The Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground began as a vacant wooded lot in 1968. The land was purchased by Charles and Jeanne Feeney from a retired doctor living in Vineyard Haven. Charles “Chuck” Feeney was an aerospace engineer at the time and was always taking his kids camping. His dream was to have a place for the family to camp and call their own. So together with his wife and five children he converted a bus into a camper and carved out a site amongst the wild blueberry bushes and scrub oak trees. Our family fell in love with the island. We discovered all the island has to offer and found it irresistible. We were the tourists of yesteryear and what attracted our family back then still exists today: beautiful beaches, fabulous fishing, quaint villages, and amazing sunsets. From the rolling hills of Aquinnah to the dunes of Katama, there is no place on earth like it. Martha’s Vineyard When Chuck found out his job was relocating him to California, he made the bold move to make his family campsite and land available to you. With a lot of hard work and great family pride, the construction of Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground began. During the first few summers of construction, we lived in the converted bus and tents. Slowly the sites and the roads were carved out. Summer vacations meant clearing land and pouring cement. The campground was officially opened in the spring of 1972 and has been a family-run operation ever since. Today the campground is managed by a third generation of The Feeney Family. The goal has always been to provide a quality camping experience for families who wish to visit this wonderful island. When I pulled up there were agricultural tours going on but everyone cleared out before sunset and I was able to set up a nice secluded area for my fire, great views over the cranberry bog and located closely to convenience stores

Very cute, little lake side cabin, w a nice yard space, hammock, boat access, and fire-pit. Kind and responsive management was very easy to engage w. But, perhaps best of all, was the private sandy beach just steps from the front patio. There is a set of well built outdoor stairs to get down to the cabin, that could present a challenge of accessibility for some individuals. But, if you can do a few stairs, it’s well worth the effort. Great spot to unwind and enjoy the cape from.

Loved this site. Super cute and spacious, also secluded though in Kathleen’s backyard. They did a nice job with the space here. I loved that they provided chairs, hammocks, fire pit, etc. as I was just stopping in and out and didn’t pack a ton of real campy stuff. Super helpful that they allow dogs as I was coming with my puppy for a dog show. You can hear some loud planes, but they never woke me up so I imagine they must not operate that airport at night. 35 minutes to where my show was in the Cape (Falmouth) and super easy to get to!

Cute lil cabin and cozy hot tub. I had a nice stay despite the rainy day. Easy drive to beaches. The hosts were very accommodating and responsive to messages during my stay.

Weekend Trip to Waterfront cabin 10minutes Cape Cod

We had a wonderful stay at the cabin. Such a peaceful spot on the lake to get away. We enjoyed using the kayaks and having evening campfires in the fire pit. Charles was super responsive with questions. I would highly recommend!

The site was absolutely beautiful. It was cozy and in more of a private area. By far, our favorite location we have stayed at. The lights and hammocks made for a very relaxing stay.

About

More than 2,000 acres of lush woodlands and oak forests dotted with “kettle ponds” await at Nickerson State Park—a welcome change of scenery amid Cape Cod’s sand dunes and salt marshes. Hit the trails to hike and bike, then head down to the water to fish for trout, cool off with a swim, or rent a kayak. To the north end, the 22-mile, multi-use Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through the park, and a sandy beach tempts sunseekers to the coast. Nickerson State Campground has plenty of space, with tent and RV sites, as well as yurts, but no electric hookups.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve 418 campsites, including six yurts, via the Reserve America website.
Online reservations open four months in advance, and campsites must be booked at least one day in advance.
Campsites can book up fast, especially for summer and holiday weekends, so book as soon as possible, especially if you have a particular site in mind.

When to go

Camping season in Nickerson State Park runs from mid-April through mid-October only. This is by far the most popular time to visit, and coincides with whale-watching season along the coast. Winter visitors can still enjoy outdoor activities, with the inland trails providing shelter from the chilly coastal winds, and the ponds are stocked with trout year-round.

Know before you go

Nickerson State Park is in Brewster on Cape Cod, 90 miles southeast of Boston or about a 90-minute drive away. The main entrance is located off Route 6A.
Daily parking fees are charged from Memorial Day weekend through November. Campsite booking fees also apply.
Facilities at Nickerson State Park include a nature center, a park store, picnic areas, boat ramps, restrooms, a dump station, and a playground.
You can bring your own boats up to 10 horsepower to the park; boat and watercraft rentals are also available throughout the summer season.
There are accessible campsites, restrooms, and beaches at Nickerson State Park. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is also accessible.
