Now about this beautiful place -
This property has been in the family since 1922. During a time of no roads just the railroad that passed through, and a river ferry.
At the entrance of the property was the town of Skelly, with a post office, train stop, animal corrals and railroad logging spurs. The lands primary use was ranching and timber back then. The flat that the camp ground is located on is the site of the old Larrabee school house (Georgeson School) which was built after the 1955 flood took out the original school house, located across from the train trussell next to Larabee Creek.
The railroad was closed indefinitely in 1996, which changed the entire landscape for this small community. This area is accessible by a low water bridge in the summer months and offers a spot to slip back in time.
Today the land is a great example of sustainably harvest redwoods, a project that was established by great grandpa and is still in practice today. The timber surrounds the pastures and farm land that now produces hay.
We acquired this land 5 years ago and have spent countless hours restoring the fields, managing the forest and creating a working sustainable environment.
It is a very special place and offers peace and quite to those who enjoy the out doors and camping.

We're in a wooded country neighborhood where lots of folks have dogs, so you might hear some barking and see some neighbors. Very occasionally we see a dog off leash. We ask that you keep your dogs on leash at all times, as we have cats and chickens.
We encourage you to enjoy the forest, but do be aware that there is poison oak. If you don't know what it looks like we can show you.
Arrive anytime after 1pm. Check out is at noon, but you can often stay later if we don't have other campers arriving to your site.

Pitch a tent or park your RV right off the main road to the spectacular Lost Coast of California. Our property is located 5 minutes from Cape Mendocino beach and 4 minute drive to downtown Petrolia, we are surrounded by scenic pastoral views and ancient forest. We have multiple camping options and a wood chip driveway that can accommodate a couple RV's (or vehicle camping). Our land has fields and forest, a seasonal creek, and incredible star gazing. We are right on the Mattole Road, so the RV spots and campsites close to the road with easy access will see cars, but we have 26 acres including plenty of tucked away spots that can be walked to and are far from the road if you are seeking seclusion. We are working on developing campsites, but for now, you can have your choice of where to camp on the property. You can sleep out in an open meadow or in the forest under the Pepperwood trees.
This is a working farm, so there are livestock and everything that comes along with them on the property! Our sheep and two spayed female livestock guardian dogs free range most of the time on the property, but are accostomed to people and usually either keep their distance or stop by to say hi. The dogs do sometimes bark at night if they sense predators.
We sometimes have building and ecological restoration projects on the property as well.
Our property has been farmed and ranched since the late 1860's and has a beautiful old barn. As the most recent stewards of the land, our family is starting a small organic farm on it utilizing regenerative agricultural methods. It is a beautiful place and a work in progress!
For now we can offer a rustic outhouse, fresh spring water, a sink for dishes, a not-so-private shower (feel free to wear your swimsuit if you prefer), and Wi-Fi access to our guests, as well as knowledge of the local area.
Downtown Petrolia has a general store (sells gas but only accepts cash), Sunday Farmer's Market at the Mattole Valley Community Center, a pioneer cemetery to explore, the gorgeous Mattole River for fishing and swimming, and access to the Mattole Beach.
**Note: this is called the Lost Coast for a reason. It is gorgeous and remote, but the roads are winding, steep, and poorly maintained in some areas! Potholes abound. We drive our two wheel drive Prius car out here, so the roads are definitely navigable, just a bit intense.
The closest pharmacy is almost an hour away, so please bring any medications you need.

My aunt and uncle bought the property in 1947 from its first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who immigrated in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. (The grapevine still grows over the back deck.) What can you expect? Quiet, beauty, birdsong, ocean roar, widely spaced campsites (only 5 on the 5 acres set aside for camping). Free firewood, local tips on travel and where to hike or what to visit. Or total solitude. Bring your (most non-cattle-chasing breeds) dogs if you wish (males must be neutered). Starlink internet. Walk to the beach of our wild ocean along a no-shoulder country road. We have no visible neighbors, no ambient light or sound. The air is clean and clear and the water is potable from an artesian spring on the property. No electricity at the sites and no generators allowed. (Charge your electronics at the farmhouse.) We offer homemade soup, cobbler, fresh bread, morning coffee as extras; you can order with the booking. The Victorian village of Ferndale is three miles east, as is a beautifully maintained 110-acre town wilderness with hiking trails called Russ Park. A 150-year-old cemetery slopes down a hillside & is filled with 19th century charm and history. Shops and restaurants welcome visitors. There are several bars/a wine bar/and a historic saloon that's as old boy as it was in 1890. A music venue in a restored 19th century church has amazing acoustics and attracts international talent as a top-notch venue (sessions are filmed for PBS) midway between Portland and San Francisco. So, it's a mix of town and country, village and farm, wilderness and bewilderedness. Safe, safe, safe, meaning: you can leave your belongings in your site and when you come back... they're still there :) One caveat: please arrive before dark. Camp Candy Cap is like a coastal botanical garden set among over 12 acres of pristine forest on the Mendocino coast. You'll be surrounded by wind-twisted mossy pines, wild berry bushes and ferns, with every footstep silent in the soft duff. The only sound comes from the nearby ocean waves. This is the peaceful, quiet and natural sanctuary you've been dreaming about.
Four campsites spread across all that land, which makes it perfect for groups and quiet enough for two.

