Miles of biking paths run on the road right by where we are situated and there is a nearby river rafting company if you want the white water experience. Most of our campers are road tripping, getting away from LA, or are looking for a stopover on their way to/from Yosemite, Sequoia, Joshua Tree, etc. We are in a desert climate – cold in the winter and hot in the summer. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. Be sure to know and abide by the laws.** Our friendly cancellation policies vary between 24 hours for simple campsites and 72 hours for our Glamp sites and Group sites. 1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. Located in a spectacular mountain setting just 90 miles north of Los Angeles, Pine Mountain Club is a residential community in the Los Padres National Forest. Relax & unwind while surrounded by acres of old forests that shelter an array of flora & fauna, including the rare California Condor. This gambrel cabin was one of the original homes built in PMC in 1976. The 70s vibe is still alive with cork floors, shag rugs, wood paneling, record players, an 8-track player & an orange Malm fireplace. The space Our 1970s chalet-style gambrel cabin is located at an altitude of 5500 feet above sea level. Both bedrooms are equipped with organic latex mattresses (queen downstairs, full upstairs) and ROKU smart TVs. There is also a TV with basic cable, a VHS player, and classic video games in the living room downstairs. Upstairs we have a projector for watching movies on a big screen. The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator, oven/stove, Nespresso machine with milk frother, blender, waffle maker and fondue pot. We have board games, puzzles, records, 8-track cassettes, VHS tapes, a projector (for VHS or streaming movies), a guitar, keyboard, and a working fireplace. Towels and linens are provided. The washer and dryer cannot be used by guests, but there is a laundromat in the village and another in Frazier Park. Keep in mind this is not a hotel, this is a privately owned cabin in the middle of a National Forest. The water may take a little longer to heat up, the electric heaters might smell a little dusty the first time they are turned on after a long summer, spiders might rebuild their webs less than 24 hours after the space is cleaned, there may be dirt on the outdoor furniture, you might need to wear insect repellant in the summer or shovel the driveway and deck in the winter. If you are looking for a luxury hotel, this is not it, but if you want a fun, comfortable getaway in the mountains, please submit a booking inquiry. You are expected to complete a checkout checklist which includes washing your dishes and putting them away where you found them, making sure all wall heaters are off, etc. Guest access You'll be in walking distance of the PMC Clubhouse which houses a restaurant, bar, recreation room, community swimming pool and hot tub (SUMMER ONLY), tennis courts, and a golf course. If you'd like to use the pool, please send names of all guests so I can register you in advance. There is a fee of $5 per person, per day, for the temporary pool passes to be paid at the pro shop on pickup. We're also close to hiking trails and the village where you'll find the Pine Mountain General Store, Bear Claw Bakery, The Perch, gift shops, and more. During the WINTER months, there is a chance of snow and/or ice on the roads. You will need 4WD/AWD or tire chains on hand. The CA Highway Patrol is often checking cars before allowing access. You may also need to show confirmation of your reservation. We have a snow shovel on the deck in case you need to shovel the driveway or deck. Parking on the street is not allowed. We've had several guests say they grew up on the East coast and know how to drive in snow, only to comment about the curvy, icy road into the forest which is no joke! Even if you are prepared, someone in front of you might not be, so have warm clothes or blankets in the car, a full tank of gas, and some snacks in case you get stuck. Other things to note There is an outdoor security camera on the property. The cabin is not in the middle of nowhere, we have neighbors on all sides. Please be respectful. The wi-fi is pretty reliable but as we are in a rural area, it can be slow and it does go out from time to time. If you absolutely must have internet access guaranteed, this may not be the place for you. No shoes in the house Rules The two overriding rules are 1) Leave the home the way you found it and 2) Respect the privacy and quiet of our neighbors. - NO SHOES IN THE HOUSE - Please do not rearrange the furniture. Use coasters on wood surfaces! Be gentle with everything - most items are vintage. - Basic cleaning up after yourself is expected, including washing your dishes and putting them away. - Trash and recycling must be taken to the transfer site when you check out. - We provide a checkout checklist so you remember to turn all heaters off, lock doors and windows, etc. - Commercial photography/filming is not allowed without permission. Please send details in advance and we will get back to you with the rates for your project. - No outdoor fires of any kind - Quiet hours in PMC are 10pm - 7am - Smoking allowed outside ONLY. No food or trash should be left outside the cabin unattended. All doors and windows need to be closed if you're not in the room. There is an air horn in the downstairs bedroom closet, and whistles near the sliding glass door. If you see a bear, make a lot of noise to scare it away. - Missing items will be deducted from your deposit plus a $50 service fee per item. - NO fireworks or guns of any kind (including BB and paintball) - No parking on the street. Weekend Trip to A Unique Mountain Retreat

I had a lovely time with my dog on John’s beautiful property. We absolutely loved the beautiful views from the cabin. John was beyond kind and accommodating, especially when I had an emergency and had to leave a day early. He helped me to make sure that everything was OK and I have already received my refund for the day that I had to leave early, which was beyond generous I can’t wait to go back to the cabin with my whole family again soon.

