Our slice of paradise consists of 225 acres of forested land nestled in the foothills of the Catskills near Albany. We are a homestead and small campground devoted to the principles of organic farming and self-reliance. Modern agriculture and big business are unsustainable, destroying farmland at an accelerating pace. It is important for us to teach the next generation, there is an alternative. We produce much of our own food. We have friendly goats, chickens, ducks, peacocks, donkeys and horses the guests can pet and feed. There are no swimming holes on our property, but many waterfalls and swimming spots within a short drive (see list below). A quick 5 minute drive will get you to one of the best disc golf courses in the north east. For the truly adventurous, Clarksville Cave is a short drive away. Visit their website for list of proper gear and rules. We do rent some of the equipment needed.

The building site is an old Charchoal mound that was in use in the 1700's so there is a lot of history between the building and site where it sits. According to a few sources we've consulted, the Mohican people (Eastern Algonquian family of tribes - not to be confused with the Mohawk, a distinctly different tribe) were the indigenous occupants of the land where our farm is now located. Historians note that the name Mohican is from the indigenous word meaning "water that flows in two directions." Most Mohicans were driven into western NY and Canada when the Revolutionary War broke out.
Local history indicates that the first white occupants to build here were the Hawley Family, in 1790. Parts of the farmhouse date to this era. Outbuildings were added through the decades and centuries, and the land was used as a dairy farm, among other ventures, by previous owners.
We purchased the property in 2021 in hopes of providing more space, nature and outdoor living for our two little ones. We have two fields dedicated to Christmas trees, as well as apple, pear and cherry trees, and we've had successful garlic harvests to share with neighbors, family, friends, and at local farmers' markets. We have been the caretakers of this land and cabin since 2015, when we bought it from the builder of the modest cabin on-site, Steve.
It is our family camp, but we love to share it with friends and fellow nature-loving campers.

The cabin has two rooms, and there is a kids playground and tire swing making this an appropriate family camping getaway. There is a solar panel providing indoor lights and phone charging capabilities, a fire pit with a grill, and a simple array of pots, dishes, and utensils. There is a spring-fed 55 gallon reservoir of potable water that will slowly refill as well.
Though not far off the road, there is very little car traffic, and the surroundings are very peaceful. The din of the running stream is a constant, while the sounds of coyotes and owls can be heard at night. As the name indicates, the east-facing hillside is often witness to incredible moonrises, and the stars are always bright.
Nearby Attractions:
The Beer Diviner small-scale brewery and taproom is a stone's throw away from the parking area with a selection of tasty beer and some food options available. In addition to regular hours, there are special summer events, and live music every Saturday night.
Cherry Plain State Park is a 'less-traveled' state park and campground just 3.5 miles up the road, offering lake swimming, boating, hiking and mountain bike trails.
Other nearby outdoor attractions include: Williamstown MA, The Taconic Crest Trail, Jiminy Peak Resort, Hancock Shaker Village, and Mt. Greylock.

2000 foot elevation in the Heldeberg Mountains.
500 million years ago during the Devonian Period this was a sea, so we live in shale based mountains with lots of fossils! The Heldebergs are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, these mountains have been worn down to 2000 feet over time.
Native Americans lived in the area many years ago and we are quite sure this was Native American sacred ceremony land.
Hiking, canoeing, swimming and fishing (catch & release only) are available on site.
There are many places to hike in the area, an Eagle Trail
and in winter, 2 miles away, is a Nature Preserve that rents snowshoes and has
trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing,
Very rural and private, even though we are only 25 miles SW of Albany, NY the capital of NYS, here it is quiet and peaceful.

Our slice of paradise consists of 225 acres of forested land nestled in the foothills of the Catskills near Albany. We are a homestead and small campground devoted to the principles of organic farming and self-reliance. Modern agriculture and big business are unsustainable, destroying farmland at an accelerating pace. It is important for us to teach the next generation, there is an alternative. We produce much of our own food. We have friendly goats, chickens, ducks, peacocks, donkeys and horses the guests can pet and feed. There are no swimming holes on our property, but many waterfalls and swimming spots within a short drive (see list below). A quick 5 minute drive will get you to one of the best disc golf courses in the north east. For the truly adventurous, Clarksville Cave is a short drive away. Visit their website for list of proper gear and rules. We do rent some of the equipment needed.

