This site was amazing!! The walk to the bathroom isn’t half bad (and the bathroom was extremely clean!!), it was pretty secluded and not far from the lake! Will definitely be coming back to this amazing place! Super cool to see the animals and give them a few treats and bonus points for the sweet ranch dog Kyro!

Beautiful location, extremely quiet and peaceful, a perfect place to kick back in a hammock with a book. Easy to locate, can park right by the campsite, and the tent is quite comfortable. There are a lot of wineries tucked away here but make sure you do a wine tasting with Aaron -- he's making really great and interesting natural wines and ciders that take advantage of the unique location. There are some absolutely gorgeous rivers nearby so if you're visiting in the symmer, make time to take a dip in the Columnes. We really enjoyed our brief stay.

Weekend Trip to Wisdom eco-preserv

Stayed in the Serentity cabin and it was so nice. It was quiet and comfy with pretty much everything you would need is provided. Comfy beds, kitchen stuff and a wood stove for keeping warm. The shower and bathroom at the main house were definitely a huge plus after a dusty summer hike. I would stay here again for sure!

Beautiful site. Peaceful, private and quiet. We strolled around and enjoyed the view from the hills. We saw quail, ducks, and a blue heron at the pond. And heard frogs and owls at night. Perfect big dipper skies. Akhi and the other farm folks were super friendly and helped us get situated.

Such a beautiful setting! Perfect for a camping/nature getaway without dozens of other campers around if you were to camp at a public site. Chris and Rebecca were so welcoming and full of local recommendations, but we still felt like we had the quiet we were looking for.

Weekend Trip to Ascension Ranch

Wow this place is breathtaking. Incredible views, an hour away from civilization and some very welcoming and friendly staff. We took advantage of the trails, lake swimming and general camping fun. The crew also brought over their horses for us to pet and one night their guard dog came over to enjoy our company and get some ear scratches. Sadly there was a fire ban, so no campfire. Must know: -the directions sent are so detailed. Follow them and you shouldn’t get lost (like we did). We also found a hand painted sign by the restrooms that had a helpful map of each campsite. -plan your bathroom trips. Yea there is a flush toilet. But it was a bit of a walk from our site (3-5 minute) and there was only one toilet since the second had an out of order sign. -double check supplies and gear because you are pretty far from stores/gas stations. We learned later the crew offers trail rides with the horses, there are geese, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cat, the whole McDonald song to check out, and really friendly people that work here. Every interaction started and ended with huge smiles and they were so helpful. Oh!! And most importantly, they were SO fast with digital questions. Within 5 minutes there was a detailed and clear answer to any and every question we had before and during our trip. If you come here, you won’t regret it and we cannot wait for our next trip here!

Weekend Trip to Starry Hot Tub/Cold Plunge Glamping

We had a really lovely time on Ellie and Jack’s land, the yurt stay was perfect! It was secluded and peaceful while still being so close to Nevada City. Perfect for a Yuba River weekend! We loved the amenities too, the hot tub and cold plunge were excellent and we really appreciate the touch of being provided robes and slippers. Thank you so much!

This campsite was well kept, small and quaint. We loved that it was not a huge campground filled with tons of people. The showers and bathroom was very clean (for a campground). :) The owner was super nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The highlight of our trip was the access to the American River. It was a short walk down hill, but when we got there, it was SO nice. We brought our shade, drinks, chairs...etc. and enjoy sitting on the river for hours! We watched all the river rafting boats go by and my son loved every bit!

Weekend Trip to Sunset Vista Farm

First off, we had an amazing time staying on Jerry's property and he definitely earned the 5 star rating. However, we ran into an issue that I have not seen stated anywhere else, and this isn't at the fault of Jerry. At about 5am we were awoken by the sound of at least 3, maybe 5, different roosters all crowing at each other, for 3 straight hours, nonstop. This isn't a hypobole, we were lucky to get 10 seconds of silence in-between crowing, they were very persistent, and very loud. It was not something we could sleep through. Their crowing would also attract peacocks and dogs to join in as well. I don't know if they aren't usually there or what but it was impossible to sleep, I had earplugs that didn't help and my fiance tried to sleep in the car but I'm not kidding when I say 3 straight hours of constant, loud, crowing. Had we planned to get up to see the sunrise this would not have been an issue, but we stayed up late completely unaware to what was to come. And once again, this isn't anyone's fault, but I feel that it needs to be disclosed. Everything else about the stay was great, the views were great, the sunset was great, the stars were great, the bathroom was doable, easy access to water, plenty of places to sit or eat, campfire was nice, plenty of space and it also felt private. Jerry was incredibly nice and even gave me a jump when my car battery died, he went above and beyond and I highly recommend.

My husband, our dogs and I loved this spot. It was a perfect escape from the city and the dogs absolutely loved the freedom. Jerry was absolutely amazing and very very considerate. He had water hooked up directly to the site, a fire extinguisher, tables, chairs, and a cute creek! When we arrived he came to introduce himself and gave us the lay of the land. He was very clear with camp fire instructions and how to be safe with it! We will definitely be coming back to this site. 10/10 would recommend. Thank you for being amazing Jerry!

