Double Bear is a rugged three yurt glamping escape in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a secluded setting on a 1.5 mile mountain dirt road among towering redwoods with sweeping views, just 30 minutes from Silicon Valley. It is designed for those who appreciate quiet beauty, a touch of adventure, and the feeling of being truly off the map without being far from it.
Our camp features three sleeping yurts, a spacious shared kitchen yurt, and a bathhouse, all thoughtfully placed to let the landscape take center stage. The yurts, up to 30 feet in diameter, offer a unique sense of space and comfort in a natural setting. Soak in the hot tub beneath the trees, enjoy dinner on the pavilion terrace, gather around the fire, or wander the woods at your own pace.
Privacy
Up the hill sits a separate art house that is occasionally rented, while the owner lives about 10 minutes down the road and is available if needed. You also have the option to book the entire camp, three yurts with 16 plus beds, along with the kitchen yurt and bathhouse, for your group.

The land is steep, rugged, and spans 83 acres of private forest. You are free to explore and discover hidden corners of the property. You may come across some remarkable surprises along the way. Getting around takes effort, and that is part of the experience.

Double Bear is about a 30 minute drive from Los Gatos. The final stretch is a 1.2 mile drive up a steep dirt road, crossing Bear Creek and winding through the mountains. The road is suitable for 2WD vehicles, just be comfortable driving on dirt roads.

A separate building—a yellow 10-foot shipping container—serves as the bathroom and includes a flushing toilet, sink, hot shower, and laundry facilities.

If you'd rather sleep in a tent, there are plenty of flat areas where you can pitch one. One of the sites on the hill even has its own electrical outlet. The stage can also double as an elevated tent platform.

Located an hour drive from the bay area, Camp Cruz is a year-round glamping retreat in the redwoods ideal for people who want a private outdoor getaway in the forest without giving up basic living comforts. It's a perfect destination to unwind, recharge, and create special memories in nature. We are also only 30 minutes from Monterey/Santa Cruz for guests who want to enjoy the beaches and coastal cities. We offer guests 2 private bedrooms: the Raven’s Nest (an aircrete dome) and the Owl’s Nest (a yurt). Larger groups are welcome, and should bring camping gear such as tents and sleeping bags for extra people. We have plenty of great camping spots!
There is a fully equipped kitchen with stove, fridge, barbecue grill, electric coffee maker, tables and chairs, and more. The kitchen also has a ping pong table. There is a large geodome furnished as a game room with couches, a lounge area, pool table, foosball table, a bluetooth speaker, games, and music equipment. There are clean composting toilets, hot showers, a wood-burning fire pit, heaters for the cold, a hammock bungalow, a meditation pagoda, a deck overlooking a creek, and disc golf baskets. Guests are responsible for bringing their own firewood or may purchase firewood from us under "EXTRAS". With a fair balance of sunlight and shade, we have a garden and lots of open space to spread out and relax. Free wifi is available. We run a nonprofit outdoor education camp for underprivileged youth, so your stay supports our work to get youth outdoors.
Winter lodging....
It can get seasonably cold in the Santa Cruz Mountains during the winter. If visiting in the winter, rest assured we have everything covered to enjoy your stay. We have propane heaters for warmth and comfort. If the power goes out, we have a standby generator that will power up camp provided we are home to turn it on. We have woodstoves in the Owl's Nest and Eagle's Nest. We provide fire starters for the woodstoves; guests are responsible for bringing firewood to keep the woodstoves going or purcchasing it from us under "EXTRAS".

Both our treehouse and yurt listings are unique experiences. They both are adjacent to the Tierra Madre Vineyard Block and have awesome views of the entire Monterey Bay/Pacific Ocean. We are located on 44 acres high atop the Santa Cruz Mountains but close to all the major beaches and Silicon Valley. Please be aware this is camping in nature, along with squirrels, spiders, falling leaves, etc. and nature is not always for everyone. There is a 45ft. ladder to climb to get into the treehouse. The view at sunset is spectacular.

We acquired the property in 1991, shortly after the Lexington Fire (1985) and Loma Prieta earthquake (1989). At that time, the entire property has degenerated into disrepair, and all the vineyards had been overwhelmed by the wilderness.
In 2011, we started the herculean effort of clearing away the wilderness, resurrecting all the vineyards and renovating our home. In 2014, we started replanting the vineyards, and opened our tree house to visitors in 2015.
Just like us, I think you will fall in love with this property, and enjoy every minute of your time here.