2 nights at Lone Juniper Ranch

We loved staying at The Bobcat cabin. It was very relaxing and quiet, a beautiful landscape. I highly recommend to stay here a night or 2 to wind down. The cabin had everything you’ll need, just bring your food. Be aware the 2 cabins are close together. There was a llama enclosure a few feet away, it was lovely to look at and watch the animals from the cabin. The hosts are responsive and nice. Thank you for this wonderful experience, we plan to be back.

Weekend Trip to Peaceful Mountain Cabin

It was even more magical than I imagined! Definitely coming back! Gigi was an excellent host, it was the piece I was seeking and in the starry night by the fire pit, you can’t miss! I wish I would’ve had more time to check out her more of her animals, but her sweet dogs and chickens came to visit every day.

Weekend Trip to Cuyama Badlands

Songdog Ranch is one of my favorite places to be. It is close enough to the city to not feel completely isolated, but far enough to do the best stargazing you have done in your life. My mom is not a camper and she was already talking about coming back. My dad wants to try the larger cabin and my 12 year old son loves it here. It's hard to get him interested in something that does not have wifi. The mattresses in the glabin were INSANELY COMFORTABLE. I will come back to this beautiful place.

9 nights at North Fork Ranch (Horses Welcome)

This home couldn’t have been more perfect for our family of 6. Beautiful location. Kids had a blast exploring. Watching local wildlife and catching lizards and frogs. Hosts were absolutely fantastic. 10/10 and hope to be back!

Weekend Trip to The Squattage in the Sequoia National Forest!

The Squattage was great to stay at and James and Diane were amazing hosts. We were nervous about the heat but the Squattage was equipped with an AC unit and fans. Definitely recommend if you're looking to get away from for a bit.

Surreal place! We arrived at night for stargazing and couldn't ask for more for the money. Shooting stars, milky way all in quite and privacy. The host is a very friendly guy! Bonus: lots of quails running around the farm :)

If quiet, peace and relaxation is what you are looking for, you will find it here at the elevation of 5500 feet in beautiful Tehachapi mountains. I can’t say enough how much we enjoy staying in the Studio cabin. This is a good place for stargazing in the fresh mountain air. We love it here, John has made his property a wonderful getaway,

The environment and animals were beautiful, the cabin and its cleanliness were perfect. We traveled the whole month in the USA and this was the most beautiful accommodation. Ample layout inside and outside, AC is great, really basic kitchen things, the BBQ made so much sense for cooking outside based on hot it gets! The dart board was a great experience for us. The seating arrangements were not lacking! I enjoyed the variety.

1 night at North Fork Ranch (Horses Welcome)

The cabin sits on the hosts' property but is fully fenced in, giving you your own private little retreat. Loved the outdoor space. It has a cozy fire pit, lounge chairs, and the perfect setup for enjoying the cool evening air and stargazing after the sun goes down. Inside, the cabin has everything you need for a relaxing getaway. The queen bed was incredibly comfortable, and loved that it even had a heated blanket for the cooler months. There's also an adorable fireplace that made the space feel extra cozy. We visited during the summer, so we didn't get to use it, but it would be the perfect place to curl up during the winter. The kitchen was thoughtfully stocked with all the essentials, and we had no problem cooking a delicious dinner during our stay. The shower had great water pressure and plenty of hot water, always a nice bonus after spending time outdoors. Overall, this was such a lovely little getaway. The host was incredibly kind and you could tell they genuinely cared about creating a great experience for their guests. Would absolutely recommend this spot to anyone looking for a peaceful escape that's still conveniently close to LA.

John has crafted a truly beautiful little wood cabin with incredible mountain views and peaceful seclusion. We enjoyed hillside strolls with the dogs, stunning starry nights, and the electric fire pit was a welcome addition to the ambience in a place where outdoor wood fire pits are often prohibited.

Weekend Trip to Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

The Playhouse was exceptional. For my first Hipcamp experience, this was a beautiful get away with a great overall experience from John. The quiet atmosphere combined with the beauty of the surrounding nature truly was breathtaking.

Riverside RV #2- This site has its own private propane click on fire pit, river views and close parking.

Weekend Trip to Okihi- Reimagining The Kern River

We had an amazing time camping here. The property was quiet, lots of land to roam around, and the river was close by! Katherine was very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. Everything was just as expected, and we felt comfortable the whole time. We’d absolutely come back!

2 nights at A-Frame Bliss

Jessica’s cozy cabin was great for a writing retreat. The kitchen had everything I needed and the fireplace was an excellent touch to wind down each night. I was unable to get the upstairs AC to work, so it was a little warm at night because the heat rises in the A-frame, but other than that there were no hang-ups in the trip. Pine Mountain is such a quaint little area and I left feeling refreshed. Would recommend the waterfall hike and the Bear Claw Bakery.
