This is a 3rd generation "Family Farm" of a different sort I suppose. Seems there's a bit of everything here, and arguably not enough of anything. At least for conventional farming. So we've learned to do things a bit differently.Our main crop is wine and juice grapes since our topography, climate, and soil type makes it a premier location for that. But with 30+ acres of forested hillsides, low ground, and natural areas we've evolved into a mixed farm and forest enterprise. Our goal is to utilize the productivity of all our property while still retaining the basic character and usefulness of the wild areas. Letting each thing be what it wants to be and does best on it's own. Flow, not force.So our year starts early with tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Plus there's grape trimming about this time as well. When the forest floor starts to green up a bit later, we start digging Ramps, or Wild Leeks in the woods. Most of these will go to the more trendy Chicago restaurants, but we also have some local sales. Next comes inoculating winter-cut logs with Shiitake spawn for next years mushroom production. This year we also conducted a few hands-on workshop seminars on mushroom growing as well. Then it's on to our raised bed herb & veggie gardens. (Fresh herbs are just so much fun to cook with!) We grow enough for our own yearly use, as well as some for direct sales. Summer keeps us busy tending all the different crops here and trying to keep up. But there's that steady progression of fresh veggies to eat. Yum !!! Fall brings our annual Grape U-Pick in September and October. And we try to time related crops like mums, pumpkins, and gourds for this same time frame. Makes the place a bit more interesting. Late fall is when we bring in firewood to heat the house and workshop. Stacks of wood everywhere. Hopefully before the 1st snow. In winter it's time to fire up the woodworking shop and be a bit creative. Build furniture, equipment maintenance, who knows what next years projects will include. I like to keep everybody guessing.So, that's what goes on here. You're welcome to check it out, lend a hand, relax back at camp, walk the vineyards and/or forest, or just breathe and relax. That's up to you. But I would recommend visiting a few of the fine local wineries. Seems there's a festival going on at one or another of them just about every weekend. Good music, good wine, good times. And there's the Lake Michigan beaches a few miles down the road.Yeah, this is a pretty casual place here, love meeting new people, very open to civil discussions of all sorts.However, rude, ill mannered people will probably enjoy staying elsewhere. The property was originally owned by a family name Nichols (thus the name of the lake). It was handed down to the sons who each owned half the property. The driveway down the middle of property that leads to the lake was originally a fence line that divided the two pieces of property. The brothers did not get along and their are several stories of their warring on how to maintain the property.My parents bought this piece of property in 1964 and created a camp called "Lakeside Farm Camp", a small all boys camp. The camp has gone through several changes since then but has always been owned by the Edwards family. In 1984 the name was changed to "Cedar Lodge" a coed camp that specializes in English horseback riding and offering high level general camp activities. Enjoy the peace and quiet of our totally private fresh water lake. Take your boat out for a day of fishing or just chill next to the fire. Sites are approximately 50 feet from each other. If you want privacy we suggest you book both.

LARGE GROUPS - We are hosting events! Graduation parties, small weddings, family reunions, you name it. You can rent the whole campground for a day a night, a weekend, or a whole week if that suits your need. Just send us a message and we can talk about it. We can also accommodate large groups at a single campsite or you can rent several of them. Our primary guideline is that if your event will be held while other campers are here, it cannot disturb them. So, consider renting the whole campground.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please plan to arrive and set up camp between 3 and 9 PM. If you are planning to arrive after 9 PM, please send us a message letting us know. We decide on a case by case basis since we prefer not to have late arrivals. In any event we do not accept arrivals after 11 PM except in an emergency since many campers and your host may have already gone to bed.
Overview:
Our beautiful 10 acre farm and homestead is situated between Ann Arbor and Dexter not far from the Huron River. The 5 acre area where our campsites are located is wooded with mature oak, maple, walnut, elm, and white pine trees. We're isolated and surrounded by wild areas and natural farm land but just a 10 minute drive to restaurants, groceries, fuel, and other amenities. The Ann Arbor area is home to a huge array of world class events from the Ark music venue to National Champions Michigan home football games and a whole lot more. Downtown Ann Arbor or Dexter or Chelsea is only a 15 minute car drive. White Lotus Farms, which has a wonderful farm market on Saturdays from 9 - 2 and Wednesdays from 9 - 1, is a 10 minute walk down our dirt road. If you forget to bring something that you need, don't hesitate to ask! We've got a growing number of camping essentials for rent or sale for very reasonable prices that can make your stay even more enjoyable: from bug repellants to camp chairs, potable water in 2.5 - 5 gallon containers, and more.
NEW IN 2025 we have installed a hose with potable water near the entrance to the campground for your convenience.

