The best great views camping near Asheville

·

If mountains are your backdrop of choice, you’ve come to the right place. Amid the forested slopes of western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is a veritable paradise for outdoor adventurers on a camping trip. Road-trippers can follow the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, while hikers use the city as a basecamp for trekking the Appalachian Trail (a 95-mile section runs through North Carolina). Or take your pick from the two national forests and seven state parks right on the city’s doorstep. If you need another excuse to swing by, Asheville is also renowned for its arts district and craft beer scene.

The site's (there's only one!) first appeal is the amazing view of Bull Mountain Ridge. Beautiful all year long, but particularly in late October when the leaves are in their richest colors. It feels private and tucked away, but is very accessible to all of what the Asheville area has to offer. Downtown is a 15 minute drive; ride services and shuttles are both easy to secure and quite affordable. The backdrop of the site is forested and easy to relax in - the understory is maintained for guest use, providing cooling shade with a stunning view. I usually try to say hello to folks and make sure they get settled in alright, but let me know if you'd prefer just to come in and have privacy. Don't feel the need to come to the house unless you can't get a hold of me via text and you need assistance. I may not be available when you arrive, but I'll try to get back in touch with you as soon as I'm able. **Please be aware that this section of North Carolina has a particularly large population of American black bears. Any food stuffs, or other "smell-ables" will potentially attract bears. Refer to: https://www.nps.gov/articles/bearsafetyfood.htm ...for proper treatment of potential attractants.

