Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special. So— Welcome Home. Peaceful Blueberry Yurt

7. Peaceful Blueberry Yurt

11mi from Blue Hill · 1 site
For the months of May and September, we offer our off-grid yurt. Fueled by propane (for wall lamps and cooking) and supported by on-demand, generator-powered well water, the yurt stays warm and cozy in all weather. Kindly leave the yurt clean and ready for the next guests. Please strip the beds and place your sheets and towels in the “coffee table” storage box. Sweep the floors and vacuum the rug so the next guests can easily make up their beds. Please dispose of all trash in the bins at the shed—much appreciated. Directions to the Blueberry Yurt: Take Pioneer Farm Way for 3/4 of a mile off Bayside Rd. in Ellsworth. We are at driveway #162 on your left, which leads through a small field and into the woods. Drive to the very top of the driveway, past the outhouse and large rock, onto the wood chips where a path leads off to the left up a small incline to the blue yurt. The door will be open; the key is inside. Do not mistake the smaller green yurt for the blue one. For use of the fire pit, please collect your own wood and do not use cordwood for outdoor fires. New laws regarding outdoor fire size have been in effect in Maine since October 2023. The Hancock County fire regulations require you to obey any fire bans when in effect. Please visit: https://mainefireweather.org/ (Deer Isle, Blue Hill, Ellsworth) Please be mindful that you are close to a residential neighborhood. Fire restrictions are strictly enforced when in effect. Thank you.

Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

8. Arbor Camp Acadia Cabins/Treehouses

13mi from Blue Hill · 3 sites
Arbor Camp is a collection of thoughtfully designed cabins and treehouses set on 30 private acres in the Maine woods offering a secluded forest retreat on the Union River—private and peaceful, yet just minutes from the shops, restaurants, and year-round charm of downtown Ellsworth. Located 30 minutes north of Acadia National Park, it’s an ideal base for exploring the mountains, woods, lakes, and rugged shoreline that define Downeast Maine. With nearly half a mile of river frontage, a stream, and over a mile of hand-cut walking trails, Arbor Camp’s thirty acres provide ample space to unwind without leaving the grounds. Two cabins and a treehouse sit in an open field with wide views of the river and its passing wildlife. The remaining treehouses are thoughtfully spaced across 25 acres of quiet forest, offering privacy and a sense of deep immersion in the trees. Many enjoy filtered river views through the canopy. Each season brings its own pleasures: temperate summer days and cool, starlit evenings; fall foliage and crisp air; the stillness of snow-covered woods in winter; and, in spring, a quiet reawakening as color and life return to the forest. Arbor Camp began in 2022, when three friends came together to build a quiet place in the woods. Thirty acres along the Union River in Ellsworth offered the space—and the inspiration—for something lasting. The project was shaped by Maine’s camp tradition: simple, seasonal dwellings that invite stillness, comfort, and connection to the land. We followed the path of an old roadbed to guide our layout, preserving as many trees as possible. Cabins and treehouses are spaced for privacy and quiet, and walking trails were cut by hand to follow the natural shape of the land. Wildlife is part of daily life here. Songbirds call from the canopy. Heron and eagles pass overhead. Deer move through the understory, and turkeys wander the clearings. Mushrooms—chanterelles, black trumpets, and others—rise through the forest floor in season. From the start, the idea was simple: to create a place that feels good to step into. Each of us brought different experiences—design, building, creative work—but shared a clear vision: spaces that are well made, deeply comfortable, and in tune with their surroundings.