The Family Yurt was a pleasant stay, nicely sized, and well appointed. My brother and I stayed here for six days and enjoyed the welcoming space and well kept surroundings. The beds are comfy and it was nice to wake up to the sound of birds and breeze through the trees.
There are two yurts and the bathroom close to the Family Yurt, so you will hear other people if those spots are occupied.
I would recommend staying here, just make sure you have a high enough clearance vehicle to get in. A crossover, SUV, or truck would probably be fine. The main parking lot has a very aggressively angled driveway transitioning from the main drive. We had issues in our Corolla with both traction and ground clearance getting up the driveway. Filling in the transition with some 2x4s to worked ok to avoid damaging the car.

Weekend Trip to Double Bear
I loved Double Bear. Mathilda was a super host answering all my questions in advance and then checking- in to ask if we needed anything. The Yurt Bear Hollow was spectacular. So clean! Everything impeccable! Same for bathrooms and kitchen. The dirt road is challenging first, but doable and after we did a trip to a state park and came back, it felt so much easier the second time. It is a small price to pay to be so close to Los Gatos but so immersed in the wilderness. This place has the perfect balance of rustic setting but with all the basic comforts that makes a quick weekend trip easy or a long term comfortable. The wifi worked very well. We enjoyed the fire pit and the jacuzzi. It was my first time in the area so we travelled to Big Basin state park but it is still impacted from the last fire so we went to Henry Cowell state park which was much nicer. I am recommending this place to all my friends and I hope I can come back soon. Next time, I would like to bring a great book and hang out more in the property and explore the creek. Such a great place to just relax and be.

What a magical place! So much space to explore, our 4 year old had a blast, as did the adults! Fun little details all around, and at night there are solar powered candles and colored lights that pop up all over. We slept in the yurt and cabin, as well as a tent we set up in the meadow. Beds were very comfy! Odin is a great communicator and went above and beyond to make sure we were well taken care of. Highly recommend!

The directions to the address were very clear and easy to navigate (especially since you’ll probably lose service) Bridgette greeted us upon arrival and left us some recommendations of where to spend our time in Santa Cruz. The yurt was homey and we enjoyed our time with our banana slug neighbors!!

Super unique, fun, secluded and whimsical hideout in the forest! The drive is long and winding but worthwhile; you really feel like you’re deep within the woods while not being far from Aptos. Beds are comfortable, and site is so fun to explore! Would be perfect for a big group camping trip or a family - there is a projector you can connect to a computer and watch movies in between two redwoods, which is an excellent touch. WiFi signal is strong if that matters to you, and host was responsive and helpful! Would definitely stay here again :-)

Had a lovely time at the yurt, it was very relaxing and they provided everything necessary for a great stay :) The location was a bit hard to find, don't trust Google, but once there I was able to unwind; their neighbors were friendly and welcoming and it was a wonderful place to walk with my dogs. My favorite thing in the yurt was the CDs and CD player, for whatever reason it made me so happy to just put a CD on :)!
I would very much like to go back and am so thankful that they are so dog friendly!

My friends and I had a a great time staying at Double Bear! As we had a large group, we could rent out the entire property and it was super private. We could just hang out together and relax surrounded by nature. Mathilda was also very accommodating and even came up to the site in person to help check on a small issue we had. Overall a lovely experience.
The only possibly potential issue is the drive up the mountain to the site. While it is 2WD accessible I would highly recommend a 4WD or AWD car. The dirt road is narrow and uneven and it can be a bit steep at times. We were very happy to have borrowed a 4WD car as we were a bit worried that a smaller 2WD car might struggle.
But again, this stay was great! A great place to mostly disconnect and you can even see the stars at night!

Everything was clean and welcoming. We cooked and saved so much money by not eating out.
Cell phone service was spotty, however, this was such a blessing.

This was our first experience at aYurt. Mathilda was very understanding host, accomodating our groups' needs. The place was very beautiful with the communal kitchen, hot tub , small theatre stage, trails and picturesque look outs. Our curious kids had lots of fun.
Detailed directions of how to reach there was very helpful.
Placing the water bottles and Feminine hygiene products in the bathroom, restocking the coffee pods etc showed us how thoughtful she was. Such a great place to spend a weekend.
