Camp Candy Cap is like a coastal botanical garden set among over 12 acres of pristine forest on the Mendocino coast. You'll be surrounded by wind-twisted mossy pines, wild berry bushes and ferns, with every footstep silent in the soft duff. The only sound comes from the nearby ocean waves. This is the peaceful, quiet and natural sanctuary you've been dreaming about. The dining area is nearby, tarped and filled with picnic tables and a long work space. THE SAUNA A wood-fired sauna built of reclaimed redwood, smelling sweet like bourbon. Come in cold off the headlands, stoke up the stove, and let the heat work into your bones while the fog moves through the pines outside. There's a hot shower and a composting toilet in the same bathhouse. THE COAST The water is about a five minute walk. From there the old Haul Road runs flat and paved along the bluffs for miles in both directions, so you can go as far as you feel like: tide pools and harbor seals at Laguna Point about fifteen minutes up, Glass Beach a couple miles south. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AND EDUCATION Local folks who know this coast teach here through the season. Tide pooling, coastal foraging, rolling your own sushi out on the rocks with what you just picked up, mushroom forays, and more. Nobody expects you to show up knowing anything, and classes book separately from your site. Winter is just as good as summer, maybe even better! The rains bring the mushrooms up, the candy caps really do smell like maple syrup, and the lowest tides of the year come in winter and spring. The winter weather here is mild too, so it might just be warmer than you expect! GOOD TO KNOW -Rigs up to 25 feet, so vans and small campers fit. No trailers and no big rigs, so it stays quiet, and no generators, TVs or stereos. -No hookups, water or electric. -Bring your own drinking water, a gallon per person per day. Water onsite is non-drinkable. -No pets, service animals excepted. -Campfires happen in the communal pit. We ask that you pay $8 a night for firewood, and we'll keep you supplied with all you need. -This is an inclusive property. We welcome people of every race, gender, age, background, and belief. -Arrival instructions come after you book. -Pack it in, pack it out. The location of candy cap is simply amazing! You are just 5 minutes from the beautiful wild coast line. The shower and fired sauna are absolutely wonderful. There are two bikes to use and wonderful bike path's right along the coast! Wish I could have stayed longer!

Friendly and nature- knowledgeable host, lovely large sized camping spots walking distance to the beach. Hot shower, compostable toilet and sink, hammocks and communal fire pit was lovely. There is also a sauna there as well. Our family of four enjoyed our stay.

Would highly recommend this site to all. Plenty of room to spread out, and a beautiful property. Very close access to the beach and an easy bike ride into town. Richard was a great host, and his property is well maintained and accessible. Hope to be back!

Amazing place! Richard The host goes above and beyond to show you the area and will teach you about local foods that grow wild at the campground. Took me down to the ocean and we foraged for fresh seaweed. Wait till you see the amazing sauna he built. Enjoy

Amazing Getaway - Camp Candy Cap

Richard has created an amazing campground in a beautiful location. I booked Yellowfoot Nook for my wife’s birthday, and we had a fantastic stay. The amenities were a huge plus: a clean composting toilet (plus a spotless portable toilet), a hot shower, sauna, and a communal kitchen with a sink for washing dishes. We also loved picking fresh wild huckleberries on the property, which my wife turned into delicious pancakes. Even though our site was between the other campsites, it still felt private and cozy. The large communal fire pit was a nice place to relax in the evenings. The campground is just minutes from Fort Bragg but feels completely secluded once you turn off the main road. Also about 5 mins away from a Safeway! Richard’s directions were clear, and his recommendation to try Noyo Fish Company’s fish and chips and fish tacos did not disappoint. A short walk also leads to stunning coastal bluffs with incredible ocean views. We chatted with Richard and he’s got big plans for the site! We’re excited to see what he’s got in store for the place. We highly recommend Camp Candy Cap to anyone looking to enjoy Fort Bragg while escaping the crowds.

It's clear this property is a work of love for Richard. The bathrooms, shower, sauna, and kitchen prep area were kept in great condition. The grounds weren't crowded and since there was only 1-2 other groups there we felt safe to let the kids roam and explore the common areas on their own.

It was great. It had nice hot showers and a sauna to use. The toilet situation was a little unique but it wasn't bad at all. They had a compost toilet which took some work to use but overall had all facilities needed. They also had a communal kitchen for you to cook as well as a campfire which was great for chilling and stargazing. Super chilly during the night so if you book bring layers and something to keep warm during the night.

