People have found arrowheads, stone beads and grinding stones on the land. We offer various types of camping sites, as well as a teepee - so please read each listing for specific amenity and location information. We sell firewood on site. The amount and variety of wildlife is astonishing, with bear, deer, turkeys, fox, coyote, bobcat, Eagles, River otter, salmon and steelhead, with a wide variety of songbirds during migration. Easy access from road, close to town, tall oak trees, privacy, creek with salmon within a five minute walk, mountains, wildlife, barn owl nest box. Please note that during late summer, creek does not flow on surface but always has swimming holes where the salmon and steelhead wait for Fall rains to carry them down to the Eel river and eventually to the ocean, until they return as adults to spawn again. Guests love staying here: "Elderberry camp was really great! It was a large site, plenty of space, shade, and parking. Very peaceful and good distance between other sites although we were pretty much the only campers out there. Outhouse was clean and there was drinking water. We spent most of our Saturday in Eel River which was great. The water was perfect for swimming and fishing, our husbands caught some big ones. Creek color, level, and clarity vary depending on season! The creek is visible from some sites, but not all. Lounge on redwood decks, picnic under the trees, play on the worlds biggest home made giant cylinder chimes in the sound garden or explore the surrounding fruit trees and lush forest paths, tire swings, or a game of horse shoes. Peaceful spot, easy driving instructions and responsive host. Well groomed campsite areas (creekside 1/2) felt safe and comfortable. My cell service was spotty and needed to travel about 5-10min out to get all services available but that’s ok, it’s camping. The view of the stars and moon were clear, the fire pit and toilet were very nice to have. The care taker was pleasant and accommodating

Elderberry Camp was a nice and secluded stay. We essentially had the entire place to ourselves. Elderberry camp is the furthest away from the other 2 sites on that side of the property, but also note that it is the closest to the road. There isn’t enough traffic for it to be a problem in my opinion but if you are a light sleeper, it may affect you. Unfortunately, the creek was also dry during our stay. However, the foggy nights brought in nice moisture/frost that burned off by 11am. Another plus was the clean outhouse. Thanks, Stephen!

We loved our two nights at Stephen’s property. The stars at night were unmatched and even though the creek didn’t have water during this time of year, my pup and I still had fun walking it and checking for cool rocks. He directed us to Eel River and we had an amazing swim and picnic as well. 10/10

Stephen was a good host, and we appreciated his hospitality during our Labor Day weekend stay. The property was comfortable, and he was very responsive whenever we reached out. There was a large group staying nearby with three small dogs that barked throughout the day, which made it a little less peaceful than we had hoped. However, Stephen promptly addressed the situation on our behalf, which was appreciated but did little to quiet the dogs unfortunately. He also provided firewood and helpful directions to the nearby river, which—even with the lower summer water levels—was a nice spot to enjoy.

My friends and I had a blast here! While we never met Thomas during our stay, Lars and Wild Man took great care of us and made sure we were situated and had what we needed. Lars walked us all the way to the Hole in the Wall, which was really kind and he’s a great tour guide. Garden Side is a great spot for a group. It does get a lot of sun and gets toasty so bring some sun protection! This camp spot was queer and tripping friendly. We felt really welcome and the vibes were so relaxed. Just make sure if you’re coming in an RV or sprinter that you confirm the width of your vehicle. The bridge is tight, I barely cleared it in my sprinter van. This spot represents what hip camp is all about & I will absolutely come back!

This was our second time here and it’s always a wonderful time. Absolutely beautiful, perfect sun, wildlife and very relaxing. The outhouse is clean and being able to have a fire made all the difference for the full camping experience! Stephen was extremely prompt with his responses.

This is a great campground. If you are potentially last-minute camping or camping solo it is a small campground with the owner on site super friendly. The access to bathrooms. Freshwater and showers was great if you were looking for something a little more secluded, it might not be so great because even though there is privacy, you do hear the highway, but great location and access to amazing private Creek and beach with a short walk Looking forward to coming back soon!! This camping spot was perfect for a 3 day weekend getaway! I loved how fresh the air is out there, and how peaceful it is at night. It had an amazing spring water shower, which was perfect for me since I like to be fresh for each day. The famous Hole in the Wall was just steps away, and offered a quiet sanctuary for meditation and cold plunge swimming! The water was clear and clean. The people running the camp were very helpful and super kind. I would definitely recommend this place for its location, atmosphere, and serenity.

Our campsite was well maintained with a great platform to place our tent on. The hosts are friendly and welcoming. Dog friendly and kid friendly (great swings and worlds largest wind chimes). Running water and hot shower!

We have such a great time camping at this spot. It is right next to a beautiful gorge with a river you can swim in. Easy access to Eel River, just a quick drive away. The hosts were very friendly and the showers and potable water made the experience even better. There were a lot of bees when food was out but they weren’t too bad. Love this place and will be back!

I loved this property! We stayed at creekside 2, and felt that location was the most isolated. This was important to us because we had a protective dog with us, so staying away from other people and/or other pets that may be there was very important. That said, it should be noted this is the furthest away from the drinkable water on site and the outhouse. The property was incredibly clean, maintained, beautiful, peaceful, and quiet. Stephen here on hip camp was incredibly attentive and responsive. At the ranch, Monica was very friendly and came by to check on each campsite and answer questions. This was a great place to be, and I would come here again. Highly recommend this campground, and this exact location on the grounds.

Truly enjoyed our stay here and chatting with our Steve, our host. The campground are was very nice and level. We were at Bridge View and had a table, deck and lounger, all in very good condition. The outdoor shower was nice, easy to use after a quick lesson. All of the amenities and common areas were in great shape and well thought out. The Hole in the Wall trail is a short walk from the camp site then is a short walk to the actual site. Very cool to see. The water was a little too cold for us to wade in but we enjoyed the area. Short drive to the Chandelier Tree is a must. The little town of Leggett has a nice market and the drive to Layton offers EV chargers, markets, shops and restaurants.

Overall, the trip was great! Lars was extremely nice and attentive and the river/swimming holes were beautiful! The campsites were a little bit closer together than I was anticipating, but it really wasn’t that big of a deal. The only thing that was really an issue was that there was a tent already set up at the overlook site, but the zipper to the cloth outer door was broken and the screen was completely ripped apart. We had no way to keep out the swarming mosquitos or the bees, so we ended up sleeping in the back of the Jeep 2/3 nights. We tried to duct tape it, but that came apart pretty quickly. They are getting a new tent though, and I think that’s the best one of all the sites, so I’d recommend just making sure they have the new tent set up before you plan to stay at the overlook site.

We loved tent camping on Stephen’s land! His directions were easy to follow and everything about the camp was very well maintained. The creek was dried up but I was not surprised with the time of year. But we followed Stephen’s directions to Eel River and hung out on the bridge under Hearst Bridge all day and it was perfect! It was amazing being able to have a fire and a picnic table being provided. If I were to camp here again, I would camp in Creekside #2, it was a little more private and more morning shade! Our tents were so hot by 8am. We luckily had the space to ourselves but I think I would have been pretty disappointed if another group was in Creekside #2 as these spots are very close together, best choice would be to bring friends and book both #1 and #2! I’ll definitely return and maybe during spring and hope that the creek is running!