My wife and I moved to the area, from Boone, in the spring of 2014. Our dream was to own a house, preferably a cabin, on top of a mountain with long range views and a gradual winding road to the top. Living in Boone, this dream was definitely out of reach. When we began our search for a new home in the Asheville area, we discovered that the more affordable homes were in fact on the mountains. Perfect! In general I always have a pretty positive outlook on what’s possible, however, I was skeptical that we would ever find our dream home. As Jeannie began her Zillow browsing adventures, one particular cabin with acreage, that was outside of our budget continued to pop up. Jeannie would delete it and then it would come back. At some point the price began to drop, and drop, and drop. On our way back into town one weekend after attending a wedding, I convinced Jeannie to drive by the cabin just because we had the time. Immediately we fell in love and reached out to our realtor buddy. It was more of a shot in the dark but it couldn’t hurt, right? We held our breath for the next month totally expecting someone to get it under contract before us or the sellers not accepting our offer. It had already been reduced significantly so we knew our chances of a lowball offer were slim. We offered the most that we could get a loan for. They accepted! I still get anxious thinking back to that month, October 2014. Many years and two children later, here we are, just as excited everyday to make the long trek up our mountain as we were that August of 2014, and now we are happy to offer a similar experience to you, without having to buy the place. Never stop dreaming! Hope to see you soon, cheers! Learn more about this land:   Pitch your tent in the grass on the tip top of the mountain or park your camper in the flat gravel spot with a fire pit just below the top with beautiful views overlooking Cane Creek.  In the fall and winter enjoy 360 degree views and in the summer enjoy the shade and cool breeze while relaxing & snacking on wild wine berries and black raspberries.   What you will not find is light pollution, traffic, and a desire to leave the mountain.  Fall asleep to the calls of the hoot owl and wake up to the knocking of the wood pecker.       If & when you decide to explore the area, be sure to checkout Hickory Nut Gap farm just 7.9 miles away & Whistle Hop Brewery 7.7 miles away.  Turgua brewery just down on Cane Creek road is only 6.2 miles from camp.  Cane Creek Valley Farm as well as the Cane Creek Community swimming pool is also at the base of camp just in case the kids need a dip of ice cream or a dip in the pool.  Justus Apple Orchard is only 10 miles down the mountain towards Hendersonville.  We love taking our kids there.      We are only 15 miles from downtown Asheville & Hendersonville, and 22 miles from Lake Lure. Peace and privacy await you on ouWe are still cler farm, pasture and woods, this working herb farm is a haven for rest and exploring. The Sites are situated far enough from each other to allow for privacy. Our land was originally where the Cherokee grew their medicine with Mt. Pisgah looking over us. Please be aware we are not completely cleared up after Hurricane Helene so we are limiting cars to 2 per site. There is parking about a mile away, or we can fit a 2 cars per site . If this is an issue please contact me to discuss. Also note we look a little different. The campsites are fine but the creek has changed its banks and the driving path moved a little. Please drive slowly on driveway and grounds. Drones are only allowed on our property and only in daylight hours and must be discussed with us prior. Our farm is Organic and we minimize the amount of chemicals used on it out of respect to the land. The creek has clean water, although we provide well water for the humans. Beautiful mountain views and complete privacy located on 11 secluded acres. 1/2 mile to Bailey Mountain hiking trials and 1/2 mile to downtown Mars Hill where you can enjoy the university, restaurants, brewery, coffee shops, grocery stores, and art galleries. 20 minute drive to downtown Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, and Wolf Laurel ski slopes. Come enjoy this one of a kind peaceful, completely off grid glamping experience. ***Dome is completely off grid, runs completely off solar power. Guests can check how much power they have on the generator under the kitchen countertop by hitting the display button. Electric should be sufficient but glampers will do are responsible for using the electricity responsibly so as to not drain the battery completely. There is a microwave for cooking, a charcoal grill on the deck (charcoal and grill necessities included) and a fire ring for open flame cooking. There is a hammock provided for warmer days! Please note that when temperatures dip into the teens and the single digits make sure to bring warm clothing as dome can still get a bit chilly on those nights. Also note that there is a hand washing station outside of the dome next to the port a potty however when temperatures dip into the teens and single digits the water can freeze up in the hand washing station. We do also provide hand sanitizer as a back up. The outdoor shower is only open typically from April through October. In addition, the only form of heat is a wood burning stove with starters and wood provided, so it will be your responsibility to make sure that the stove keeps burning with wood as to keep the dome warm. This most likely will entail getting up at least once a night to stoke/put wood on the fire. On very hot summer days the dome can get very warm inside. We have a high powered fan and black out curtains to help but it still can get very warm. Best to utilize the outdoor space in the late morning/early afternoon hours or use this time to explore the area. THERE IS NO AIR CONDITIONING! Also, there may be some bugs that you see. Especially stink bugs in September and October. We do our best to keep bugs out, yet this is a Glamping experience which is between camping and a typical Airbnb experience so please plan/pack/expect accordingly. Thanks!

We have lived in the valley of a farming community for 11 years now. We've been overwhelmed with the beauty outside our window. The view from your RV is acres worth of a working farmland surrounded by mountains. You might catch a farmer driving his tractor down the road, a person on horseback or a team of cyclist bike pass by. But you never know what surprise the sky has in store! Fortunately, we are a quarter of a mile from highway 64 that leads to everywhere, as in hiking, kayaking, mountain biking etc. We are centered between Pisgah and Dupont National Forests, Panthertown Valley, Bracken Mountain Preserve and Gorges State Park. Get away from the crowds. On 300 beautiful acres once operated as a children's summer adventure camp, this property has a bathroom for camper use. There are 3 primitive campsites, 2 cottages, and a horse sanctuary. The campsites are spaced out around the property for privacy. Ask about bathroom use depending on the season. 4WD or AWD is recommended for all sites due to 1/2 mile gravel road and then completely off road for a short distance. Or, if you are bringing 2WD, there is plenty of parking and then walk to your campsite. We don't recommend trying to bring large RV's due to the access. We have not had a problem with Black Bears on the property. Help us keep it that way. Do not store or keep food in your tent. Don't sleep with food. Keep in mind bears are omnivores much like us. They eat mostly plants but also eat meat. For more info on bear safety, visit www.bearwise.org Winter camping is encouraged with free firewood. However, you will probably need to park on the gravel and walk to your campsite to limit soil erosion of the off-road trail. Pets are welcome only at some sites, but please please let us know you are bringing them and they will need to be leashed due to other animals. A large part of the property is forest with hiking trails, creeks, and wildlife. You can see wildflowers and lightning bugs in season along with deer, turkey, and horses. And all of our spots have a great view of the sky! We're not far from the Bare Dark Sky Observatory. The grass horse arena and the pond were originally built for the summer camp. The pond is stocked with bass and bluegill and has a chorus of bullfrogs in summer. The arena is flat and has a long range mountain view all the way to Mt. Mitchell (highest peak east of the Mississippi). There are also a meadow spot encircled by trees.