This was a great spot to camp, and especially awesome for a large group. I reserved the small site for me and my 1 friend and Richard placed us in the large site as an upgrade which was beautiful and pretty secluded. The kitchen area, sinks, clean bathrooms, lights, and well stocked fire pit were huge pluses to our stay. The location also could not be beat, being an easy 10 minute walk to a beautiful beach cliff side emerging from a pine forest. However, the sauna was more of a warming hut, and there is no available dumpster for trash, which was a bit of a drawback consiering the cost of the total site. Yet, again if you are with a large group, this is the spot!

My wife and I really enjoyed our two nights at Camp Candy Cap. Our host, Richsrd is a mushroom fan whose favorite is Candy Cap, which grows on the grounds. Richard is dedicated to serving his guests who get treated to a fire circle, clean bath house and sauna, and outdoor kitchen. His advice about dining and things to do was spot on (eg, dinner and a hot tub.) Each site has plenty of space so it’s quiet. It’s a short walk to the headland overlooking the Pacific. Since and it’s near a cell tower so device can get on line.

Such a beautiful and peaceful property! My husband and I loved spending several nights here. Excellent location just minutes from town, but felt completely secluded in the lush forest. The drive in is majestic! We were greeted by friendly deer in the morning and enjoyed riding our bikes down the path to watch the sun set over the ocean at night. Our host Richard was very kind and easy to communicate with. The bathhouse is clean & well equipped - we especially loved warming up in the large cedar sauna! We hope to come back again.

A magical spot!

We really lucked out when we stumbled upon Camp Candy Cap. Everything one would want is already there and Richards vision for the future of the camp has us excited for what's to come. Fort Bragg can be blustery and cold and this trip was quite windy. Luckily the campsites are protected from the wind by gorgeous coastal trees. The cold was readily dealt with by the wood burning sauna, warm showers, and cozy communal fire pit. Beach access was a short walk down a beautiful and well maintained path. The camp bikes made for a quick ride to the coastal cliffs and beach that we had to ourselves. The cooking area was clean and the sink and running water for washing dishes was a great amenety. The restrooms were clean and stocked. We had the joy of exploring the grounds with Richard and his enthusiasm for learning about the surrounding nature was contagious. The kids had plenty of safe places to explore and had a blast. We will definitely be going back!

The location of Camp Candy is very convenient for access to the Ocean, Tide Pools and Beaches. Richard was very helpful with local tips on where to go and what to do. We stayed in Lobster camp which was open and sunny and had great protection from the wind. We had bikes which made for easy travel to the beach and along the bike trail. I would highly recommend this camp!

Richard has built an amazing camp! It is spacious, private, and beautiful. His craftsmanship is unmatched with a beautiful bathroom, shower (perfectly hot), and sauna. The communal spaces are great as well, with hammocks, kitchen, and fire pit. Best hip camp I’ve stayed at by far. I highly recommend. Plus a short walk down to the beach and bike path. A perfect spot!

We had a wonderful time camping at Camp Candycap. Richard is a conscientious host and his property is stunningly beautiful. We fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves and woke to grazing deer and bunnies.the property is a short bike ride to Glass Beach and into town and is well appointed with a sauna, communal kitchen and hot shower. We will definitely be back!

We had heard that this area was a hidden gem in Northern California, and we weren’t disappointed. We really needed a couple of weeks to take everything in, but the biggest, most wonderful surprise was the friendliness and hospitality we encountered EVERYWHERE, starting with our wonderful host, Richard. His love of this place is contagious. Camp Candy Cap is really amazing. The perfect blend between a vehicle campground a hike-in primitive site. The property is well off the beaten path, which is a great thing. Just have confidence that you’re in the right place if you’re arriving by night. It was just my wife and I this trip, to celebrate her birthday, but we have every intention of planning a larger family gathering here. It is absolutely perfect for that. The quiet! That sky! The amenities include a great community kitchen with loads of space, tables, and running sinks (not quite for drinking though). Super hot showers and the sauna is a real treat after the temperature drops. There is currently one restroom located near the communal area, so you might want to bring along a portable one for your group if you decide to stay in one of the meadow camps. Unfortunately (but also understandably), there is only one main fire pit for all to use. Not a problem for us as we decided to camp right next door. Richard gave us so many great recommendations. Bring bikes if you can (or borrow some from Richard’s supply) and take the haul road in any direction. Spectacular!
