The Haven

The Haven is lovely! We especially loved the dock with space to sit and enjoy the water. Kay was an excellent host. Highly recommend!

We loved this place for its view and river access and beautiful twinkle lights on the community deck and listening to wildlife (despite some teens nearby who began loud sleepover vibes near their car parked right near us by the river, instead of at their own campsite, starting after midnight until well after 2am - we didn’t want to wake up the host, our choice, but it speaks to the layout a bit) - so while this view was AMAZING this site feels a little ‘in the way’ of the kayak launch and other amenities by the river. We could have arranged our setup a little differently but two cars for two other sites were parked in the trees next to our site so we joined them, and then camped a little closer to the kayak launch than maybe was necessary (?), but this site is in a bit of a walkway area from other sites to the community amenities… also, this site lists a picnic table but ours was way over behind the community garbage cans and not something we could easily use as part of our setup (we could have sat on it anytime for a meal, but we’d have to cart our stuff back & forth each time, not really use it to keep stuff on during our trip, as it was out of sight). So it’d be great if we had camped a bit more in the trees, it might have felt less awkward (+ if there was a picnic table there it’d have been great!) But we made a little privacy cove with our two small cars and it worked fine! This site is truly gorgeous tho, so maybe if you strategize your setup it’ll be great!

Quiet and relaxing

Beautiful riverside location. Very quiet. Firewood was provided. Host is very gracious and even gives you a small bucket of camping favors, like all the fixings for S’mores. Steep short drop from the bottom of the paved driveway to the campsites. There are 2 pathways down for your vehicle: one is straight but steeper, the other is less steep but narrower and makes a fairly sharp turn through the wooded area that would give a long RV trouble. Once down by the river, all the campsites are flat. Solar lights come on at night and add charm to the covered dock and chairs. Beautiful view of the St Joseph River, a few hundred feet wide at that point and deep Good access for kayaks.

Nice location but unexpectedly loud

First and foremost, the host and property were lovely. What complaints we had were mostly things reasonably beyond the host's control. It's a beautiful location and our site was spacious. There was free firewood (though most of it was very green), kayaks available for rent, and sufficient trash cans. Kat even provided little buckets of s'mores ingredients. Unfortunately, the sound carries down the river from the nearby highway, which becomes very noticeable at night. Also there were several rude boaters out after midnight with very loud engines. While the sites are spread out a reasonable amount, the sound of late-night Wonderwall covers and spontaneous animal impressions does carry so if the other campers decide to be inconsiderate, you're pretty much out of luck. There's lots of shade for relaxing in the heat of the day. A bit buggy, which is to be expected near water. Mosquito spray is a must. I noticed some poison ivy and stinging nettle around the edges of the mowed areas, so if you take kids just keep a close eye on them. The shared dock is a nice feature, though a swim ladder would be a good addition.

Kat was a wonderful host and has a lovely piece of riverfront property. We camped right on the river bank and enjoyed watching all the wildlife (beavers, eagles, fish, turtles, birds, etc) go by. There were other campers on the property too, but we all had plenty of space and never ran into each other. The property is quiet, well maintained, and flat (plenty of good places to pitch your tent). We'll definitely be returning.

Very kind and helpful hosts, with a nice private camping area. We stayed in the mini camper, and it was a great experience! We loved that they offered kayaking, cornhole, and a communal dock and firepit area right on the water. Even had complimentary firewood (note: not as dry as store bought, so a bit harder to catch) and smores ingredients.

Great Little Spot for the Weekend

What a great little spot to camp for the weekend. I loved waking up and having a view of the river and the woods on the other side. Kat provided everything we needed, including a s'mores kit! Our site was far enough away from the other sites that we had privacy. This campsite was great for peace and quiet and space to get away with our little dog.