This is a very delicate area near a local watershed source, Deer Creek, wetlands on property, and also fruit tree farm in it's early stages, organic strawberries, and organic raspberries growing as well. Also with all of the fruit tree plantings, parking is limited to one to two vehicles inside property at site, other vehicles can park along the drive on M32. We are located along the North Country Trail and only a few blocks from their office as well as a 10 min drive from the Kent county youth fairgrounds. 25 minutes to Ionia fairgrounds

We have a toilet at the Creekside campsite, but no potable water. There is firewood available for purchase at each site.
We pride ourselves on our biodiversity, especially of birds and insects, and therefore maintain serval large wetlands and do not use chemical treatments in our campsites or woods. However, this means you should be prepared for a significant number of mosquitoes.

While the farm is sprawling, there are multiple houses across the property so stay on established trails only and keep your noise levels down. This is a working farm, so you may occasionally see trucks or tractors. Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan.
Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers.
Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. The cabins have access to the pond, use of the canoe, a private fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill and privy. Inside the cabins is a functional kitchen with dishes, flatware, pots and pans, so you can prepare meals onsite. Cabins also have table and chairs as well soft chairs/sofa sitting area, bookshelves with a variety of books, board games and puzzles, and covered porch in case of rain.
Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, or ski right out the door.
One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. The property is on the North Country Trail, just over a Noquemanon Trail Network Forestville trailhead where access to year round recreation awaits. Hogback Mountain is just up the trail from the cabin with spectacular views of forest, mountains and lake superior.
We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs.
However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

There's a grocery store, numerous cheese shops, and a variety of party stores and restaurants. For the outdoor enthusiasts, don't miss out on going to the ever-famous "Northwoods Wholesale Outlet". Also nearby is the "Saganing Eagles Landing Casino" in Standish. We have resided here for over 30 years and can assist you in many ways to get the most out of your visit.
By the way, the definition of the word "Elysium" is "Place of perfect bliss" and yes, we labeled it that long before the movie with Matt Damon was created.

This is a return visit to Big Oak Camp for me; I loved the site so much, I went back a second time in the same season! All the things I loved about Big Oak Camp the first time around remain true. It's a really pretty site that's priced very generously and that is very accessible and convenient from Ann Arbor. For being so close to Ann Arbor, the feeling of being all alone out in the woods is very good. There is good isolation from the residence as well as other camp sites on the property. It's a nice big site with lots of placement opportunities for even the biggest tents. It's fairly flat but has a slight overall grade just so it drains well. And it does drain well! This visit was after a few days of pretty heavy rains and the site was very usable and had dried out nicely. The quality of firewood provided by the host for fee is very good and there is lots of smaller forage wood around the campsite to help you get the fire started (and enough tree cover that you will be able to find some that's reasonably dry even after a strong rain a few days prior). Although I'm sure the cooler late summer temperatures helped, the site was fairly devoid of mosquitoes even when damp. And I easily kept busy all weekend with all the nearby outdoor rec opportunities! Caitlin was a great host and pretty hands off but easy to get in touch with if I needed her. Looking forward to returning many more times

There is so much livestock to visit and we saw turtles and a snake. The covered picnic table is great and there is a covered dishwashing station as well. The bathroom was kept nice.
There were kayaks and canoes to borrow, be sure you go under the covered bridge down the river, it is gorgeous back there.
The covered picnic table and bathroom area are somewhat close to an Airbnb, but there is a large privacy fence between the two rentals.

We stayed here for one night and definitely would have stayed many more. Loved tent camping in the pine tree forest, the fire pit, and seeing some amazing stars. Would definitely come back and also would recommend it highly to anyone else.

