Humboldt hideaway is a small intimate SHARED space with residents. The outdoor kitchen, deck with a view, and campfire ring are all connected to the main resident house. There are places of seclusion, but much of it is shared outdoor space. Humboldt Hideaway is a small off-the-grid LGBTQ+ queer land project in Northern California. It is set on 12 acres of hilly terrain in the mixed fir and oak woods of Humboldt County, a half-hour east of Arcata. Back in 2001, when it was established, it was undeveloped with nothing on it. It has since been built up with the scrappy efforts of amateur creative dreamers. It is a home and resource to extended LGBTQ+ communities by being a small-scale rural resource for learning and sharing useful rural living skills and being a destination for visits, artist and activist retreats, and host to small groups and events. Anyone is welcome at Humboldt Hideaway, but please understand that it is an intentional place committed to anti-oppression values. It is important that it remain a safer space for people identifying as queer and/or transgender, as well as a supportive space for women and people of color to freely be. Please make sure you do not anticipate any concerns/problems with this. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS: The property is conveniently located midway between the coast/redwoods and the Trinity River/Trinity Alps backpacking. It is a 45 minute drive to the coast of Trinidad, which has some of the most lovely coves and beaches and Patrick's Point State Park. It is a half hour drive to the coastal Ma-le'l dunes. And it is a half hour drive inland to swimming holes on the Trinity River. OFF-THE-GRID: The place is off-the-grid, no internet, only limited solar power, an on-demand propane water heater, and heated by woodstoves. Structures are a combination of natural building, salvaged, and new materials, with a mix of low-tech alternative technologies- all built with lots of love and help from friends. BOOKING A GROUP: There is potentially both cabin space and camping spots. The property can accommodate a group of up to 10 people. The Fairy Forest is 4 acres of redwood trees one mile from the magical city of Trinidad, CA. People have been camping in our meadow since the 1950's, and I'm happy to carry on the tradition, by opening it up to you. There was a fire on the property in 1901 which left the burnt out hollow stumps which you'll see by the shower. There's one old growth redwood on the property, behind the glampy tent, but everything else in roughly 120 years old. Every year we try to make your glamping experience better and better. Our farm stand is on site with in season food grown in our garden and fresh press cider daily in late summer/fall. Enjoy easy access to the nearby State Park Stephens Grove Trail Loop and the South Fork Eel River is a 3 minute drive down the Avenue of the Giants. Take a short stroll from camp into the charming town of Miranda. Discover a variety of delicious dining options and a cozy coffee shop with breakfast options, gas station with grocery items and Post Office. On-site amenities include 2 private completely remodeled restrooms for the 2025 season, with hot showers and flush toilets. Our campsites are spacious with roughly 30-50 feet between sites. Forest bathe amongst the Redwoods, Tanoaks, and Dogwood Trees, after exploring the near by State Park and river.

Lovely property right above the river! The host is kind and thoughtful. I appreciated the self serve check in as I arrived very late after a long day of driving. There are a variety of sites, and I was lucky to be upgraded to the beautiful Perch! It has a private deck overlooking the river, comfy bed + electricity, access to sweet bathhouse with shower+toilet. My pup and I enjoyed the whole property to ourselves and spent a lot of time by the water. It's clear there is a lot of care for the space. HIGHLY recommend!

2 nights at BIGFOOT FLAT on Willow Creek

Beautiful property just off of 299. During the day you can hear cars, but it’s very quiet at night. No other campers were there during my stay, Shannon let me pick my spot. Site #3 on the end is more private and less rocky for tent camping.

The tent was nice and there was a heater. I liked having the comforts of a real bed (that was actually comfortable) and be in the middle of the redwoods and be still close to nature. I loved that it was so close to Trinidad and the freeway as-well. The shower was hard to get warm but it wasn't so bad.

Weekend Trip to Camp Miranda

The site was lovely - Casey & Bryon maintain a lovely farm beyond the fence of the campground, with ducks and vegetable plots. The camp area is slightly slopes to the river, but very open and with plenty of space to pull in. It was close enough to the little town nearby for us to walk, and also to a 1 mile trailhead of redwoods. The restrooms were clean and the showers quite warm which was very nice for our wintertime stay. 10/10 would book again for this area.

So beautiful, romantic, and equipped! It really has everything you could need while remaining pretty minimalist. The steamy outdoor shower on a cold morning was healing, and the privacy of the toilet was ideal (totally worth it to walk outside the cabin for a moment, and you’re still totally protected from rain and dirt on the couple of steps it takes to reach it.) Can’t wait to come back.

We had a great time camping here! The site was beautiful tucked amongst the redwoods and it felt very protected and private. We had our dog with us and felt comfortable with her off leash since the campsite was so contained. It was really nice to have a bathroom and picnic table too. The short nature trail was cute and we found a few banana slugs! The written directions from the host were great and super easy to follow to find camp. Highly recommend staying on Chris’s land for your next weekend in the redwoods!

This was our second stay and all went very well. Beautiful area. We stayed in the Tiny Home this time, partly I choose this because there were high winds predicted. Both the Tiny Home, the cute camper and their composting outhouse are very nice and all are very clean. There's room for a person and two dogs or two people if one wants the floor, such as a child. Great stay.

Weekend Trip to The Swimming Hole On Red Cap Creek

We ended up being the only campers on an early November day, so Wayne graciously let us choose whichever site we liked. We pitched our tent right by the communal fire pit and picnic tables instead of a designated site. The ground was easy to drive stakes into, and Wayne even offered more substantial stakes in case they were needed. His sweet dog (Cowboy) and horse (Coco) paid some very welcome visits. They're sneaky for treats, so watch your back! ;) A hose is nearby that supplies filtered fresh spring water, and the toilet room is very convenient. The hot showers were down due to some construction, but we enjoyed our stay a lot! We would recommend this place as a nice getaway, or as a stop on your way to the redwoods or Eureka (we did both).

We had a fabulous experience at Wendy and John's. The campsite was perfect under a full moon. We really appreciated the sparkling clean bathroom and shower. The dinner was amazing- a 5 course meal that rivaled any fine dining restaurant we ever experienced! Wendy and John are fantastic hosts in every respect. We enjoyed celebrating the election results together 11/4/25. We look forward to returning again and again.
