Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Botanica Retreat is a project of the Bioregional Conservancy and Reclamation Trust (BCRT), a registered educational not for profit organization dedicated to the Integration of Light and Land, healing assisted by the kingdoms of nature. Coming into a sense of harmony with one Self and others. De-stressing and relaxation are the first steps to healing any dis-ease. You are invited to play, stroll and relax in the meadows and northern forest lands of this 90 acre property. Enjoy a walk along the pond, the brook or the Medicine Wheel. The land offers a food forest of fruit, nut and sugar trees with gardens of wild edibles and medicinal plants. Botanica offers tent sites, yurts/yomes and RV spots (without hook up's). Indoor and outdoor bathroom facilities and showers are available. We host a communal camp fire if desired, and a hot drink at breakfast. We are a project in progress, turning a run-down potato farm to an aspiring center for education and planetary healing. Currently, we are recovering the farm house and adjacent structures with the generous assistance of a group of volunteers and we are endeavoring to bring the soil on the land back to life by making the land accessible to a nearby regenerative farmer. Yurts are furnished & linens are all included. Each individual yurt has its own solar shower just outside. Non-potable water, eco-friendly soaps and shampoo are provided at no charge. The bathroom consists of a clean “two holer” for those of you more comfortable with one another, outhouse, toilet paper provided. It’s a 5 minute walk to Wolph Pond where you’ll find some of the best Large Mouth Bass fishing in Maine. You’ll also catch Crappie, Bluegill and Sunfish if you prefer. We only allow catch & release fishing & ask that you bend the barbs on the fish hooks for the safety of the fish. Feel free to enjoy a paddle in one of our complimentary canoes or get in a leg workout with a paddle boat. Life vests are provided & must be worn at all times if you’re in one of the boats. Inquire about fishing gear rentals if you don’t have any or forgot to bring it. Ample parking provided & solar lights will guide you to your yurt. There are three units in total so if there are other guests occupying other units please be respectful and courteous. Some of the amenities are shared such as the communal fire pit, outhouse and boats. So just bring your food and drinking water and whatever else you may need and let us take care of the rest. Again, we ask that you be respectful of the land and to your neighbors and please leave the property as you found it(or there abouts).

Nestled in a pristine natural setting, Hermit Island Campground offers a unique camping experience that has captivated generations since its establishment in 1952. This rustic retreat remains largely unchanged, providing a slow-paced atmosphere that harmonizes with the surrounding environment. With 271 distinct campsites located on the southern end of the island, each site offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. Weekend Trip to Four Acre Woods Island Campground

My son (age 12) and I have been to Four Acre Woods for the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. The first year we tent camped and this year we stayed in the yurt. The campground is very small, which we like and each site is unique. Lots of amenities for such a small campground, they really think of the little things that keeps camping comfortable. The yurt was wonderful and the campsite has everything you need (we brought too much stuff). Just bring yourself, clothes, and food and you are good to go. We are fairly local, so it is a great weekend getaway, but we don't really explore the area when camping. If you want to experience the downeast Maine coast away from the more touristy spots, this is where you want to go.

Weekend Trip to Four Acre Woods Island Campground

We loved staying in the yurt! It was perfectly private, adorable, and we were surprised by the incredibly comfortable beds. This was the perfect size for our family of 5. The community room was warm (literally had a wood stove going at 6am!), stocked with coffee and hot chocolate, and hosts and the space alike were welcoming and helpful.

2 nights at Four Acre Woods Island Campground

We had a great two night stay at Four Acre Woods Campground. We stayed in the yurt, which we found cozy and perfect for our needs. The site itself was well appointed with two hammocks, a cute fire pit and plenty of seating around the campfire area. Our group loved the little community center for coffee in the morning, it was easy to purchase dry wood to burn (across from site) and we all felt like the bathrooms were clean and a short walk away.

Weekend Trip to Four Acre Woods Island Campground

Caleb's yurt was a pleasure to stay in. We arrived to find a well lit campground, equipped with a gas grill, was station and firepit. The yurt was nothing short of luxurious with all the amenities. The wood stove we found packed and ready for ignition. Definitely coming back to this great, tidy campground

We didn’t end up staying at the yurt, but I don’t seem to be able to leave a review on the tiny house we stayed at. There ended up being some electrical problems with the yurt so we were given some options and ended up staying at Calebs tiny house in Stonington. It was so lovely and just the perfect space, beautiful view, and very accommodating. Would stay at the tiny house again and will definitely try to stay at the yurt another time. I Was also pleasantly surprised that four acres stay open so late into the season. Overall easy and welcoming stay, would recommend either the airbnb or campground just because the host are so nice.