The communal fire pit sits in the middle of Candy Cap Meadow, ringed with stumps and open to the night sky, and it's where everybody ends up after dark to share a drink and swap stories. The dining area is nearby, tarped and filled with picnic tables and a long work space.
THE SAUNA
A wood-fired sauna built of reclaimed redwood, smelling sweet like bourbon. Come in cold off the headlands, stoke up the stove, and let the heat work into your bones while the fog moves through the pines outside. There's a hot shower and a composting toilet in the same bathhouse.
THE COAST
The water is about a five minute walk. From there the old Haul Road runs flat and paved along the bluffs for miles in both directions, so you can go as far as you feel like: tide pools and harbor seals at Laguna Point about fifteen minutes up, Glass Beach a couple miles south.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND EDUCATION
Local folks who know this coast teach here through the season. Tide pooling, coastal foraging, rolling your own sushi out on the rocks with what you just picked up, mushroom forays, and more. Nobody expects you to show up knowing anything, and classes book separately from your site.
Winter is just as good as summer, maybe even better! The rains bring the mushrooms up, the candy caps really do smell like maple syrup, and the lowest tides of the year come in winter and spring. The winter weather here is mild too, so it might just be warmer than you expect!
GOOD TO KNOW
-Rigs up to 25 feet, so vans and small campers fit. No trailers and no big rigs, so it stays quiet, and no generators, TVs or stereos.
-No hookups, water or electric.
-Bring your own drinking water, a gallon per person per day. Water onsite is non-drinkable.
-No pets, service animals excepted.
-Campfires happen in the communal pit. We ask that you pay $8 a night for firewood, and we'll keep you supplied with all you need.
-This is an inclusive property. We welcome people of every race, gender, age, background, and belief.
-Arrival instructions come after you book.
-Pack it in, pack it out. Trash service is not provided.
-A separate use agreement is required to be signed upon booking

We are a place for people experimenting with the new old ways to live with low impact and conservation of our precious resources. We offer affordable accommodations, organic gardening, and education on plants and living simply.
We welcome your interest in veganic garden and diet, orchards, and forest trails. Our organic vegetables and fruit may be available if you wish to bring some of our farm to your table.
We can offer you a quiet and peaceful place without social pressures if you wish to "decompress" from city life, jobs or any stressful times. Or come to the communal fire near the bathhouse for sharing some time with family and the few other campers that may be there. Bringing your own wood is welcome.
The coastal bike and hike trails are many. From South of Ft Bragg to the Sand Dunes near Ward Ave. you can travel over 7 miles one way and go down to quiet little beach coves along the way.
Meadow Farm is a nonprofit 501c3 with goals of coastal food security, disaster preparation and sheltering, carbon sequestering and forest restoration. We offer native plant tours on or off site with advance notice.
We like our dog companions! Two McNab collies, Moxie and Shama live here and may bark at first...still very friendly and social with people and other dogs.. There are several dog friendly off-leash areas such as, Noyo North Harbor Beach, Seaside Beach and dog parks in both Ft Bragg and Mendocino. Our farm is dog friendly tho we wish pets to be kept close, must be neutered and friendly to other dogs and people. Please be sure to bury or bag the waste.
Speaking of waste, Meadow Farm strives to reduce waste by avoiding plastic as much as possible, recycling what we can and composting our veggie scraps.
Please bring your own waste receptacles and take them along when you go. We take ours to the Caspar Transfer Station which is open Saturday through Wednesday... the location and hours can be found online.
Our water is from a deep well and we periodically test it for bacteria. It is cold and delicious. Our irrigation pipes that have spigots and hoses at each camp are safe for drinking, cooking and cleaning
Our solar pump moves water into storage tanks that provide all the water to the farm. It is very important that the water valves on your camp spigot is turned off (gently please) to avoid losing 2500 gallons of water in a short time.
If you see a leak or break in a line please contact us immediately. There are also water shut offs for the camps on the west side of the Farm House if you are unable to reach us right away..
When doing dishes we request that you use the strainer to catch food particles from the dish water and toss them in your trash or compost bucket. If you have vegetable waste let us know and we can pick them up for adding to the worm bins or composting piles. We make worm "tea" fertilizer and rich soil from these offerings. No animal products or oil please... a few egg shells are okay.
We do have the usual wildlife though we haven't had problems with them. Ravens will raid your camp if food or bags are left out while you are away.
From dusk to dawn keep children and pets close. We coexist well here with the critters...and glad to have them.

We had an amazing time! The ocean was out front yard and the host my kids named “Big Dawg” was phenomenal, very helpful and attentive to all the campers there 💛 The man doesn’t miss a beat!!!!! Rather it’s showing up for you, or keeping the camp safe and quiet after hours. He even ran a skunk off for us 😂🙏Definitely will be returning!!! 10/10

Had a great two-night stay at Shelter Cove RV Campground. It’s challenging to get to because of the steep grades and switchbacks, but once we were on site everything was great! The Host came out to meet us and loaned us a lighter to light the firewood we had requested. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and genuinely seemed to want to help make our stay comfortable. Bathrooms were clean, water pressure and hot water were good. Power, water and sewer worked as advertised and Wi-Fi was good, which was great as I had no cell service to speak of. Overall, a really enjoyable experience, despite the somewhat harrowing drive in (in a rented camper van!)

This is the best hidden gem. This retreat is so big you can spend couple of days exploring. The bathroom is evacuate. The hot shower is amazing. If you need to a place to mentally reset and reconnect with nature, this is the spot. We came with our kids and spent a night there before heading up to the redwoods. Its a great break if you dont want do one long drive.

The only suggestion I would make is to make the direction and space number to the assigned space more clearly. But I think most places are like this. We arrived late so it took a little bit to look around for the assigned space to park.

This is a truly beautiful place, offering a great location to explore the coast or the redwood forests to the north. The bathroom and shower facilities are really excellent, it is near 101 (with no traffic noise), and the people who care for the land are very helpful.
