Walden Ranch

2 sites · Tents300 acres · Linden, CA
Walden Ranch began with the purchase of a neighboring 20 acres. Couple that with the inspiration of Thoreau's lines and life at the real Walden Pond, the ranch has grown to nearly 300 acres and the small ranch pond has grown to a 5-acre lake with a 3-acre forest and home. Scouts, family and church groups use the site for gatherings. Available are canoes, bonfire, and exploring the ranch's 300-head cattle, llamas, poultry and wildlife. Pitch your tent in a forest setting alongside a lake on a working cattle ranch. Watch wildlife or hike to smaller lakes on the ranch. Other animals include dogs, llamas, geese, chickens, and  horses. The ranch is within a 20 minute drive to either Stockton or Lodi, CA and is surrounded by vineyards, orchards and pastures.  Outdoor flush toilets, sink, tables and fire ring available. Forested area is set amidst grazing lands.  This "Walden" even has willow trees slipped from Walden Pond, MA. Owner looks forward to sharing this peaceful, special spot!

Cosumnes River Somerset Camp

9 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents23 acres · Somerset, CA
This land was home to the Miwok, then European and Chinese miners, then a cattle rancher. It was also home to a former nun who quit the dominican order to purchase this land for inner city kids to have a chance to ride, swim, hike and fish. We moved here in 2017 and purchased this land with the main goal to raise our large family here, but we have found that good things must be shared! There is NOTHING like being in the wilderness of this area for a good re-centering of the soul! We have found it to be a true blessing for our family, and we hope you can experience this blessing as we share this space with you. We feel certain you will not be disappointed with this beautiful river canyon. Our property is situated right on the middle fork cosumnes river. We have 2 sleeping cabins and several tent sites (can be rented separately). The cabins offer a rustic/minimalist type vibe - bring your own bedding/pillows to sleep on the comfy futon. A table and chairs are provided for the cabins. Tent sites have a wood table (bring your camp chairs) and a fire pit when the season is open for burning. The swimming is awesome and the stars at night will put you into a state of awe! Many family owned wineries in the area, most of them offering free tasting. It’s a short drive to Tahoe and the Marshall gold discovery site as well as the historic hangtown Placerville. The recent Caldor Fire was VERY close to our property and a back burn was initiated nearby the cabins. It is still as beautiful as ever but please know there are lots of slash piles. Falling trees and burned up stump holes are also a risk and it is presumed campers will be cautious and use at their own risk. Please don't hesitate to shoot us a message if you have any questions!

The best camping near New Hogan Lake guide

Overview

About

With a warm, arid climate and summer temperatures smashing 90 degrees, New Hogan Lake has 50 miles of shoreline that provide welcome relief and extend eight miles (like the ones your gramps used to walk every day) upstream to the north and south forks of the Calaveras River.

The lake has become a popular boating destination with ramps around the perimeter and plenty of water skiing, wake boarding and jet skiing opportunities. It’s also a primo spot for year-round fishing with with bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie and stripers to catch. Heck, the fish aren’t even the most exotic animals in the area. The foothills are home to grey fox, mountain lion, bobcat, rattlesnake and bald eagles that vacay during the winter months. Cruise the south shore for designated wildlife viewing area. Other activities including camping, hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

When to go

The ideal time to visit New Hogan Lake is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer brings warm temperatures perfect for water activities, while winter may be less ideal due to cooler weather and reduced services.

Know before you go

  • Be aware of local wildlife and follow guidelines to keep both you and the animals safe.
  • Some areas may have limited accessibility, so plan accordingly if you require special accommodations.