I have owned this property since 1999. It was built in 1953. Penn Valley is so named because this is where the pens were that they brought the cattle to sort and ship to Sacramento for auction. This property was the lodging area and still has one old bunkhouse, which is a current rental. It has the oldest, largest in ground pool left in Nevada County. The water rights have been with this property for over 80 years so sprinklers run all summer. We have great well water for the house and our campers. I currently breed stock dogs, and Dexter cattle here and ride and train horses. I have ridden and trained horses for over 50 years. It is a pretty active place with lots of work and coming and going. We do chores at about 8 am. Horses frogs and dogs are majority of disturbances. It is close to everything but in a very small community. No lodging near though. The horticulture here is very old, some originally brought from England. Most of it is let grow natural. There are two coffee houses nearby, Honey and Cream and Crazy 4 Yogurt. It is a 30 minute drive to the river. It is a 15 minute drive to historic Nevada City and beautiful downtown Grass Valley with wonderful shopping, local bars and both fine and casual dining. Empire Mine is a an exquisite park and historical site only 10 min away. Spenceville Wildlife Refuge is a great day adventure also. Guests are welcome to watch us work horses and take care of animals. We have 4 barn cats too. Things run pretty old school here still and casual. If you like a long walk it is 2.5 miles down the dirt road to Oregon Creek and the middle fork of the Yuba. Driving takes 5 to 10 mins. The other direction is the largest lake in our county Bullards Bar Reservoir and Emerald Cove Marina. We are 1 mile down Marysville Rd. from a launch called dark day. There is a trailhead at the top of overflow boat parking for a public swimming hole on the lake. On our property, we have a main house with its own private facilities such as a kitchen, shower, and bath. On the land, we have 9 total unique cabin and canvas tent structures converted into boutique-like campsites. We have an epic outdoor entertaining kitchen and patio with an outdoor pizza oven and a little dog rinse behind the outdoor shower. The bathhouse is right across the way and provides a private but shared guest shower house, tub and sink. The sauna and fenced-in dog area are near the shipping container site. The sauna has just been remodelled with a shower and bathtub right outside the sauna house. Like anywhere in the woods there is an hour at sunset when you may have mosquitoes down near the sites in the spring and some of the summers depending on the year. We have a natural spray for that or fans in the kitchen. Off the path, you may find poison oak in the thick of the woods. So please stay on the marked trails.

Welcome to Homestead Hideaway, an off-grid home site adjacent to the Tahoe National Forest. A mile and a half down a dirt road and 20 minutes to downtown Nevada City. Easy access to the Yuba River, Scotts Flat Lake, world class mountain biking trails, and rock climbing off Bowman lake road. Homestead Hideaway is a six acres of secluded forest living. Its home to an array of wildlife including owls, foxes, bears, coyote and dear as well as an abundance of trees and flora. The property is also our home. We, along with our dogs, live in the green Quonset hut that you will drive past on your way in. We steward the land and live simply to reduce our impact on this wild place. At 3,600ft and amongst the trees, you can expect much milder temperatures than in Nevada City- making for a pleasant respite during the heat of summer. Little Dear Creek is a 5 minute walk and has bathtub size pools to soak in. The yurt was made locally by Living Intent Yurt Co and installed in 2021. Inside you will find two twin beds that can be combined to make a king, a giant pillow lounge, dining table, games, and some tableware for eating and drinking. Attached to the yurt is a large heptagonal deck perfect for lounging and yoga. On the deck there is a foot-pump sink for handwashing and dishes, a counter for cooking and a propane BBQ. There is no electricity or traditional running water and plumbing. Expect a rustic camping experience with the luxury of a new yurt to stay in. This means no electricity, no shower and a simple compost toilet in an outhouse. There will be a 55 gallon drum full of water for the foot-pump sink to wash your hands and dishes. Pack out your trash and leave food scraps in the compost.

For this reason, we ask all campers to be mindful about storing food and disposing of trash in the provided bins. The ranch is comprised of the camping lawns, camping facilities, several homes on the property (two Air BnB and the owner's home) and the motorcycle workshop. Car and RV campers are welcomed and there is plenty of car/RV parking on the asphalt lot outside the fence at the East Side of the property near the mailboxes at the intersection of Rte 4 and Brice Station Road.

Between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe in California, and at the junction of highways 49 and 50, Placerville offers plenty of reasons for visitors to linger. With the South Fork of the American River, the Eldorado National Forest, and numerous lakes, reservoirs, and trails nearby, the historic mining town is well placed for outdoor adventures, particularly on the water and in the forest. Plenty of riverside, lakeside, and forest service campsites let you stay close to the water and woods for both tent camping and RV camping.

Where to go

Placerville and El Dorado National Forest

Placerville camping options include RV parks near town, plus more than 50 campsites in the Eldorado National Forest. For river rafting and camping, head to the American River and Coloma, where gold was first discovered in California, or try the Sly Park Recreation Area, a hub for family fishing and water recreation thanks to group campsites. Other lakeside and riverside options include Valley Reservoir, Ice House Reservoir, Bear River Reservoir, Loon Lake, Cosumnes River, and the Rubicon River. Or head into the Desolation Wilderness for solitude, adventure, and backcountry camping.

Lake Tahoe and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

Just over an hour northeast of Placerville, several scenic campgrounds can be found around South Lake Tahoe, at Emerald Bay State Park, D.L. Bliss State Park, and Fallen Leaf Lake. Head to the north and western lakeshores to camp in the Tahoe State Recreation Area, William Kent Campground, Kaspian Campground, and Lake Forest Campground. South of Lake Tahoe, several scenic campgrounds sit near Hope Valley and around the Kirkwood area.

Sacramento and Jackson Region

Near Sacramento, campers can stay by the water at Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma, or further south near the Sacramento River at Sandy Beach Regional Park and Brannan Island State Recreation Area. Near Jackson, Lake Amador and Pardee Recreation Area offer camping and fishing, while Camanche Lake and New Hogan Lake are known for camping and watersports. Several RV parks can be found nearby, while the Auburn State Recreation Area is a good spot for primitive camping.

Summer is the most popular time for outdoor adventures and camping around Placerville, especially at the many area rivers and lakes. The fishing season runs from April to November, with trout fishing best in spring, and bass in summer.
