A short walk down the wooded trail brings you to a small clearing with a central fire pit and several areas suitable for a tent. Situated close to a road, traffic can be heard but easily tuned out, particularly as the road gets much quieter at night. The woods are next to a large open field that is great for star gazing. The Spruill Farm belonged to the Spruill Family for over a hundred years and has been set up as conservation easement protected land in '23. It includes hardwood forest, swamp, a beautiful swimming beach* on the Albemarle Sound - one of the largest freshwater sounds in the world-, acres of farmland, vegetable garden and perhaps the largest fig orchard for hundreds of miles around. The purpose of the Spruill Farm is to further environmental research, promote ecological education and sustainable practices, and provide access for the public to the ever-diminishing shoreline experience. Please enjoy the incredible sunsets and woodland views, while respecting the serenity of this unique gem on the inner-banks.
Wildlife on the property include Red Fox, River Otter, and 95 species of birds, including Bald Eagles (2 nests on the farm), nesting Osprey, Wood Ducks. Visit the 'Spruill Farm Conservation Project' on inaturalist(dot)org to see all 95 species, and upload any images from your observations.
Because it is a nature preserve, please read the guidelines and rules closely if you choose to book with us.
*Note: the shoreline changes with the wave action and the seasons. The beach is bigger in winter, smaller in summer. These changes make the Bobby Wilkins shoreline trail so beautiful- always changing.

There were plenty of spots to pull up to with flat areas for pitching a tent and multiple fire rings well spaced out. Would definitely come back.

Spruill Conservation Camp is in a beautiful natural setting on the sound with gorgeous bald cypress trees with osprey nests that you can see from your tent. The campsite was clean and ready when we arrived. There was plenty of firewood for purchase (honor system) and water from the pump for use other than drinking. The porta potty was clean and in a good location (close enough but far enough away from the campsite). We brought our kayaks but unfortunately the water was too choppy but we did care, we just enjoyed the sounds. We saw a beautiful sunset from the campsite. We will definitely return!

The place was awesome and beautiful. ALOT of space all to your self. The host was fantastic didn't bother us unless we asked him for stuff. Opened his entire place to me and my family and let us do what we wanted. He let my kids pet, clean, brush, ride, feed the horses. We asked and he had no problem doing that for my young kids for a small extra fee. He's great, the place is great and private. Trails to hike through as well. We ll be going back many times for a quick quiet getaway. Oh and he let my daughter chase the sheep! She was dying to play with that thing and he let her go. Cant say enough great things about the host and place.

This spot was outstanding! Thoughtful campsites and friendly communicative hosts made everything much easier. The sites are well maintained and the views of the Albermarle Sound are exemplary. Campsite 3 had awesome wooden log benches around the fire pit! The use of kayaks was a delight- take the time if you can to explore the watery cypress coastline and enjoy the sounds and sights. We have a wonderful time. Everything was just right! We will absolutely return! Thank you!

This campsite was absolutely beautiful. There are three campsites on the property all waterfront and well spaced for ample privacy. There were two very clean port-o potty’s, nice picnic tables and fire rings at each site. We stayed at site one which was a nice flat patch nestled in a water-side forest. This is a good site if you have kids because it is in between a water pump, a bathroom and closest to the trails/beach area. There are several nice trails along the property that take you through a picturesque marsh. We saw a bald eagle among other cool wildlife. Spring was a good time to go because we saw little to no bugs. We had a wonderful time and hope to return some day.
