This is a 3rd generation "Family Farm" of a different sort I suppose. Seems there's a bit of everything here, and arguably not enough of anything. At least for conventional farming. So we've learned to do things a bit differently. Our main crop is wine and juice grapes since our topography, climate, and soil type makes it a premier location for that. But with 30+ acres of forested hillsides, low ground, and natural areas we've evolved into a mixed farm and forest enterprise. Our goal is to utilize the productivity of all our property while still retaining the basic character and usefulness of the wild areas. Letting each thing be what it wants to be and does best on it's own. Flow, not force. So our year starts early with tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Plus there's grape trimming about this time as well. When the forest floor starts to green up a bit later, we start digging Ramps, or Wild Leeks in the woods. Most of these will go to the more trendy Chicago restaurants, but we also have some local sales. Next comes inoculating winter-cut logs with Shiitake spawn for next years mushroom production. This year we also conducted a few hands-on workshop seminars on mushroom growing as well. Then it's on to our raised bed herb & veggie gardens. (Fresh herbs are just so much fun to cook with!) We grow enough for our own yearly use, as well as some for direct sales.  Summer keeps us busy tending all the different crops here and trying to keep up. But there's that steady progression of fresh veggies to eat. Yum !!!  Fall brings our annual Grape U-Pick in September and October. And we try to time related crops like mums, pumpkins, and gourds for this same time frame. Makes the place a bit more interesting. Late fall is when we bring in firewood to heat the house and workshop. Stacks of wood everywhere. Hopefully before the 1st snow.  In winter it's time to fire up the woodworking shop and be a bit creative. Build furniture, equipment maintenance, who knows what next years projects will include. I like to keep everybody guessing. So, that's what goes on here. You're welcome to check it out, lend a hand, relax back at camp, walk the vineyards and/or forest, or just breathe and relax. That's up to you. But I would recommend visiting a few of the fine local wineries. Seems there's a festival going on at one or another of them just about every weekend. Good music, good wine, good times. And there's the Lake Michigan beaches a few miles down the road. Yeah, this is a pretty casual place here, love meeting new people, very open to civil discussions of all sorts. However, rude, ill mannered people will probably enjoy staying elsewhere. Just say'n.

Perfect Fall Getaway
This it’s has so many amenities and I think I used them all. John is a kind soul, checked on us daily. We had some less than ideal weather (high winds and rain) but still had a fantastic time here. We loved exploring the land. Feeling secluded even though there were two other groups staying on property. I loved how close this site was to the port-a-potty. We also were able to park step away from where we set up camp which was super convenient when needing electricity in the morning to grind coffee beans (I have outlets in my SUV). My group was already talking about making this an annual thing.

Quick one night stay.
John’s campsite was great! We stayed in the corner space, there are two others but they are out of sight. The site itself had plenty of furniture and room for tents. There was a fire pit and some wood to get started - John has additional wood for sale right on site too! There is a nice outhouse nearby that’s clean and even has a light at night. There are a lot of wineries and breweries nearby, I highly recommend checking them out. 10/10 would love to come back in the summer!

Tent camping on edge of grape field
We had an excellent time tent camping on Johns land. We were in the woods on the edge of the vineyard. It was very quiet and secluded. We live in Chicago so having quiet "alone" time in the woods helped us relax from our home chaos. John is incredibly friendly, helpful and we had great conversations with him. The site was perfect. It was also a good jumping off point for going to the beach dunes, wineries, breweries and hiking. We will be back.

Camping at the vineyard
I spent a long weekend on John’s vineyard with my boyfriend and dog Sunny. We had such an amazing time. The land was beautiful, and John was incredibly welcoming and friendly. We were able to walk through the vines and forage grapes. He let us into his beautiful garden and pick tomato’s and herbs for our dinner. The location is perfect and so close to local wineries and antique shops. We had a wonderful time and the perfect experience.

Fall camping paradise!
This was our second time camping at John’s vineyard! It was absolutely lovely in the fall. The grapes are in season and the temperatures were perfect! As last time, John’s camp sites were in tip top condition! There was an amazing orchard right down the street where we picked apples and made some skillet apple crumble over the campfire. (Deeeelicious!) My boyfriend, dog and I had a wonderful time! We’ll be back :)

This place is absolutely incredible. The site was set up perfectly. The kitchen space is fully equipped with everything but a stove. Such a joy cooking things from the garden that we picked that day. Plenty of fire wood to gather nearby if you don't want to buy more than provided. Enjoyed walking the little trail. Stars at night were lovely. I like to do a pros and cons list with my reviews and the only con I can think of is that you can hear some road noise. But you're probably not going to care. This place is great!

Perfect camping among the grapes!
Fantastic spot! John was a pleasure and gave us foraging rights for the garden and grapes on site. It was so nice here. Practically glamping with the workstation, HUGE grill, and plenty of seating and table space. Plus, it’s 15 min at most to anywhere, eg St. Joes, and so many vineyards and cideries within a few miles. Will be back!

Beauty and Solitude
John is truly salt of the earth and the camp site is nothing short of perfection. We stayed at the vineyard location, tucked back in the woods at the end of the vineyard. If we had forgotten anything, it wouldn’t have mattered because John has thought of everything. The site has a wonder fire pit , firewood, chairs, Adirondacks, a grill, a grate that can make the fire pit a grill. You have your own out house. You can also forage their garden, the ancho chilies made a great addition to our baked potatoes. I am so glad we found this spot and we will be back! Thanks so much John!

John was so welcoming! We had the best time and will definitely be back. The camp sites are spacious, secluded, and well appointed. We where grateful for the camp kitchen, fire grate for cooking, chairs, tiki torcnes, night lights in the bathroom, & trails! We wandered the garden & vineyards under the moonlight. There was plentiful firewood & anything we needed John had ready. From the gorgeous setting to the yummy grapes - our visit was perfect. Thank you, John!

As always, John is an excellent host with a prime camp site. We loved introducing our friends to the vineyard, cooking up a delicious dinner over the fire (with a well-appointed out-door kitchen setup) and then snacking on grapes for breakfast. Can't wait for our next trip. Thanks John!

We had a great time at John's campsite. The site was large and pretty, tucked into the trees which provided a lot of shade and privacy. We appreciated the dog friendliness. The only negative was that he needed to spray the nearby orchard during our visit. John was a friendly, attentive and entertaining host, would visit again.

Very special stay! John has put a lot of effort into the many thoughtful touches that make this stay so enjoyable. An outdoor kitchen setup with charcoal grill, full counter and a “take something/leave something” bin, along with a fire pit and tons of seating make the stay very comfortable. Beautiful scene, quiet and safe. Highly recommend!
