The cabin at wild ridge is OFF GRID (meaning no power or running water) but I promise, with our solar panels and rain collection system you won't miss being ON the grid at all! The cabin and the drive (or hike) up was designed for the adventurous at heart! So, drive on up if you have 4WD or AWD and if you don't, no worries! Just park in the designated space, grab your gear and hike on up! (The hike in is steep... about 300 ft but takes less than 5 minutes) We have a cooler up there for any perishables you may have, just bring ice :)
Please note: We have to close the outdoor heated shower during the cold winter months, however we provide an all season 5 gallon solar shower bag to use during this time. We also have a list at the cabin of other places nearby that provide hot showers in the winter months for a small fee.
In the rare event that heavy snow is expected, we will have to close the road leading up to the cabin because of its steepness. If this occurs, you will be given a full refund for the cancellation.
To heat the cabin, there is a un-vented wall mounted heater that heats the space really well! Since the cabin is insulated, the heater works quick to heat the small area up so you will stay nice and cozy!

I sleep a lot on the day bed in the living room so the Sawmill can be comfortably rented for up to 4 guests. The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

James landed on the property in 2009, built a small dairy barn and milked 3 cows for a couple years before building the two cabins. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters.
Together they manage a botanically interesting hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months. Orchard House was built entirely by James from the cement blocks to the roof. It’s very creative and cozy, besides spacious for a tiny home. People describe it as “dreamy”, also “perfect”.
Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We love hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

We offer guests an off-grid and authentic Appalachian experience at our hike-in cabins and campsites located on 500 private acres atop the Newfound Mountains in Western North Carolina!
Our Trailhead is located 45 minutes west of Asheville, NC and our hike-in trail is 2 miles long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The hike-in trail utilizes an old forest service road which follows a creek providing verdant landscapes and soothing sounds as you make your way up the mountain to our cabins and campsites.
We have two antique Appalachian cabins on-site and two campsites available. Our cabins and campsites are priced per person and can be reserved individually or collectively through an entire property buyout. A hearty and healthy breakfast is served each morning in our Main Lodge and is included and you'll never pay a cleaning fee on this mountain because we believe in Southern hospitality!
Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay.
Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Cabin #2 also features a full bathroom with and a tree-house like view from the front porch!
Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Camp 1 and Camp 2 both measure 12’x15’ and feature a soft grassy surface surrounded by natural boulder walls. Both campsites sit beside our neighboring property owned by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and feature a long-range mountain views. Our 95-acre farm was once owned by the Davis family who predominantly raised dairy cattle. We now raise the wooly Mangalitsa pig and sell to the best chefs and restaurants. We sell our pork at the farm too!
All of our campsites are next to running water except the two hilltop sites.
Two porta-potties are on the farm and private porta-potties are available for rent. Groups of eight or more are required to rent a porta potty should you not bring your own toilet system with you. We do not allow the use of our small wooded areas as toilets. No porta potties are provided b/tw Dec 15 and March 15

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling.
Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood.
You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7.
Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more.

The outhouse is a thing of the past, just recently I installed a compositing toilet besides the bedroom.We also offer The Summit which is a high elevation, 2-story cabin surrounded by national forest which has evolved into an off-grid living and play space located at nearly 3300 feet elevation on a 1/2 acre flat with an incredible view. There are very private old forest service trails leading directly into the Pisgah National Forest.

Our Trailhead is located 45 minutes west of Asheville, NC and our hike-in trail is 2 miles long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay.
Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. Our 95-acre farm was once owned by the Davis family who predominantly raised dairy cattle. We now raise the wooly Mangalitsa pig and sell to the best chefs and restaurants. We sell our pork at the farm too!
All of our campsites are next to running water except the two hilltop sites.
Two porta-potties are on the farm and private porta-potties are available for rent. Groups of eight or more are required to rent a porta potty should you not bring your own toilet system with you. We do not allow the use of our small wooded areas as toilets. No porta potties are provided b/tw Dec 15 and March 15

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling.
Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood.
You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7.
Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more.

Beautiful drive in following a river, location was easy to find when set in town (service cuts out). The house is cozy and gorgeous. Climate was easy to control with heaters/fan. Full kitchen and running water indoors was great to get a shower. Outhouse with compost toilet + shower/tub and sink in the indoors upstairs were great after camping. Beautiful land with cows (and I've been tipped off that baby goats will be joining the farm as well) worth a stroll about. Would definitely come back!

What an incredible stay!! I will be frequenting. The bathhouse is finished and gorgeous! Located directly across the road from the a frame. Loved the cold plunge and creekside sauna that were walking distance from the site. One of my favorite things was sitting by the creek at the a-frame and hearing it babble from the firepit and porch. The bed was incredibly comfortable, cozy linens. Highly recommend!! Can’t wait to try their treehouse next time!!

This was a perfect spot for a quick winter overnight. The wood stove was lovely, and the dogs and I even slept on the floor next to it. It kept us very toasty on a very cold night!

Stayed at site #5, It was super cute and secluded! Everyone was very friendly and pups are welcome on and off leash. Only 20 minutes from town if you don’t feel like cooking over the fire.

1 night at Cold Spring Basecamp
Amazing stay at this property!! We stayed at the A frame cabin and loved how it felt luxurious with all the amenities like the bathhouse, shower, sauna, and cold plunge, but we also still felt immersed in nature and like we were camping. Amazing property and amazing host!

1 night at At the Ridge Camp-Riverside Escapes
I loved it and will return. I knew there would be electricity, a fridge, a bed, etc., but I did not expect a fancy bathhouse with flushing toilets and hot showers! And there was wi-fi! The mattress was very comfy and there was an easy chair to relax in. So cozy! The cabin is right on the river, and I enjoyed just sitting on a chair on the porch and watching the water. There are several cabins in a row next to each other, but plenty of space between and privacy walls. There are hiking trails just a stone's throw away, and it was great to be able to do a long hike and then get right back to the cozy cabin. Tom and Carrie were amazing, so helpful and communicative! Thank you!

Weekend Trip to Raven Ridge
The tiny house was so lovely and warm, decorated in a really welcoming way. James was very generous and picked up batteries for us in town when we realized our camera was out. The nature sounds and starry sky were so gorgeous and we loved going for hikes, walking around their little neighborhood and the adjoining community spaces, and visiting the hot springs. Kitchen was well stocked, as was the bookshelf and music collection. I would absolutely love to visit again!
Accessibility notes: parking is down a small hill from the house. The house has a sweet patio with about 3 stairs to access on the front and back. The bedroom is up a beautiful spiral staircase of about 10 steps, which was a bit finicky to navigate, but there were written instructions that going up the stairs backwards could help (we didn't try this). The outhouse is a little ways away from the house with about 3 stairs to access, front and back.

Weekend Trip to Cold Spring Basecamp
We loved our stay at the Windy A frame. It was a beautiful night to stay, jut chilly enough for us to turn the heater on for a little bit but crack a window and listen to the creek. We made a fire and the camp dishes and cookware provided in the cabin under the bed were wonderful to utilize. We used the cold plunge in the morning and Hartwell was so nice to let us try out the sauna as well. It was a great stay, we’d love to be back and will pass the rec along to friends.

I loved this place! It's exactly as described. Quiet and a perfect weekend getaway. Just be careful pulling into the parking spot near the cabin.. There's a tree in the middle. Otherwise.. Super easy to navigate if you have the AWD/4WD. Would absolutely stay here again and would recommend :)

peaceful, and easy to find. We loved out little winter escape to the A-frame. We brought in our own water so we didnt have to filter. The toilets are great! Everything is so well keep up.