Indigo Eagle Sanctuary is an incredible place to experience the abundance of nature in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our Sanctuary features two main areas: Mountain Tops, or Creekside sites. Immerse yourself in beauty and adventure, with waterfalls, a rushing creek, fishing, and camping. Our creek properties include the Creekside Cabin, and Waterfall Haven (multiple camping site options, with their own areas by the creek). Guests have room to explore the mossy wonderland along Hornbuckle Creek, take a dip in a swimming hole, take an adventure and follow a rough trail (at your own risk) to another waterfall, accessed across the creek, or just kick back and relax. (Note to guests: Trail has not been maintained since last year. Go at your own risk.) Our mountaintop options include Eagle’s Nest and Songbird Campsites. These two sites provide breathtaking, long-range mountain views and epic sunsets. They are great for quick get-aways, with ease of access to main roads/highways. Indigo Eagle Sanctuary Sites are located within a few miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee Reservation (museum, shops, dining) and Maggie Valley, a quaint mountain town with more shops, food, and entertainment. Nearest grocery stores are Ingles in Waynesville, or Food Lion in Cherokee. The popular Asheville is about a 50minute drive from our Sanctuary. Plenty to explore here, while being able to unplug and unwind. *Disclaimer The creekside camping involves a road that will require vehicle clearance in order to access campsites. 4wd is not required but adequate vehicle clearance will be necessary as we have received damages from storms.

Thanks!

Asheville camping guide

Where to go

Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley

East of Asheville, the wooded peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains ripple out onto the horizon, affording endless opportunities for hiking and camping. Make a pitstop to sample the craft beer in Black Mountain, hit the trail in the Swannanoa Valley, or admire the mountaintop views at Mount Mitchell State Park. For a break from the mountains,

has lakeside camping, where you can swim, fish, or rent a kayak.

The Great Smokies

Mountain road trips don't come more spectacular than the Blue Ridge Parkway, especially if you time your drive for fall foliage season. Bring your RV and follow the epic drive all the way into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, known for its misty mountains, sweeping wildflower meadows, and the Appalachian Trail, which traces the border of North Carolina and Tennessee.

South Asheville

South of the city, high peaks, waterfalls, and dense woodlands blanket the landscapes of the Pisgah National Forest, which stretches all the way to meet the Nantahala National Forest in the west. Both parks have several campgrounds to choose from, with tent and RV sites, cabin rentals, and dispersed camping available. Closer to the city, Chimney Rock State Park is known for its namesake crag, rock climbing trails, and spectacular hikes.

When to go

The best weather for hiking and camping around Asheville is April through October, but this mountain city has outdoor activities to suit all seasons. Leaf-peepers flock to the surrounding hills in fall, with fall foliage—and its accompanying crowds—peaking in October. Wildflowers set the countryside ablaze with color through spring and summer, while winter campers can rent a cozy mountain cabin and hit the ski slopes.

Know before you go

  • Asheville has plenty of supermarkets, restaurants, and gas stations, and you’ll find several shops selling camping and outdoor supplies.
  • There are no admission fees for North Carolina state parks, but camping reservation fees apply.
  • Tick season runs from late spring through early fall in the Asheville region, so cover up when hiking and check for ticks after outdoor activities.
  • Backcountry camping is allowed on national forest land as long as you are more than 500 feet from a road.