According to a few sources we've consulted, the Mohican people (Eastern Algonquian family of tribes - not to be confused with the Mohawk, a distinctly different tribe) were the indigenous occupants of the land where our farm is now located. Historians note that the name Mohican is from the indigenous word meaning "water that flows in two directions." Most Mohicans were driven into western NY and Canada when the Revolutionary War broke out.
Local history indicates that the first white occupants to build here were the Hawley Family, in 1790. Parts of the farmhouse date to this era. Outbuildings were added through the decades and centuries, and the land was used as a dairy farm, among other ventures, by previous owners.
We purchased the property in 2021 in hopes of providing more space, nature and outdoor living for our two little ones. We have two fields dedicated to Christmas trees, as well as apple, pear and cherry trees, and we've had successful garlic harvests to share with neighbors, family, friends, and at local farmers' markets. We have been the caretakers of this land and cabin since 2015, when we bought it from the builder of the modest cabin on-site, Steve.

There is a spring-fed 55 gallon reservoir of potable water that will slowly refill as well.
Though not far off the road, there is very little car traffic, and the surroundings are very peaceful. The din of the running stream is a constant, while the sounds of coyotes and owls can be heard at night. As the name indicates, the east-facing hillside is often witness to incredible moonrises, and the stars are always bright.
Nearby Attractions:
The Beer Diviner small-scale brewery and taproom is a stone's throw away from the parking area with a selection of tasty beer and some food options available. In addition to regular hours, there are special summer events, and live music every Saturday night.
Cherry Plain State Park is a 'less-traveled' state park and campground just 3.5 miles up the road, offering lake swimming, boating, hiking and mountain bike trails.
Other nearby outdoor attractions include: Williamstown MA, The Taconic Crest Trail, Jiminy Peak Resort, Hancock Shaker Village, and Mt. Greylock.

500 million years ago during the Devonian Period this was a sea, so we live in shale based mountains with lots of fossils! The Heldebergs are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, these mountains have been worn down to 2000 feet over time.
Native Americans lived in the area many years ago and we are quite sure this was Native American sacred ceremony land.
Hiking, canoeing, swimming and fishing (catch & release only) are available on site.
There are many places to hike in the area, an Eagle Trail
and in winter, 2 miles away, is a Nature Preserve that rents snowshoes and has
trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing,

I had great stay in the snow- cabin has everything you need. One minor setback: my honda fit couldn't make it up the hill! In the winter make sure you have snow tires or 4WD

Excellent get-away experience. Exactly as described, put together by folks who are very practically-minded and resourceful. Total peace and privacy with very good comfort in primitive setting. Wood stove was key to cold winter nights, plenty of heating capacity to spare. Gas mantle lights are very nice touch as well.

Brought my girlfriend here as a little surprise trip for her bday and she absolutely loved it!! I was a little nervous about the weather but it ended up being so cozy inside the Yurt with the snowfall outside. Such a nice and relaxing stay with wonderful hosts that accommodates to all of your needs. Was so relieving to be able to pack nice and light and just hangout. We had everything we needed! Awesome hosts and a an awesome place. Ed made sure we had plenty of wood the entire time and was always available if we needed anything!

This was my second time staying here and it was just as delightful as the first! The camper is cozy, clean, and well-equipped and the outhouse situation is even better now. A lovely spot to make a fire and hang out under the stars.

I do wish that the site photos were a little more specific to the site and was able to make out the differences a little but easier before booking, but the site we ended choosing was perfect.
The portapotty was close by and very clean
Definitely considering the same site again or even one of the bigger ones in the future (will be returning for the annual Sheep and Wool festival hopefully!)
or even coming back in warmer weather to enjoy the animals and property more.

This cabin was set up so well. It was a short stay overnight for me, but I would definitely recommend it for a longer stay.

1 night at Dickensen Farm: Cabins & Camping
Only stayed for a quick night in our way up to Maine. But it was easy to find and a cute location! Cabin gets chilly (no insulation) but manageable with a good sleeping bag. Loved playing with the farm dogs, and the eggs were delicious!

What a great trip! The cabin was wonderful with the wood stove and such a great history there. The property was VERY secluded and quiet, a great pond for the dog to jump in, horses right in the meadow, and great trails right off rhe edge of the yard. A+ trip and hosts, well def be back!