Camp Moonshadow was exactly what I was looking for! Just my dog and I wanted a fun labor day weekend up near Sleeping Bear Dunes, the camp was nearby the national lakeshore and a close drive to some of the small towns I wanted to check out. The outdoor shower was such a great amenity, and I met a few super nice campers at their communal fire pit. My favorite thing was setting up camp between the rows of pine trees, it was so picturesque. Will recommend to others!

Carl has a beautiful piece of land and some really lovely, private, and well-maintained campsites. He was there to greet us upon arrival and answer any questions we had, and being able to purchase firewood and rent a charcoal grill on site made the trip seamless! We loved the Hickory Hollow site and waking up to nature in the morning, and the many trails available to walk the property. Definitely recommend.

Campsite was nice, very close to the beaches, and was peaceful. Showers were great, fire pit was nice, it took me a while to get it lit after a night of rain, but it all worked out!
I called Robb asking how to sign in, he called me within 10 minutes and was very nice and helpful.
Downside… it was not fun hauling our stuff up to our camp site from the parking. I pulled my car up as close as possible by the loading station whenever we were getting ready to leave to make it easier for ourselves.
All in all it was really nice weekend and our dogs had the time of their life!

Really enjoyed camping at a place that we can just enjoy the sounds of nature. It was a blessing to have the outdoor kitchen and the shower. It made our time there so much more pleasant. Hopefully this will be the first of many staying at Camp Moonshadow!

Andy was super helpful upon arrival, very kind and accommodating! There’s a dog, Hazel, on site who is happy and playful as can be. The trails were short and all lead back to the same spot basically, which felt safe and easy to navigate — all in all it perfect for walking around with my dog and the site in general was just located in a great spot! I’ll definitely be back!!!

Hi! I stayed here a couple weekends ago and finally got a chance to sit down and write a review. This is a LOVELY campground.
They are so accommodating. It's perfect if what you need is an awesome, quiet nature spot. Darkness and beautiful stars. Trees for lazy hammocks, which we loved. I loved that it was semi-primitive. At one point I spied my teenage girls and what were they doing? Cartwheels. Flips. Chasing our dog around. No phones. Just enjoying nature. We also visited Sasha Farm Sanctuary, a couple minutes drive down the road. We loved this whole beautiful area so much. Manchester is full of trees and it's gorgeous. We spent an afternoon visiting Ann Arbor as well. My family said they want to repeat that entire trip. Our campsite had a way of feeling like home. We look forward to coming back! 💖🏕🌠🦋🌈

Where to go
Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula is Michigan’s wild toupée, with swathes of old-growth forests, sandy beaches, and inland lakes stretching along the southern shore of Lake Superior. This is the spot to escape the crowds, whether pitching your tent by the sand dunes in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, parking your RV by a waterfall in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, or yurt camping in the Porcupine Mountains. Northern Lower Peninsula
Bordered by Lake Michigan to the West and Lake Huron to the east, the northern Lower Peninsula has the highest concentration of Michigan state parks. Miles of mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking trails await in the Huron National Forest, where you can choose from modern campgrounds or backcountry camping. Along the coast, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a must-see, Wilderness State Park is a dark sky reserve, and Ludington State Park Beach is a family favorite.
Southwest Michigan
Grand Rapids is the gateway to Michigan’s southwest, where the shore of Lake Michigan provides plenty of options for a summer camping trip. Lakefront cities such as South Haven, Benton Harbor, and Holland have sandy beaches, historic lighthouses, and seafront campgrounds. Forget tent camping in the wilderness—RV sites come equipped with full hookups, playgrounds, and watercraft rentals.
Southeast Michigan
Michigan's "Thumb" juts out along the west shore of Lake Huron, where Sleeper State Park and Port Crescent State Park are the big draws for campers. Below this, the west coast is ideal for a road trip, peppered with shipwreck dive sites, secluded beaches, and golf courses. South of Detroit and Lake St. Clair, Sterling State Park is the only state park on the shore of Lake Erie, with a mix of RV and tent sites by the beach.
