure about is how close the sites are together if all three sites are full since this was not our experience. We will definitely be back, thank you Mary!

Sarah and Jenn were SO accommodating of my late arrival and excellent directions were given so I found my site just fine even in the dark. The site was beautiful, great view of Hawk Mountain, just as described. Loved how close the site was to the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary; only five minutes’ drive! My partner and I did lots of hiking, geocaching, and birdwatching there during our stay :) The river was easily accessible from the high site and so peaceful to explore, especially with all the fall foliage, I want to come back and stay riverfront next time! Check out process was smooth and simple, thanks again to Mr. Mike for coming out to jump my car!
