One of the valleys last original stone homes dating back to 1845. We have been restoring the buildings made from the stone. The main house which is not yet finished has beautiful etched glass windows of the cattle drives.
James Hinds the homesteader and original owner of the ranch created the ware and hinds ditch which supplies our abundant Valley water. He was a prominent attorney and got our water rights given to us forever from President Harrison.
Currently, the ranch is running on an open range policy. Livestock is not fenced in, so please be cautious and understand that you are camping at your own risk. Please do not feed the animals (even though they are friendly they can get rambunctious) and keep all dogs on leash at ALL times.
It includes water that extends to the middle of the Colorado River and the one mile of our shoreline. Everyday that we live here we give thanks for his wisdom and foresight. Winter camping experience/equipment and a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle with severe snow-rated tires and chains may be required to access the yurt Oct-April. The Ute Lodge was homesteaded in the 1930’s by Joe Fox who after leaving the military came west to settle in the White River valley.
Joe was known for his friendliness, hospitality and wild stories.
Today you might find much of the same. From Joe’s day to today it is a place where families come together to get away.
The Ute Lodge is now owned by Karl and Mona Maser who celebrated 20 years of ownership summer of 2019!
All summer our cabins are filled with guests from all over the US as well as international travelers. Weekend Trip to Gondola Village at Holy Cross
We had a wonderful stay at Gondola Village - would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a unique backcountry adventure. The hike in was beautiful and enjoyable - about 3 miles, taking us around 3 hours because we took our time, soaked in the scenery, and chatted with a few friendly hikers along the way. There were plenty of opportunities to collect and filter water from the creeks, so we realized that carrying 2–3 liters each from the trailhead wasn’t really necessary.
Once we arrived, the area felt peaceful and remote. We enjoyed exploring the remnants of Holy Cross City, visiting Cleveland Lake, and filtering water from the nearby streams. We brought all of our own gear, but it was nice to find the hut well stocked with useful supplies, and the outdoor shower was a great bonus after a day of hiking.
One tip for future guests: when you arrive, open the windows and screens for a few minutes to let the moths out before settling in. Once it gets dark, keeping the lights off helps avoid attracting more. The views from the hut are absolutely incredible and made for a memorable place to relax.
The only unexpected part of our trip was being awakened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday by a group on ATVs, but otherwise it was remarkably quiet. We only encountered a couple of small groups at Cleveland Lake… on our hike out, which took us about 2 hours, we didn’t see another person until we reached the parking lot.
This was a fantastic and unique experience-we enjoyed our time!!!

Ginger’s place was excellent and even better than the pictures showed! The views were incredible and the inside was bigger than expected. I loved the outdoor shower. The bathroom situation is unique- I’ve never used a dry toilet before. The stars at night were super bright. Definitely recommend screenshotting her instructions on how to get to the property once you lose cell service but the instructions are very accurate. I purchased one of the hand made cards to send home which was a nice touch. The location is really close to Basalt but you feel like you’re the only one on the mountain. We used it as home base to go between Aspen and Carbondale. Would love to visit again.

My family adored the Aspen Yurt. We had to change camping plans last minute due to an injury, and once we found this location, we were sold. Our vacation was not canceled, just happily adapted. Aspen Yurt was everything we wanted, and it was so beautiful. Roomy enough for a grown family of 4. The outdoor freshwater tub was a hit, along with the beautiful outdoor shower. Great memories were made.

Brandon is a class act, and he's got a great spot for a fair price. He really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and to ensure that we were having a good time.
Note that we didn't stay at the roadside spot specified in our reservation. Instead, he (very generously) offered to let us use a more secluded site next to his own trailer. (But my understanding is that this spot won't be available for other guests in the near future.). What I saw of the roadside spot: the road isn't very busy, and it doesn't have shade (not a problem if your trailer has AC, but ours doesn't).
While not fancy, the spots are plenty comfortable, with well-functioning utilities. They provided an extremely convenient staging ground for our activities around Glenwood.
Brandon also has a PhD-level knowledge of smoking meat. His brisket is a work of god-damn art. Like seriously, the most delicious brisket I've ever had. It changed my life.

What can I say? My 2 night tent stay was perfect! Warm greeting by Scott, one of the owners, that included a walk through the property, info on happenings in town, and help with campsite selection. Laurie made sure to shake my hand and ensure I've got everything as well. First things after tent and hammock setup was taking an outdoor shower with a view (!). What an experience. Hair and bodywash as well as towels were provided. And if preferred, you could take a shower indoors. The community area also featured generous space to lounge on rocking chairs, play games (provided), or stock up on coffee/tea, water, and ice (honor system). As a single female traveler I felt safe at all times, and the lights along the paths and the outdoor kitchen created a wonderful atmosphere. Expect to wake up when the rooster does and watch a gorgeous sunrise from your tent site or after a very brief walk to an opening of the property. This has something for everyone: cottages, buses, tent sites, and portable toilets that are super clean. Everything is taken care of, and Laurie & Scott are always just a text away if anything is needed. I was on a motorcycle and tent camping: but this felt like glamping! Would definitely recommend staying here when in Paonia. You are just a hip away from downtown and overlooking the valley. It's a gorgeous space...!

This is an absolutely lovely place to camp! The whole property is gorgeous. The campsite is surrounded by tall grass which gives a nice sense of privacy, and the bushes in the back were absolutely swarming with hummingbirds! The creek is just a small trek away, and the pond is a short walk up the hill.
Karl and Mona are spectacular hosts; they were so friendly and quick to help when we realized we forgot an essential item. We stayed over Fourth of July weekend and they hosted a July 3rd potluck, which was a great way to bring everyone together. We had an amazing time overall, and can't wait to return!
